- Reading Orientalism: Introduction (Part 1)| Edward Said | Postcolonialism
This is first in my series of videos on Edward Said's 'Orientalism." Said's "Orientalism," is one of the most significant books in postcolonial, literary and other fields of humanistic and social sciences studies. If you have ever wondered "What is orientalism" or how does Edward Said employ and explain orientalism as a concept then this series on actually reading Orientalism can be of much use to you.
The page numbers that I refer to are from the 1994 Vintage Books edition. I strongly recommend that you should read the book along with these video conversations:
In so many ways Edward Said can be considered the founder of postcolonialism and he certainly has had a huge influence on postcolonial theory and postcolonial studies.

Sir, i am an undergraduate student. Previously, i was trying to read the book by my own but it needed some explanation and discussion to make it more understandable. After seeing this firsr part on the introduction i realized that this is what was missing and what i was looking for. Thank you so much for starting such a remarkable intellectual programme. I have set a separate time for doing this with you. May Allah bless you.
Thank you so much. I am so glad this is helpful to you. It might take some time but I hope to go over the whole book.
The travel guide example is absolutely genius! Thank you so much for this format of teaching and for your brilliance.
Thank you so much.
This is so far the best lecture series I've ever seen on Postcolonialism. I didn't even notice 25 minutes go by. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much fro your kind words!! Please follow the whole series and let me know if you have any questions.
Sir, your lectures helped me a lot in understanding Said's Orientalism. Please give more lectures on the remaining parts of Orientalism.
Thank you. This is a long term project and I will keep posting more as time permits.
I was struggling reading and understanding the book. This video is simply amazing and the generalization of the sentences are very helpful. Thank you so much for discussing this book.
Thank you. I will get back to recording more on it after I have finished my series on Pedagogy of the Oppressed
Sir, the amount of gratitude I have for this explanation is immeasurable. I am a BA English third year student and I've to present on this topic tomorrow. I was desperate for a comprehensible explanation and you delivered everything I required and even more. Thankyou so much 🌹.
You are welcome.
Nicely done. Very informative. I like this approach in which one can follow along with a reading of portions of a text, followed by a clarifying discussion. Much appreciated.
Thank you.
Hello, thank you so much for starting with this endeavor. This is really useful and I am excited to revisit the text once again with your inputs. Best wishes and regards
Thank you for your interest. Yes, please also add your suggestions and comments. This is going to be a long project but I am excited about it, as it is totally worth the effort.
Brilliant initiative Dr Raja. This is more a reality today than it was at the time Edward Said wrote the book. RIP Edward Said.
Thank you.
Thank you for opening up your journey to the rest of us.
You are welcome.
Thank you for all your work Dr. Masood! This entire series has been very helpful to my understanding of this very important piece of writing
You are welcome. I will be adding the next lecture soon.

Thank you for starting this project.
You are welcome. Please share and pass it on to others.
As far as it is the only reading of Orientalism, and indeed a compelling one. Thanks for making it and sheding light on a masterpiece that everyone should have a grasp in order to realize the relation between the East and West. Great Job!!

