Taking players who might NOT normally get the chance to see the 'big stage' has become the DEI normal in hockey. I saw it in the North as I defended the inclusion of adults in the Arctic Winter Games; we were building a program (Allen Cup Champs 1993) and knew [that] was where our future leadership would come from. In a live CBC T.V. debate, six moms were live in Yellowknife and I was on a studio-stool in Whitehorse. I made the argument about leadership and development and they were dumbfounded...I was not invited back. Our men's program continued without the AWG showcase and 40 years later many of our best former players are still contributing. Players like Dylan Cousins and Gavin McKenna have learned from (former) Whitehorse Senior Hockey League allstars who still preach the same ethic and skills to kids in the Yukon. Today, a similar DEI message is coming from the weak "inclusive" direction in Hockey Canada. This DEI initiative comes straight from the Canadian Minister of Sport. Without a returne to the basics in Canadian Hockey we'll never see a recovery in our game.
Matthews puts himself ahead of the Leafs. Always has, always will. If he plays in the Four Nations Faceoff and gets injured and is out for the foreseeable future, how will Leaf fans react? If the Leafs knew what was wrong .. he wouldn't be going to Germany to see a specialist.

4 Nations is a stop gap until Bettman and his cronies device a more boring All Star competition... here's an idea to make the game interesting winner East vs West gets home ice advantage for Cup Final.
Add your idea to All Star weekend. Also allow NHL players to compete in best-on-best international tournament like Connor McDavid, Brad Marchant, and many other pros have expressed interest in. A World Cup like other sports have, McDavid himself concluded. Who doesn't want to know who the most competitive hockey nation in the world is?
Bure was great every year when not injured, Petty not so much. If Vancouver wants to win than Petty is the one that has to go this year before the no trade kicks in.

If your point is that putting Auston Matthews on LTIR won't necessarily bring a new player who will improve the team towards a Stanley Cup is the wrong argument. That might be what fans feel. That is were you (face of reporting) to point out the correct perspective. The reason to put A.M. on the LTIR is simply to set him on rest long enough for maximum recovery benefits. Bring a or multiple players in his replacement is simply to have a full roaster. Of course I would prefer an affordable star player whose salary allows for an addition player or two for defense. Example, Crosby at 9 million Defense at 3 million (min to max space left) Maybe enough for a third player. I see Auston Matthews showing up for the 4 Nation tournament as the face of the US team. He might try to just play safe, low time on ice. He has to be there to promote the tournament to the American fans. I feel he can play safe enough to play the tournament hut after the tournament I do see Matthews not playing for the Leafs. If not put on the LTIR he will just be in and out. The random decision to play and not play could be worse than just rest. I'm surprised that you guys don't talk about why the hesitation to place Matthews on the LTIR? Is it to make Matthews available for the tournament then after he can be put on the LTIR? Is it bad publicity against the Leafs organization if they place Matthews on the LTIR? Would the Leafs be accused of blocking Matthews from playing the tournament to hinder the US on playing to their maximum potential? It all about perception and not being able to predict the future. 4 Nations is a joke, it will be like the pro bowl in NFL, complete waste of time. You will all be crying after you watch a bunch of super stars skate around without giving a flying F*&*k!
So all the major junior teams are loading up on European players to teach them N. American hockey and confidence only to have it smack our own players in the face come tournament time and draft selection.
The only people who care about hockey tournaments are the media. How are you hockey fans feeling after seeing Canada eliminated in the world juniors? Probably the same way Leaf fans feel every year after losing in the playoffs. Save your money.
If it is only Canada and US advancing in international tournaments than I agree, but the better all other hockey countries get the better quality these tournaments are. Our team just did not come together this year and a late bad call killed them.
