Monday, a buddy showed up out of the blue from pennsylvania (I'm in Texas) we found this at a hole in the wall store around the corner from my house. It's spectacular! A surprise visit from one of my favorite people in the world and a bottle of distillers edition... Best day I've had in years. Thanks Steven!
Lagavulin: Fresh veggie peat Laphroaig: Burning rubber car fire peat Ardbeg: Campfire ashtray peat Kilchoman: Leather saddle and barnyard hay peat Ledaig: Old books and leather peat Bowmore: Sad oatmeal juice
I snagged a bottle of this back in May as a treat for my birthday. Hands down the finest scotch I've ever had! I've always loved the 16, and enjoy Ardbeg's offerings, but this was just a revelation. New favorite.
Christmas is coming, would love to see a video of YOUR top 10 Christmas sippers over on the Whiskey Tribe channel... and then poll the community for 10 more. Thanks for the constant updates in the vault here, too!
Bought a bottle of this to celebrate a raise a while ago and I also liked it more than the classic 16. Easily one of my favorite whiskies I've ever had.
Eden: After this video, I bought Lagavulin Distillers for my first scotch and love it. I taste smokey apricots with several other tastes at times. Thanks to Daniel and Rex.
I have to thank you Magnificent Bastards for helping me explore the world of whiskey more and more. I am more of a bourbon guy myself with a modest collection of around 15 bottles or so. Recently the Mrs. has poured me a small pour of a bourbon at random to see if I can guess the bottle. Just a few years ago I could barely get passed the alcohol taste to find any tasting notes of substance, but now with regularity I can pick out many of my standard pours by nose alone.
i guess im randomly asking but does anyone know a method to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb forgot my password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
@Manuel Justice Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site thru google and im in the hacking process now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
After being a fan of Lagavulin 16 for about a decade a few years ago I discovered Distiller's edition and that's definitely my new consistent favorite.
The Distiller's Edition is my favorite Scotch. I try to always keep a bottle of 16 and a bottle of 16 DE on hand. I love giving guests a glass sample of each and watching their reaction when they taste the difference. So far, everyone prefers the Distiller's Edition.
An absolutely amazing dram, I've been lucky enough to try the Lagavulin distillers edition, 1987 PX double matured. Words cant describe how nice it is. Lagavulin is probably the best in the distillers edition series.
I would love to taste all of the Lags but unfortunately the only bottle that my neighborhood package store carries is the 8 year. Still going to buy it one day but I wish I could get a hold of some 16, 12 and distiller’s edition. Or the Nick Offerman 11 year
I just picked up a bottle of this and WOW, I think I like it more than the 16. It’s similar but seems just a smidge more round and sweet to me. So good!
@JudgeNukem I hope they’re not running low! I see more distillers edition’s around more than the regular 16 so I think we’re ok for now 🤞🏼 but you should definitely go ahead and try it, you’ll be pleasantly surprised
Lagavulin is what I feel I enjoy about peated whiskey. While I do enjoy a dram of Ardbeg or Laphroaig once in awhile, this type of whiskey is much more approachable and easier to share with others who might enjoy a taste of peat.
Call me crazy but I seriously get dark roasted, lightly sweetened, creamy peanut butter from this. I think it's objectively better than the original 16 year purely for what the PX casks do to the peat and smoke, but when I want Lagavulin I usually just want the original 16 year.
Perhaps a giant wooden sign hung in the vault where they can see it, after all its segment four, remember shot in one day so, total drinks on camera mon - weds is before start of this, so.....
In terms of availability, every MAJOR liquor store chain I’ve been to carries this, and every other one can easily get it. However... where Lagavulin 16 can be had for $55-65, Distillers Edition is usually around $105-130. I think it’s worth the price jump, but I’m not sure everyone will.
I detect distinct differences in Daniel's behavior, first he seems happier than a pig in slop, rolling in the mud, second he scuttles about the vault like a meth'd up Hobbit searching for his precious all the while suddenly able to produce a comparison as easily as Dumbledore as Rex mugs it up having successfully mooched his way back. Then watching Rex frantically try to keep the segment on a coherent arc with places for elegant cuts is of course Gold! Transitions and segways sometimes are in desperate need of Basil Exposition such as the transition of Mary Sue Rex to Rex American Samuri, but I digress. The size of the vault making it difficult for Rex to exploit Daniel's personal safe space issues, perhaps a set piece behind Daniel so it would restrict his tendency to break into interpretive hobbit folk dance, but taste is subjective. That is not to say the segment was in way anything, but great, always enjoy learning something and laughing as I do, life is too short, the world is hard and mean, so never pass on a chance to laugh and remember we got each other you bastards. Balls busted! It is the way! I have spoken!
