#dryden fully agree, too many filler stuff and parallels for my taste, so i decided to only collect OPC (since i collected as a kid even tho UD produces it now) and Upper Deck itself... and i've stopped getting boxes to cut down on sheer number of doubles, so i just get sets online and if something seems too expensive, i wait

Credentials just doesnt move the needle for me. And that's fine, we all have that product in the hobby that just doesnt do it for us. It's not a bad product. Glad you enjoyed it and glad you got a sick pull.

Great hit. I have high hopes for Wright. He is still extremely young and has plenty of time to develop. I am in your corner when it comes to the current state of the hobby. It's just a matter of supply and demand. The demand rose so UD is doing what it has to, to capitalize on that demand. It's nothing new but people are going to complain no matter what. I always point out to people that this is a hobby and like every hobby out there you never get back more money than you put into it. But the joy you get out of it is priceless.

Agree on all counts. A few guys who wear too much cologne made a bit of money during the pandemic due to fortunate timing. So, for a hot minute, everyone thought card companies owed them something, as a cash windfall. I was just commenting elsewhere on here that my Pro Set boxes cost me $50 in 1990, which is $120 in today's dollars. What do they go for on eBay today? $15? How was that for value! ...And I doubt all the smart people complaining about UD were geniuses and bought cases of 1979-80 OPC and 2015-16 The Cup, SPA, or OPCP. And then never opened them. That would have been investing. Buying products they don't inherently like on release day in a hobby oversaturated with ppl throwing their money away on group break with disclosed dismal odds is hardly a money making venture. Yes, I did pay 20c for my 1979-80 OPC pack with Gretzky in it. I only had to hold onto it for 40 years for it to be worth a month of rent or mortgage (and avoid dying of natural causes in the interim). I held onto my Messier RC for 40 years too. He's third all-time in scoring. And yet many of his contemporary autos are worth more than those RCs. What has the S&P done in the past 40 years compared to my Messier RC?

First time I see a Credentials box opening. Funny story about Shane Wright. My son and I and his friends attended the Draft in Montreal. One of his friends decided to purchase a red Canadians jersey with Shane Wright name put on the jersey as the number one pick. Well we know who was chosen as number one. A disappointment for him of course. Great content. #DRYDEN
Ya, that makes no sense to me. I still have no clue who will be the best player from that draft given the parity. Out of the gate, it's probably Cooley. But so far, Slaf has the most games played, most goals, most assists, and most points from that class. I def get why we drafted him. All he does is cut to the net like Kreider or Stone.

Ya I collect for fun first & then value 2nd. Ya it stinks when you spend $100-$200 & you basically get barely anything for your money but everyone should know by now its "Buyer Beware" with every single UD product as hockey card breaking is a form of gambling. You don't like it then don't buy. Simple economics. Thanks for sharing the break. :)

There are so many products, including historical ones still available, as cards have always been mass produced. So, everyone can find their "hobby" niche, or wait for the seasonal sale. Release day is precisely the wrong time to buy a product. But, I was just thinking that a box of Pro Set was like CAD $50 when it was first released in 1990. That's, what, $120 today? Was that good value? And, if you held on to those boxes for 34 years, a box would be worth how much today? $15? What does that tell us? How many ppl on social media going on about good and bad card value were smart enough to put away cases of 1979-80 OPC and 2015-16 The Cup or SPA?
And ya. I got my Wayne Gretzky OPC rookie card in a 20c pack in 1979-80. But, how long did I have to hold onto it for it to be worth something? 45 years? And Gretzky was the one sure bet. Note that a contemporary high-end Messier Auto can be worth more than his rookie cards, which I've held onto for 45 years. Anyone who talks about cards as having inherent value - or blaming UD - are only speaking to one side of the ledger. What are all their sunk costs? They should disclose them. If people are interested in "investments" they should invest in equities. Cards are a pass-time. They are a form of gaming. Just because cards hyper inflate during a pandemic or a generational talent year, doesn't mean they are sound financially. They aren't. Cards are an expense, unless you put in your 10,000 hours to figure out the market. And even if you do, there is an opportunity cost in not parking that money actual markets, which accrue with certainty. Like what has the S&P done over the past 45 years?

15/16 FF and UD Profiles are not supposed to be pretty. The entire point is they are campy. And, for what it's worth, I find UD The Cup so cliched and gaudy. Cup RPAs look like they were designed by a pretentious hotel bellhop, who couldn't identify a piece of art if he were sitting on it.

The 2021-22 boxes have halved in price. But, I think this year's product is better.

Nice hit, I hope that player does turn out for the better. People should collect to collect. I personally think it's ok to be upset with configurations or changes to typical formats but it's how you share that opinion is important. Sometimes I feel UD needs to be held accountable for their quality control issues and such. That said, I totally understand your point of view on collecting. I would still be collecting myself if I had more disposable income but unfortunately, most products are out of reach for me in this current economy of inflation (inflation for everything, not just cards). Configurations again on the hit! #Dryden
I hear you brother. Put given the card populations, most box prices should tank. Release day has unfair multipliers due to the "new" factor and all the group break middle-men. I remember in 2015-16, UD products were $100 out of the gate, and then as low as $25 during fire sales. You can always find value in the hobby, especially if you know the true value of a dollar, and narrow your focus. It just takes some patience.

Oh I'd give it a good five years. Responsible two-way centre Swiss army knives don't grow on trees. He was always in the Ryan O'Reilly mold. Other than the narrow few who are NHL ready, we can never gauge a draft class out of the gate. I mean, who was talking about Pastrnak in 2014, or Mark Stone in 2012?
