This is the best evaluation I've seen of the X-Tool screen printer. Thank you! I own both the laser and the screen printer. I just did a job for someone and had exactly the same problems that you described. I was trying to do a fine image and it got clogged repeatedly.
Nice to finally see a review from an experienced printer. I've seen too many videos by people who don't know how to run a laser or spread ink on a screen. XTool now has frames and screens for sale on their website. They claim their screens can be stripped and recoated with regular emulsion and reburned with the laser. One can always stay busy with other tasks during a long laser run. Single screen prints that don't need registration can be removed from the screens to make fewer frames necessary.
You’ve answered my question about fiber mesh emulsion. I wondered if the emulsion was essentially regular silk screen emulsion but without the sensitizer. No reason why you couldn’t use finer mesh screens. Might be a bit fiddly but once you got it, shouldn’t be problem. Hand you tried to expose a regular screen emulsion with the laser. Not sure if the correct screen is more resilient than typical silk. You could also speed things up, if you wish by using a stronger (more powerful) laser so you can increase the scanning rate. A very large image could take longer than the traditional approach. Lot of potential here!
@@en2oh Now this has me interested also. I have 3 large Co2 lasers and if they could be used to make the designs onto the screens instead of the inkjet printer and curing etc that would be fantastic. Seems that the curing would need to be done before a design was put on then the laser burns out the emulsion? Wonder about the effect on the screen fibers though. I dont have THIS screen printing equipment, and we are just starting out, but using a laser for our designs would be amazing.
You can honestly cut almost everything with the laser (well to a point) but the question would be if the chemical on the regular screen would pose a threat when exposed to the laser..
@Mylo Prints as an Xtool S1 10w laser owner that dabbles in the graphic design dropship t-shirt game. I am a total DIY'er and got the Xtool Screen printer so I could do some really small projects and see if I could actually make my own shirts.....This WAS a fantastic tutorial
Cool honest opinion! I just saw an ad for the product and was curious about what it did so I watched your setup and final comments. Now I'm intrigued. I like that you can print more with a regular screen print setup. But also like the "boutique" idea of this modern device. Maybe for small production or one-offs.
Thank you for this video. I finally had the courage to use that kit.(I had it in a box for a month) It is great for people that have laser engravers(like me), but because i got only one frame, it was difficult to do multi color.I think further down the line if printing kicks off I might stick to your tradiional methods.I didn't even think about the meshpart, so thank you for that point.
Thank you for your honest opinion. I already have a laser cutter and I’m just looking to be a very small hobby seller so thank you for helping with my buyer’s remorse. I feel better now.
Can you achieve a similar result with ANY laser cutter? I bought a 16x16” one off Amazon for school before getting into screenprinting and was wondering if I can get by with that. It’s a 20 Watt. I guess alignment could be an issue, but shouldn’t it be possible w any regular laser engraver if you optimize it correctly?
Your videos are the best breakdown/ review of this this xTOOL screen print starter kit ever. I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed this review because it gave me so much clarity on this piece of equipment and you gave some great advice and showed why we should use the Plastisol ink instead of the water based ink with the screen printing. This would definitely be for me, not only because of my space but also my time. Wonderful job!!

I just got the multiple color kit. Can’t wait to try it out. On a side note, I think you mean “Super Fast” in your thumbnail for this video, not “Supper” - that’s the meal.
Great video showing how to use the kit and explanations of the various processing steps. Do you know if a different type of ink can be used that will help stop the drying of the ink on the screen like the water based inks?
Wow very clever and innovative! I enjoyed watching your breadown and process. Also cool to see your from my hometown Chicago!!!!! I worked as a graphic designer and illustrator for a screen printing company in Bolingbrook for a long time. Have to check you out the next time i'm in town,
I spoke to customer service an hour ago. They do not have a screen release date yet. Thats super unfortunate. My kit came with 3 but I know I'm going to need at least 5 for my project. Now I'm on youtube looking up alternative screens. Xtool DID say you can use some sort of solvent to dissolve the .. im forgetting the word but the blue coating and then use a normal coating to reapply to reuse the screen with a new design.
Great video. I want this to be a hobby. About 30 years ago, I used to do screen printing, but this is really an amateur type of fun. Quick question what do you suggest as t-shirts to print on?
I remember learning about silk screening in high school. It was 1996 and we had a machine that would automatically burn your screens. You would feed a black ink copy of your image sandwiched with a special pre-emulsified screen sheet (8.5x11). No washing or rinsing required. I've been searching for that machine, but with no luck.
Great Video! Is it possible to reclaim the screens? Is it worth it? If you were going to do it what products would you recommend? I have dabbled in screen printing in the past, so I have some experience. I just ordered this set up for all the reason you mentioned. I have limited space in my office, time and I’m a hobbyist. I also already have a laser.
I hate to say this but I recommend this. They make better machines that cost 25k that burn screens in 5 seconds; not 2 hours. It’s easier to do it the traditional way.
@@moshemcnally2970 The xtool is a machine for home users. I am fairly sure, none of those wants to pay 25k - for just the exposure unit. You'd still need film-positive printers, frames, drying racks, tools to coat the mesh and so on. If you do it as business, sure. But I'd rather pay rent for three years instead of buying that professional equipment.
Can you use classic screens with the laser cutter. As in, can I add a screen (emulsion) to a screen and use the laser to cut the design rather than burn them with UV? If so, how do we ensure multiple layers line up correctly? Thank you!
can you etch on other things iwth this machine? could you etch on actual shirts at a really low power setting? could be cool if it does some fabric discoloration at really low power.
To check if you have correct tension, you need a newton reader The best tension is around 24 Newton's. And there's no way you can tighten that screen more down. On that tiny frame
Now this has me interested. I have 3 large Co2 lasers and if they could be used to make the designs onto the screens instead of the inkjet printer and curing etc that would be fantastic. great video but I don't get it, is the screen meshed allowing the color going through or is the laser creating the mesh where the color will go through
hi, first thx for the video, I would like to kmow where did you bought the black plastic tool to lock the printing screen in the middle under the laser plz
Can the frames be used on a multi-arm rotary instead of having to change out the frame for each color for every product? I like the idea of burning the screens but using the single frame fixture seems really tedious. But if they can be mounted onto a standard rotary, then we’re getting somewhere.
I have an xTool M1 and I'm looking at getting this screen printing kit. I'm curious, though... I haven't seen anyone cover what happens when you take the screens off of the frame. Can you put them back on to use them again in the future?
if you haven't got your answer, yes its possible but its definitely a bitch n a half without the piece of cardboard the screens come with, i haven't tried adding some kinda backer myself to alleviate that
