  • Adrian Newey's exit from Red Bull in F1 is now official, with the team announcing he will leave early in 2025. Until then, Newey will step back from F1 design work, focusing on finishing the RB17 hypercar project he has led, and attending selected F1 races over the rest of 2024 to assist the team at trackside.
Scott Mitchell-Malm and Edd Straw join Glenn Freeman to discuss how a nearly two-decade relationship that has resulted in so many world championships could reach a point of no-return.

For sure! Used to be that the "silly season" referred to the goings on over the winter break. It seems now that "silly season" starts pretty much after the first couple of races, once everyone knows which team will win the constructors championship. With the calendar being as packed as it is, and now F1 has exceeded even Ecclestone's ambitions (as much of a good thing as it is bad).
I've been an F1 fan for decades (started to get in to the sport in the mid 90s), but this is by far the silliest of seasons. It's actually got me to feel less excited about the sport. It's not the fact that Verstappen wins almost all the time (we've had that throughout F1 history), it's not because I'm some kind of bitter Hamilton fanboy. F1 has always been equal parts politics, nerdy engineering stuff (which I love), and driving prowess. This season, with the RB/Horner stuff, it feels like not just inter-team politics, but team office politics, and FIA housekeeping make up about 50% of the goings on, then 20% engineering, 20% driving, and 10% of marketing make up the rest. I watched the first season of drive to survive, and thought it was a decent way to get more eyes on my beloved sport, but I didn't expect it to bring in quite this many people, who all seem to think that DTS was a 100% accurate, truthful documentary, and not a typical reality TV show where the actual sequence of events was edited to give a more salacious and dramatic account of events.
Let me be clear: if DTS is why you're now watching F1, that's absolutely fine. If you watch F1 because you're Dutch and Verstappen is your guy, equally fine. Your reasons for being interested in the sport are just as valid as mine. What I'm finding annoying is that DTS was an even bigger success than hoped for, and I feel like certain people at the helm of F1 are looking to repeat that success by whipping up artificial drama, and if that goes unchecked for a couple more seasons, there's going to be little difference between F1 and WWE.
      /rant
Anyay, I do hope Newey stays in F1 despite all this. Loved seeing a desginer/engineer of his calibre being old school enough to be down in the pits. He seems to be talking about "new challenges", in a way that suggests a departure from F1, but I'm hoping that either a return to McLaren isn't off the table, or perhaps Audi are considering setting up shop in the UK (IIRC Newey has repeatedly turned down offers from Ferrari because he doesn't want to relocate)

  • @KingWeir
    @KingWeir 20 днів тому +218

Forget the drivers, Newey is singlehandedly the most important person of the last 30 years.
Every team he's joined, within a few years won everything.
And every team he's left, have slowly stopped down the grid as his leftover ideas dried up.
Williams carried on fighting for championships in the short term but effectively slipped further and further back until they were propping up the grid.
    McLaren exact same situation.
So I suspect, Red Bull will continue to fight on for the next few years but will drop off as well, well they go as far back as Williams and McLaren have on the grid, seems unlikely but also the idea that they would drop that far seemed unlikely at the time as well.

Red Bull did create a Technical Director role for Waché and have kind of been sidelining Newey since the present regs appeared, so maybe he isn't so humble as we tend to think. It's kind of interesting that Newey as an aero guy has made comments before implying that he spent all his time on the suspension for the 2022-2024 cars when suspension is more Waché's field as a tire and suspension guy.
If we look at his patterns of behavior, the man leaves teams when he doesn't get to have extreme degrees of decision-making, including famously that he wanted to be able to choose the drivers. He was pro Mansell, pro Damon Hill and later anti Montoya despite that Montoya is probably a much better driver, and things at Mclaren ended up devolving into in-fighting where Mercedes suggested his designs weren't accommodating for the engines and was leading to reliability issues. The man also has a history of the occasional fundamentally flawed aero design that doesn't get owned up to for half a season. Prost said the Williams cars were difficult and annoying to drive even when they had active suspension, there was an entire Mclaren design that had to go unused, and the 2019-2020 Red Bulls had aero gremlins that made them want to spin out.

@frogandspanner he's 65 now. Could turn 66 this year. Will be released from employment from RB spring 2025. They easily could leave the non compete clause in place for a year after release (his original contract was end of 2025). That could put him off the table until end of 2026. Hence, he'd be a few years older.

Here is a strong reason why we are likely to see Newey at Ferrari:
    - David Sanchez was the technical director at ferrari and he left to go to McLaren. He recently departed from McLaren stating his role was too divided and wanted more control over the technical development of the car.
    - Newey has expressed opinions that he felt he hasn't received enough credit working at redbull and in recent years redbull has adopted the 3-pillar-leadership-approach.
    - Ferrari still allows their technical director much more control of the cars development than most other teams.
    - Newey has expressed a desire to work with Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari in the past.
If Newey does not join Ferrari in 2026, then he must know when the world is ending.

