    I mentioned to a coworker that I was about to start reading “Heart of Darkness” and he asked me if I knew about Achebe’s essay. I read “Things Fall Apart” in school more than 30 years ago and, other than the fact that I liked it, remember very little about that book. So, now having finished “Heart of Darkness”, I appreciate this short lecture and background on the essay before I go read it.

    Except that a genuinely critical reading of the book will show just how absurd the notion of Europeans as being any less capable of what is described as “savagery” than the native peoples described in the book. That was the whole point of the novella, was to clearly outline and dismantle this idea of the nobility behind European colonialism. A textual and contextual reading of this text will both reflect this.

      I think Achebe is aware that Conrad was critical of what was happening in Congo. Achebe considers him a racist on several counts. But there has never been any doubt about the violence savagery of the European colonizers, even more so if we look at the early colonization of the Americas by the Spanish and Portuguese. So, I guess we basically agree on that:)

    Thank u for your explanation sir, i just have one question, you said that without Achebe's intervention no one would teach Conrad's Heart of Darkness with critical lenses, so u mean that Achiebe was the first one to critic Conrad in terms of racism against Africa ?

    • @masoodraja
      @masoodraja  Рік тому +2

      Thank you. I think I said that no one teaches Conrad without mentioning the Achebe critique, at least no one well informed. My point was that Achebe made this critique central to the study of the novel.

    Sir can we consider Conrad's ' novel representation of Africa ' as an instance of the narrative impulse?

    • @masoodraja
      @masoodraja  4 роки тому

      I am not deeply familiar to the theory, but you could consider Marlow’s impulse to tell a tale as a sort of narrative impulse.
