The difference between hip-hop and rap and this is coming from a Metal rocker. But foremost I am a musician and I happen to be Well studied . With hip-hop the lyrics are very sing songy. And don’t have to make sense The words flow to the point where as A backing beat is usually not necessary as you will Bob your head to a flow when heard. A great example and probably one of the greatest is Ill reference an artist by the name of Curtis blow and I’ll quote”To the hip hop the hippie the hippie to the hip-hop the rock and bang bang the bop to the bang bang boogie and up jump the boogie to the rhythm of the boogie to be” With hip-hop the words don’t have to make sense as much as the sounds of the words are actually used percussively or as instruments themselves and the Consonant clusters are usually dropped on time or in a complimentary time and often vary or change to keep the listener from getting bored. With rap it is quite different in that usually there is a message or a story being told and usually rap is very poetic using all of the pros of poetry and is graded it that way.
you have it backwards real hip hop has meaning to the lyrics and has substance and performed by EMCEES, such as Redman, Biggie, Nas, and Method Man. these guys perform hip hop to the fullest because they respect the craft and the culture and what it means to be a REAL EMCEE not a rapper. In fact Redman has a video explaining the difference, you might wanna check it out Bro.
@@dahip-hopbarbershoppresent4500 I’ll do you one even better, there’s a minute video clip of Rakim breaking down the distinction between an e MCee and a rapper. That there is the G*d of the genre isn’t it? Anyways, whatever he says, that’s what’s written in stone.
Nice vid. I'm more into hard rock/heavy metal/nu metal but it's nice to learn about other genres and their history. I like to listen to 90's hip hop stuff sometimes like 2pac, snoop dogg, Dr Dre and Ice Cube those are my favorites. I like Eminem as well. So if you have any other recommendations let me know :) . Keep up the good work.
Ohhh boy you got a long list ahead of you if you really want suggestions. I’ll simplify and categorize it though. Gang Starr - East Coast, consists of Guru and DJ Premier. Very jazzy and record scratch heavy, Guru is my personal favorite. Recommend the whole Moment of Truth album. Their whole catalogue is near perfect i also love Daily Operation and Hard to Earn. Nas - East Coast, one of if not the most gifted poetic MC to ever do it. Illmatic is widely considered the best album in hip hop. It Was Written is just as much so. Personal favorite album is Stillmatic. Outkast - Southern Hip Hop, consists of Andre 3000 and Big Boi. Some of the smoothest flow and production of all time on their Aquemini album. But ATLiens is fantastic too. Andre has never had a weak verse. Wu Tang - East coast, very hardcore rap with some unreal subject matter and production from RZA. It’s a lot to listen to but I’d start with 36 Chambers Enter the Wu Tang. Seriously if you only listen to west coast G Funk and Eminem this will blow your mind. Mos Def - East Coast, very underrated MC and I haven’t gone through all of his stuff but his style is one of a kind. Very street conscious and sometimes great at singing. Black on Both Sides is a great place to start or his album with Talib Kweli called We Are Blackstar. Souls of Mischief - West Coast, consists of 3 MCs A-plus, Tajai, and Opio. very different sound and style from most west coast at that time. 93 til infinity is a classic. BDP - East Coast, the debut album of Boogie Down Productions which is Criminal Minded. Consists of KRS One and Scott La Rock. KRS went on solo after Scott died and is basically the Hip Hop scholar, seriously dude is very vocal and highly intelligent. You can check out any of his solo works. DMX - East Coast, you live under a rock if you haven’t heard X. But I’d listen through his first album It’s Dark and Hell is Hot…no one besides Pac brings this kinda energy. Mobb Deep - East Coast, consists of Prodigy and Havok. The comment above already mentioned it but they are also from Queens, very gritty production but hauntingly good. The Infamous and Hell on Earth or both classic. UGK - Southern, consists of Pimp C and Bun B. Recommend Ridin Dirty, fun and bumpy tracks with lots of storytelling, but showed that the south had something to say because no one took them seriously. Scarface - Southern, another southern artist with some of the best storytelling I’ve ever heard. The Diary is excellent. Slick Rick - East Coast, Rick is british and a pioneer in Hip Hop best known for storytelling. He’s different from pretty much everyone i mentioned so far but listen to The Art of Storytelling, some amazing songs. Lauryn Hill - East Coast i believe, mix of rnb and rap. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill saved a lot of people from destroying their lives and isn’t mentioned nearly enough as an essential in Hip Hop. Jay Z - East Coast, not the biggest fan personally but his voice is iconic. His best work is his debut album Reasonable Doubt. Bone Thugs N Harmony - West Coast, signed by Easy E himself. Consists of Bizzy Bone, Layzie Bone, Krayzie Bone, Wish Bone, and Flesh n Bone. The way they all harmonize rhyme so quickly is a slap to the face to Ben Shapiro’s ‘Rap isn’t music there’s no melody or harmony.’ E. 1999 Eternal is their debut album. Seriously these guys brought a new style and sub genre, one of the groups or people who started the chopper flow or ‘fast rapping’ The Notorious B.I.G. - East coast, I’m sure you already heard his stuff but Ready to Die is a perfect introduction into this genre. Eric B and Rakim - East coast, you can’t have anything related to Hip Hop and not talk about Rakim. He’s called the God MC. But he inspired lyricism and really pushed the boundaries of rhymes….it’s the reason Eminem is as good as he is. Paid In Full is their debut it’s classic 80’s. Das Efx - East Coast, Crazy Drazy and Books who also go by Dre and Skoob. These guys aren’t given enough credit to pioneering different styles and flows with iggity and diggity. Dead Serious is their first album but my personal favorite song from them is called Jungle..it’s one of those truly special tracks. Give them a listen for more fun laid back music. Big L - East Coast, Big Daddy Kane made punchlines but this kid mastered and perfected the art. You’ll never hear a more raw talent aside from maybe Nas than this guy. He was something special and was killed too soon. Lifestylez Ov Da Poor and Dangerous is hardcore gangsta rap. Masta Ace - East Coast, very underrated and he directly inspired early Eminem flow. I always tell people if you love Eminem you’ll love Masta Ace. Disposable Arts or A Long Hot Summer are both some of his best work you’ll be impressed with the quality this guy has. MF DOOM - The Madvillain, another british rapper. He’s for the far more experienced Hip Hop Heads as he’s very complex and references things left and right…most of his own fans don’t catch his bars and wordplays. Seriously you won’t find more unique style anywhere else because of his villain persona he always wore a metal mask. Madvillainy is my favorite album but Operation Doomsday is probably better to start with. There’s honestly hundreds of underground and underrated MCs from old school and now i still find but these are just a handful i can think of to spread you across the genre and hit different areas from street and gangster rap, to more poetic and jazzy styles, to hardcore rhymes and sounds, to harmony and fun, some rnb and soul. This genre is massive and interconnected as you’ll start to realize. Have fun :)