The idea that Newey doesn't get enough credit is complete nonsense of the last 3 dominant champions two of them are credited to Newey Martin Brundle even called him the most important man in F1 when he stood on the podium with Vettel. If anything he gets far too much credit form the salty British media who didn't hail Mike Elliot as an engineering God when his cars won everything the difference being their favourite driver was driving them.

Doubtless people will try and say it's because they don't have him anymore but there was nothing even he could do in 2014 with a terrible engine. Ironically it was Enzo Ferrari who famously said "aerodynamics are for people who can't build engines" and the last time the engines had major regulation changes Ferrari and Red Bull suffered from poor engine development.

With his pass success Newey deserves much of the praise for the Red Bull. You don’t pay £10 Million for a Guy if he’s only going to make a small difference as part of a bigger team. The sister team ran the same engine, gearbox etc. but were never as quick as in F1 you have to build and design your own chassis as a constructor. Without Newey Red Bull would just another team, which all have good design and aerodynamic guys, but no one outstanding. Brawn is another with such skills. Newey must be fairly well off so he could work from home doing consulting work for Ferrari, for a healthy fee, or go to a low grid team and make them a race winner before he retires.

There isnt really a huge surprise here. The RB17 hypercar is his passion. He wants to be where he has the unabated freedom to create, and F1 is no longer it. He wont go to ferrari, aston or merc because it would be the same stifling regulations. With Eddie as his manager and his ties to maranello, it’d be very easy negotiations for him when he picks a team, eddie could sell milk to a cow, he would get a work out of uk deal done if adrian wanted to. Which will be unprecedented in modern times.
For aston martin lawrence probably aleeady has a signed blank check for him ready with whatever condition, say pull lance out of seat if adrian has any sort of an issue then he can maybe drive the smaller valkyrie in lemans first to prove himself lol. maybe a big aston martin deal w some road car partnership prospect or royalty of sorts.nevertheless, it speaks volume about the titan adrian is.
Over 3or so decades he’s absolutely dominated the track of the highest engineering motorsport competition won shiteloads titles and over 200wins. He’s second to none.
Ej will absolutely at the very least when adrian decides w a team see to it to have a couple hundred milli shekkel and ownership or a revenue % deal + every single term adrian wants and could possibly think of.
Lord have mercy on redbull for its inevitable shift of key headcount and the negotiating people who will sit across eddie while putting up the contract.

Newey Ain't going to Ferrari or any other team.
There are no Credible source for it just some fans spreading rumours .
Also Newey is so much respected within Redbull that he won't harm them by joining another team for loads of money which RB can easily Cash out if that was the case.
The Atmosphere that he gets in RB also cannot be achieved under any other team.
He is just leaving F1 for a while to work on other stuff
      And that's Understandable
The amount of responsibility he had on his shoulders for 20 straight years would be Overwhelming for even the best of the best.
He needs some time to rest n enjoy life
Max has won 4 championships now.
And RB also has achieved alot under Newey era as a whole

While you have to credit Newey for his work at RB they have plenty expertise within the team. That wont secure success as they couldn't prevent Mercedes from dominating with Newey. But they wont fall of on their own terms.

Newey has been in F1 for 43 very successful years , almost half of those years with Red Bull.
He has never let money sway him to stay anywhere he doesn't want be and that is very unique in this world where money is the only language people seem to understand these days. Whatever he does I salut the man not only for his genius but of the person he is.
It did strike me as bittersweet that he announced his departure on the first of May, a day in history where the greatest driver of all time was taken from us way to early.
Senna drove up to the heavens that day in a car from the greatest engineer of all times : Adrian Newey.

Also other driver have like Nikki louder/Alan prost/ Jim clerk and few other's all started of in top team's and never went to a lower down the grid. Vettel. You can really add max into that he did one session at RB sister team and at the time they was competitive to. It's not a privilege It's doing well in the lower racing series. What had max done before that apart from carting nothing, he come up into f1 had more crashes then anyone on the grid and broken more rules but was still handed a top sport.

I personally think he should go to Honda.
Honda can use and keep a person like Newey happy and occupied with the list below.
    Honda Jet (Something different).
Honda Hypercar/Supercar (something similar but different, which Honda may need for a new NSX etc)
Honda F1 (Honda can keep the door open for when Newey has enough of a break, both as an Engine supplier or making a works team).
Honda boats (Possible new market for Honda and Newey gets to fulfill his change to hydrodynamics).
Mugen (With aero bits for the factory)
Lower racing class (Super formula etc)
No other manufacturer can give so much option to Newey.
