    Hey Brandon... I have been couped up for my days off and the Holiday due to a giant snow storm and typical associated closures. Today I was having some delightful morning coffee cocktails and became very frustrated with an electronics connectivity problem that was about to make me lose my mind. I decided to take a break and see what premiers I have notifications for today. This piece took me back to a peaceful state and I thank for it. I'm sorry for rambling but as always, you are amazing! I hope you enjoy your holiday season.

    HI Brandon. lovely playing as always. Sorry for a technical question, but what's the scale length of your theorbo? I recently hired one modelled after Buchenberg that's 93 cm/169 cm. It sounded great but, to be honest, it was giving me back problems because it requires me to hold my left hand quite high over my shoulder at all times. Yours seems like a more ideal size, still sounding great but not too uncomfortable to hold.

    Very nice! Do finger nails generally help to produce a better sound on instruments like lute and theorbo? I am asking because most of the flute players i have seen they play with their fingers.

    • @brandonacker
      @brandonacker  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks! Historically theorbo players definitely used nails. But like today, some did and some didn't.
      After 1600ish nails were used because they helped with projection and were especially useful for playing chamber music and opera. In the Renaissance there are many sources that say the sound is better with flesh.
      Rather than better or worse I would say they are different sounds. Though with nails its louder.

    Hey Mr. Acker! I'm learning the lute. I'm thinking about moving away from the renascentist repertoire and delving into the baroque. What do you recomend? Buying a theorbo or an archlute? Also, I have small hands; do you think it can restrain my progress on the theorbo? Thank you very much!

    • @brandonacker
      @brandonacker  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Lucas, well you could do baroque lute or archlute which are both much bigger than a renaissance lute but manageable. Another idea is to get a small theorbo which isn't too hard to find these days. If you get a French theorbo around 76cm its really not that strenuous but its like going from guitar to bass so its quite the change.
      Are you looking to play in ensembles? Then you need to play continuo so yes archlute or theorbo but if you are just playing solo, baroque lute has some of the best repertoire.
      Hard choice to only go with one which is why I have all of them haha good luck and feel free to write for more advice at brandonackerguitar@gmail.com

    • @lucasletierifranca7217
      @lucasletierifranca7217 2 роки тому

      @@brandonacker thank you for the answer! I'm really not sure. I'll probably go to the baroque lute then! I would be thrilled if it was possible to play all the solo repertoire in only one instrument, but I do feel that I'll have to choose. These french theorbos are the so called theorbinos? Maybe they are also what I'm looking for. Thank you very much! I'm your fan

    I play all types of guitar. Electric, classical, bass, ect. I want to learn how to play this thing so bad. Lute and theorbo have always been on my list of instruments to learn. Are there no songs with strumming parts for theorbo? I imagine that would be like trying to strum on a 5 string bass. It can be done but it's not what the instrument excels at. Am I right about that?

    • @brandonacker
      @brandonacker  2 роки тому +5

      I think you said it correctly at the end. Strumming is just not what the instrument does best. You can do it and there are a few historical examples but the Baroque guitar is the right tool for strumming. Often I show up to a Baroque concert with a theorbo and guitar. I pull out the theorbo for playing a good bass line and a guitar for strummy dances.