Thank you for reading this for us and taking the time to explaining every part. Greetings from Argentina where we also have orientalism trough colonialism and post colonial mentality...
Thank you so much and welcome.
I read the part I yesterday and I didn't understand a single thing, but your video helped me alot. Thank you sir and keep making vids on it please🙏
Thank you. Glad to hear this.
i have just started reading ORIENTALISM; but it seemed like a complicated book to grasp. after listening to your videos, I am able to understand the nuances of the book.
but I'm saddened to see that you have not recorded lectures about the whole book.
but these few videos have helped me a lot.
and I'm a Pakistani student, doing LLB from university of punjab lahore.
Thank you. I will continue when I have some more time to read.
Absolutely love your videos. I have to read this book for my Postcolonial Novels course and was finding it difficult to read and understand the nuances on my own. Going to follow this series. Thank you for providing us with this knowledge.
Thank you. You are welcome.
Thank you so much for doing this Sir! Respect from IN!
You are welcome.
Thank you, Dr. Raja.✊
You're most welcome
This is the most valuable lecture on the subject I have come across, am interested in Islamophobia research in Nigeria, a British colonized country in West Africa, Said's Orientalism & The clash of civilization are the theories to guide my project. I equally want explore Faucalt theory exhaustively and urge if you can recommend any of your lecture on the area.
Thank you. I have not recorded anything on Foucault. When I do, you will see it on the channel.
I am doing the same. Can I have your email so we can contact each other
Thank you. My Daniel is listed on the About page of the channel.
@@masoodraja I have a question please. Can we explore the views of Westerns on Islam using orientalist lens?
Yes, absolutely. Please read the part where Said discusses Masugnon’s work on Mansur Hallaj. That part of the book is about Orientalist readings of Muslim figures and texts. You can also read his book Covering Islam for the same issues in the modern world.
I have this book handy... I’ll use it when I want to explore deeper media forums or reading a story ...
Great. Yes, reading the book carefully will be very beneficial.
This is great stuff sir! keep it going please
Thank you.
thanks alot for making these videos, they are very helpful and making it easier for us as students to understand the context of the book ❤️🙏
You are welcome.
I am so happy and excited to find your channel, your videos and your style of approach. I will be checking out each video, one by one, contributing any thoughts I have and I am now going to share the introductory video with friends and networks.
This is beautifully ambitious and despite what you say about it perhaps being cliche, the journey is indeed what’s important here :))
Many thanks for your efforts, I am very grateful.
Thank you so much and welcome. Yes, please explore the channel. My videos are not high tech but I have tried to create a body of work that benefits people’s learning. I will be grateful of any help in promoting the channel so that more people can use it and benefit from it.
And yes, not cliche at all, the journey is more important than the destination.
Hats off, when will our professors teach like this
Thank you
Ahh I was looking for like this session. I purchased orientalism of Edward, but I couldn't be read, bcz of my less understanding power and lack of full command in English language. Thanks. I think this lecture would be a much searched for. Thanks again
Thank you. This is an ongoing series and I hope to record the whole book.
Thank you so much for this, Professor! I'm a distance learner and your channel has made my research (while engaging in its own right) a little less isolating. I hope you'll consider doing a UA-cam reading on Homi K Bhabha's ''The Location of Culture' someday, too. Thank you so much again for the insightful discussions in your videos!
Thank you. I am delighted to know that. I will record on Bhabha only after I have reread him carefully.
@@masoodraja Thank you so much, Professor. I'm looking forward to it!
I have read the book.It is very complex but when you understand it then you know what a precious gem this book is....Great book and explanation by Sir Masood Raja...👍

The link for the handout doesn't work.
I wonder if you are willing to upload it again? Thank you.
Thank you. I will remove that link, as I no longer have access to that.
@@masoodraja I wonder if there's any other way you could kindly share the handout? It would be appreciated if I could have it to read along the video.

@@2UMADINA Great. I am still figuring it out. But it will get better:)
Professor Raja thank you so much for your considerable effort and contribution. It's very helpful! Could you please provide some bibliography on the controversy of the epigraph on Marx? It's not the first time that I encounter this kind of criticism regarding Said's "out-of-context" usage of ideas and whatsoever and would like to examine that thoroughly. (I've read about similar "accusations" regarding his writing on the intellectual combining Gramsci and Benda, and Auerbach's Mimesis).
Thank you. That quote comes from Marx’s essay: www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1852/18th-brumaire/ch07.htm. You can read it in context at this link.
Here is the Mrx quote within its original context:
“The small-holding peasants form a vast mass, the members of which live in similar conditions but without entering into manifold relations with one another. Their mode of production isolates them from one another instead of bringing them into mutual intercourse. The isolation is increased by Frances’s bad means of communication and by the poverty of the peasants.
They are consequently incapable of enforcing their class interests in their own name, whether through parliament or through a convention. They cannot represent themselves, they must be represented. Their representative must at the same time appear as their master, as an authority over them, as an unlimited governmental power that protects them against the other classes and sends them rain and sunshine from above. The political influence of the small-holding peasants, therefore, finds its final expression in the executive power subordinating society to itself.”
@@masoodraja Thanks so much
Thank you
It was very helpful.Thank you Sir