Flagrant ommission! Admittedly Lagavulin 16 is the only Islay Scotch I have ever tasted, but to leave out the primary tasting note of iodine and bandaid seems to be bordering on malpractice. When I first tried it, I tasted the wonderful smoke, which I enjoyed, followed by the lingering iodine and rubber that I couldn't scrub out of my mouth for the next few hours. Is this something that just goes away after you get accustomed to peaty whiskys? I loved the smoke but hated the iodine and rubber. Is there a smokey whiskey that doesn't have these things? If not, I will be content with my bourbon and enjoy watching you guys enjoy the peaty spirits from across the pond.
Really enjoy the Lagavulin distillers edition, the caol ila distillers is just as delicious but a bit more reasonably priced. The Cragganmore distillers is also excellent and super easy to drink.
Per Ralphy's instructions, I blended 5/6th Clynelish and 1/6th Lagavulin Distillers edition to create a Brora replica. No idea if it is successful (since I don't have access to Brora) but it is DAMN delicious!!!
Have you guys already done an episode regarding the whiskeys you want to put up on the “category representation” wall there in the back?? Or did I miss it🤔 this episode got me thinking about it and how lagavulin would be a great one for Islay scotch!!
I dont remember the regular Lagavulin 16 being that light in color (with its added e150).. could that have been the 8/12CS? May just be the lighting. Cheers!
I am on the same page with y'all. The DE is the superior whisky. However, I disagree about the finish. For me, the sweet sherry and peat are what stays on my palate. A very luxurious dram indeed.
I've got a pour of both Lag 16 and Lag Distiller's Edition in front of me.....they are THE EXACT SAME COLOR. I'm so confused why your colors are so different.
I also really like the Michter's American. The only problem I have is finding it (in PA in the USA). Shops are more miss than hit, and bars, ever one's with a good selection, are usually a miss as well. Everyone has the rye, and some have the bourbon. The whiskey is annoyingly hard to find. Need to get more into the Lagavulin eventually.
This laga DE and the Talisker DE are both excellent drams, but not sure they're worth the large price hike over the standard offerings. (At least $30 extra in Ontario)
Try the Laphroaig PX Cask - also finished off in Pedro Ximenez casks. It’s a duty free only whisky but also tastes fantastic. Could do a comparison alongside this new Lagavulin
🥃 I think somebody was sipping on enhanced egg nog before recording this episode. I also get a lemon-lime character at the core of Lagavulin, sometimes it reminds me of margarita mix without the tequila. Other times it is like key lime pie.
truly sorry to say, not sure if sth went wrong there, but the Michters American, to me, has been a comparatively expensive batch of bottom shelf, spirit tasting liquor ...now waiting to evaporate or be diluted in ginger ale
So I am introducing my wife to whiskey. We finally found a bourbon she likes, Paddleford Creek. Can you do a review on it and suggest some similar but ore complex bourbons to introduce her to?
This my favorite whisky in my collection. I had to edit because this is the first time I have the same batch and 4/507 on my bottle as what was reviewed. So I can legitimately compare your tasting notes to what I get. This will let me know just how full of crap you guys really are or maybe how full of crap I am.
@@benjaminsitaud9743 I got spearmint, light sweet honey, black pepper, and briny peat more like Talisker rather than smokey peat like Ardbeg or Laphroaig. I can also tell with the finish that it was matured in sherry casks. Earlier this year I was in a honey store and tried about 10 different honeys. This whisky reminded me of the lighter tasting honey compared to clover honey I find around here. The first time I tried Lagavulin 16 I loved it. Once I got past the peat there was so much complexity. The Distillers Edition has all the complexity, plus sweet notes from the sherry cask.
To me it looks like Daniel poured the 8 year Lagavulin due to the light colour in the glas. Here in germany the 16 is coloured like hell and glowing red like the distillers edition and I doubt that it is different in the US of A.
Dude, guys, dude, guys;Dude. I already have a problem with buying one bottle and not finishing it within 3 days. I want to make my own bar myself but I need to not be allowed to touch it more than twice a week. Any advice? Please. Peace peace -n- Chicken grease.

