Big Blue: Conrail Tribute

(Conrail) Consolidated Railroad or "Conrail" officially began operations in the northeast railroads in April 1976. One by one, the 6 major northeast railroads were forced into bankrupcy do to competition from trucks, outdated regulations, and Hurricane Agnes (1972) that did heavy damage, especially to Penn Central and Erie Lackawanna. The Federal Gov't, with recommendations from the USRA, merged the 6 major lines into Conrail. Conrail began turning things around by 1981 and was profitable until 1997, when it was sold and split between Norfolk Southern and CSX. The Pride of the fleet were the 5000hp SD 80MACs, nicknamed "Conrail Cadillacs" Sadly the big blue paint schemes once found on RR's all over the east, are quickly disappearing. I remember that one day on Jan 5, 2000. I watched an Conrail through my Grandfathers house. Oh he was In tears to see them go and see them for the last years of his life

The macs diesel locomotive i saw 2234 and gp20 gp30 gp40 diesel locomotive no 1691 both in conrail blue back in 1997 at 7 years old at sterling hights storage freight yard good times wonder where those two diesel locomotives are if they are in service

If I'm rich I'm gonna bring Conrail back +if you look Conrail up they still run on switching service owned by CSX and NS but are still called and are technically Conrail

Let me just say this I can never railfan with 100% happiness because there's no more conrail's, Stupid NS and CSX just had to repaint them like!!! Whenever I see a dash 8 I only see Conrail NOT some fake other wanna be's!! On the side note that song rings out to my heart I will die a true blue Conrail fan!!!