I still have a question how can apply Oriontalism to other lectures for example shooting an elephant or Marrakech by George orwell 🤔 !!
I guess the problem is thinking of theory as something to apply. In my opinion any theory can be used to understand a text. In case if the Orwell story you could see what kind of attributes are associated to the natives? How are they represented? Etc. etc.
Please expand this topic more. I mean explain the further text too.
Yes, that is the plan. The second video on it just went live.
Sir could you please elaborate more on How *Oriental Splendour, Cruelty and Sensuality* are related to the discourse of Orientalism
It is pretty simple if you read the book: all associations with an exilotic orient would fall into this category. And same goes for any suggestions of essentialized so called cruelty of Orientals.
Could you expand upon the meaning of "surrogate" in Said's thesis? I think of "surrogate" as being with respect to a particular context, however the context Said has in mind is unclear to me.
I think surrogate in this sense is as an exotic or lesser substitute or other useful in either proving or stabilizing the European self identity.
Here is a video response: ua-cam.com/video/KZdy3fve8zA/v-deo.html
Sir, I have been watching your lectures and been doing my own research. I am writing a paper on Orientalism however I get confused about how to address it. I was told by my instructor that claiming that the theory being applied [to the text in my paper] is Orientalism, because it is much bigger than just a theory. I understand that it is more a movement and an outlook, however, then what theoretical framework can it be defined as?
Thank you. Sorry, I cannot answer it here. But if you join our webinar this coming Saturday and pose your question I will try to address it. Just look at the Community section of the channel for the link to the webinar.
@@masoodraja Thank you. I'll look forward to the webinar and hope to have my doubts cleared by then by going over the topic again.
Did the representation of the orient as exotic, romantic or sensual have something to do with European's way to legalize the colonization of the orient? I can't exactly catch it. I have ideas but not sure about them. Thank you.
Thank you. Yes, it enabled them to offer a certain unchanging view of the Orient. But read the book, as that is one thing that Said is elaborating.
How do you interpret the painting 'Snake Charmer' that is on the cover of this book?
It is an orientalist painting; that’s why Said probably used it.
I know but how is it an Orientalist painting? Does the naked boy represent the West and the rest of the background present the East? Does his nudity shows a condescending attitude towards the Eastern religion?
@memoonarasool8766 It is actually one of the Dutch paintings that Said talks about. If you take the time to read the book you will learn that most of what is represented in the painting is what Said calls the orientalist tropes etc. But you will see such things only after you have read the book carefully. As for what everything means in the cover, please make your own informed interpretations.
Thank you
Aoa kia aap ne existentialism pe b kaam kia hay? AGR abi krna hay to please isko aap Urdu me Punjabi k tarke k sath Karen. Bohat mushkil topic hay,it would be remarkable service if you do in Urdu. Your 10 minute lecture on Orientalism in Urdu is great effect on my mind.
Thank you. I will see what I can do. I have not recorded anything on existentialism
Dr thank you much! kindly record some lectures on post 9/11 literature of America.
Thank you. I will try but it is not part of my area of expertise.
@@masoodraja Dr it is somehow based on certain stereotypes regarding the East which you have referred to it your lectures. Updike’s terrorise, the reluctant fundamentalist, the last days of M Atta and so on and so forth are based on such stereotypes which create further divisions and hatred.
Obviously you already have an idea about them. I am not an Americanist so I have not spent much time on these texts.

When Edward said writes orientalism is a style of thought so what does it mean?.

Orientalist is one who teaches, writes about or researches the orient. If an occidrnt is doing the same, will he be called the orientalist?
If he is not an orientalist so then who will be the orientalist. Kindly teach me.
Probably not and the answer to that is in the book and in my discussion of it as well. You might also want to watch this video: ua-cam.com/video/DWbTm6-bc30/v-deo.html
Check out the doctrine of Christian discovery by Daniel n Paul, Dr. Said was a new kid on the block.

Sir my question is not so pertinent, what do you think that why and how the limited Britishers took control of such a huge population.....
Thank you. There were various reasons for this and many writers have explained those. I would say they were able to use already existing differences and rivalries effectively.
Please sir upload this video in urdu God bless you Sir
Thank you. Sorry, that will be a much larger project and since it is important to understand this book in English that is why these reading discussions are in English. I am not sure I have the expertise to translate it or discuss it.
Why the idea of orientalism related to geography
I think it is related to geography as well as conceptional production of knowledge. Said, just wanted to see how this one region is represented in Europe. You can apply it any regions of your choice. But I do recommend reading the book very carefully,
@@masoodraja thanks 🙂🙂
Assalam o Alaikum.
Sir, no doubt you are doing a great job but if you will teach bilingual that will be more easy to understand because this book is so difficult to understand. Jazak Allah.

Science is inventive and does art is inventive

How to understand the rising hindu fundamentalism in India, the violence against minorities under postcolonial lens? Any books, articles to suggest.