Ever had Octomore?
With Bowmore, I get a lot of rosemary / similar herb notes, especially in the 1968 and 1990s single barrel expressions
A lot more complicated than that but yeah I appreciate that you're trying to be funny
I once worked with a Scot. He swore by Bowmore 12, his favourite whisky.
yeah I dislike Bowmore
Have you guys tried to contact Nick Offerman to come down for a special tasting session
I snagged a bottle of this back in May as a treat for my birthday. Hands down the finest scotch I've ever had! I've always loved the 16, and enjoy Ardbeg's offerings, but this was just a revelation. New favorite.
when i saw lagavulin in title i was sure daniel is going to talk about mint

Glenfiddich snow Phoenix.😘😘😘😘
If lagavulin made a Rex edition, it would be “immatured”

@Manuel Justice it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy!

@Maximo Mario glad I could help :)
I love this Whiskey... its basically everything that's good about the 16 with peat notes turned up!
Yes!
After being a fan of Lagavulin 16 for about a decade a few years ago I discovered Distiller's edition and that's definitely my new consistent favorite.
I just got this as a Christmas gift. And "OH BOY" do I like it!!

Same here
Hi guys from north Italy! big fan of yours, I love how you make whisky aproachable to everybody, thanks!! I love whiskys from Islay!
Produced by Rexy Lou Who, who was no more than two.
Rexy Lou Who's new do made my heart grow 3 times its size that day

The distillers edition is actually cheaper at my store than the 16. Im gonna need to get it!
I watched this while drinking Lagavulin 16. This was a great episode gentlemen

I got a bottle of this at Lagavulin this summer when I was in Islay. I like it better than the straight 16 too.
You guys have quite the collection
Love how the light shines on his little hobbit head
Did anyone notice how Rex's hair seamlessly changed while Daniel was explaining the core of Lagavulin? You thought nobody would notice, but I did! :-)
When did we switch from stealing “a” lovers heart, to stealing “your” lovers heart?
I noticed that too.... so on the "Pinhook Rye Whiskey Review" on 12-9...... was "A" lovers
Maybe they’re just trying to promote monogamy
Perhaps a giant wooden sign hung in the vault where they can see it, after all its segment four, remember shot in one day so, total drinks on camera mon - weds is before start of this, so.....
I like it!
I always felt the "steal-a" transition was vocally awkward.
But "steal-your" just rolls off the tongue. Nice.
@@bwhite-ee I find it the opposite, and you can't steal your own anything, it's yours! If someone's already your lover, you have their heart!

where the hell do you live?? lagavulin 16 is $100 around here
Lag 16 is $105 and Lag DE is $95 where I live.
I really enjoy the Michter's Rye. Of the many ryes I have, the Michter's stands above the rest for being a classic and delicious rye.
I just bought my first bottle of lagavulin 16 today. I’ve never tasted Smokey whiskey. Let the fun ride begin!
This was the first Lagavulin I bought! It's very good stuff
Just got this today can’t wait to open it the 16 is my all time favorite so maybe it’s gets beat by this!!!
Both classics, I must agree the double matured is even better!
Very artistic bar you boys have there. How many bottles???

I have tried the 2017, 2018 and 2019. IMHO the 2017 is the best one.
Good to hear, just picked up a bottle of the 2017 Distiller's Edition from The Whisky Exchange
Just bought a bottle. Thanks guys. Same batch number to.
love this one as well as the Talisker DE both great drams.
Oh hey, it's Moochy Lou Who from the Grinch!

just ordered this yesterday!

Perfume. When you are trying a lot of different perfumes, shop assistants give you some coffee beans to smell to "reset" you nose.

Pallet: cigar smoke fruit savory bbq brine
Waiting on a special time to get this bottle(maybe thanagiving or xmas) but its hard when its $10 less than the normal 16 to wait on it lol
I think the guys are avoiding naming the quintessential Islay, for fear of the war that would follow between the Ardbeg/Lagavulin/Laphroaig folks!
I always got peat, iodine, smoke, vanilla, and a ever so slight date.
I almost bought this for Christmas. but in the end I've got the Flaming Heart.
