England's history is filled with fascinating tales, from the Viking Age and medieval knights to the Industrial Revolution and the Victorian era. The country boasts historic castles, legendary figures, and world-shaping events. Every corner of England tells stories of the past, offering a unique allure for any history enthusiast.
In addition to the quality history, I really appreciate your maps with the mountain ranges and rivers picked out. It's often difficult to visualize on a flat map.
The fact that each side could use France as a base to regroup and recuperate after defeats truly made this conflict far longer than it should have been.
Game of Thrones isn't inspired by any part of English history. Majority is inspired by pre Enland Brythonic history. The red wedding is based on the 6th century Anglo Saxons betrayal of the Britons at a peace conference.
many parts of that book series are derivative of the war of the roses tbh. Probably less apparent to an American audience, but we are taught this stuff.
[1:15] John of Gaunt's father-in-law, Henry of Grosmont, a great-grandson of Hen. 3 via his 2nd son Edmund, was the first Duke of York. His ducal title went extinct when he died without a male heir, leaving two daughters. When the elder daughter herself died with children, John petitioned for the received the title, as his wife Blanche was Grosmont's 2nd daughter.
0:10 Edward III didn’t restore, rather he created Dukedom’s in England. There is a significant difference as there were no duke’s before his time - highest rank in the non-royal nobility being Earl. The power of the Dukes caused problems, so it is pertinent to make this distinction. Really important to Englands history as it’s clear we weren’t able to deal with this alteration to the hierarchical structure. It infamously opened a can of worms - from this point onwards - and that’s why it’s crucial to mention it was the FIRST time Dukedoms were created
again great video, but do we really need the background music? I would prefer it without it. I find it really distracting from your voice and it makes it more difficult to follow.
Aye, Pontefract is jus’up road. We got us own flag an’all. The County of Yorkshire flag is a White Rose on a blue background. And each of the four ridings in Yorkshire have their own flags.
never got why it was called the english civil war unless its more like THE english civil war if it was the deadliest? even if it doesnt have the deadliest battle
The map for this is not just misleading, it's plain wrong! The Laws in Wales Acts 1535 and 1542 created the Union between Wales and England. Furthermore, no part of Ireland was ever part of 'England.' The English control of Ireland was called the Lordship of Ireland. The Isle of Mann has NEVER been part of the Kingdom of England. It has always been Autonomous from England. If you're going to produce historical documentaries, stop using factually innacurate information!
That game drives me mad. You work for hours to consolidate power, then you have to give it all up to your children, then you play as just one of the children, and all your brothers are your rivals. Then you play for hours to consolidate power... Rinse and repeat. Maybe I just never cracked the code for absolute power, but there should be a mechanism for saying "fuck the others, this child gets my land", even if it's unpopular.
@@JackChurchill101 "Maybe I just never cracked the code for absolute power, but there should be a mechanism for saying "fuck the others, this child gets my land", even if it's unpopular." If you’re going to give history lessons, you should REALLY take the time to learn the correct pronunciations of names and places. The Battle of Towton and the Beaufort line deserve that.
English history is never boring.
Yeah English history is one of my favorite
True
But it is bloody confusing.
@@phann860 don't read GoT then 😂

Fun fact: Game of Thrones was based on these wars
Aegon's Conquest=William's Invasion
The Dance of the Dragons=The Anarchy
Lancasters=lannisters (mainly just in similar names)

Well it was in the interest of the Kings of France to provide a safe haven to divide England at the time.
Crazy watching this stuff after watching so many game of thrones history videos.
This is the history behind game of thrones.

The way you describe the rise and fall of power dynamics is intriguing. You're truly a master storyteller!
I had not heard of the role of the d'Medici before. Fascinating.
Love the Plantagenets. Shame they were their own worst enemies
Edward III had so many kids & when the Black Prince died, things went haywire.
By plunging the country in multiple civil wars I’d say they lost their right to rule
Britain's Greatest Dynasty
Waited for this video ❤❤❤

There is no such thing as Dukedom, it's between these: Duchies, Lordships, Counties, Vassals, Principalities, Fiefdoms or Barons.
@ Absolutely correct, I should’ve said Duchy 👍
@JJSUXJK the title is referred to as a dukedom. A Duchy is the lands attached to the title
Yawn
@@beachboy13600 Probably what was said at the nativity of your birth but okay
From what I have learned it seems war was common between all neighbors for recorded history. The stakes are so much higher now.
Really really well made video!!
History of Britain is fascinating. Just saying.
You're funny😂😂
Depends if you have to spend years studying it at school or get to choose to watch informative, relatively short videos like this.
Good job on this one!
It is like a drawn out version of East Enders, your most dangerous foes are your own relatives.
Far too over simplified, the maps misleading, and quite a few inaccuracies
That's wrong. There was a previous Duke of Lancaster, his father-in-law. The ducal numbers just restarted.
me working to my history exam in my dreams after 11 hours straight hoi4 campaign;
You should try to do one of the world wars next even though that will be hard, but just an idea
We already have 7 videos about it, they are available in the "World War II" playlist
@ ok thanks
Why are there mountains in Kent?
Cliffs of dover
You should have stated at the end that the war of the roses came to a conclusion through Tudor's marriage, combining the 2 houses/2 rosees

Same here. That's why i stopped watching half way through.

Take a shot everytime this guy mispronounces Lancaster and you’ll die of alcohol poisoning
3/4 of Lancaster can’t speak English anyway pal. Urdu, Arabic, Punjabi & Chav are today’s language.
Ey up duck.
So this was like a prior English civil war
One of many, remember the Barons war and whole mess with Matilda and Stephen.
This was one of many - England had been engulfed in ci il wars throughout its history.
The one we call the Civil War was merely the most recent.

The Mad French king was Charles VI not Charles VII.
Although it is an apt moniker for pretty much all of them 😊

How is this the first time I’ve heard Shakespeare made up the red rose?

The basis for Game of Thrones.
Funny how its called an English civil war but in the end Wales won
I'm here for the Game of Thrones comments
Bruh york and Lancaster are from the same family wth

You can do anything with enough time and enough cousins.

I wonder what William the bastard would have done with all of them?
Cool British blooded history

Simply saying it a family feud total mess up. Family dysfunction
Now we need the Anarchy and the Angevins.
No that is last thing us proles want.

To be fair, this is the history on which Game of Thrones was built.

Beaufort sounds ok to me. And Towton is a difficult pronounciation that is easily mistaken - we still know what he means.
