Dominique's a great guy and a wonderful host. When I visited him in Auvers he snapped off a small sprig of the ivy on Van Gogh's grave and gave it to me. I carried it with me through four more countries, taking care of it, and now, more than a year later, it's healthy and growing in a pot in my bedroom. A bit of Van Gogh's resting place here in Toronto.

Thanks, we can off course only agree. Auvers is blessed to have such a caring and inspiring care-taker of Vincent's heritage.

It disturbs me that so many people believe that Vincent committed suicide. I don't believe he did. I believe that Rene Secretan shot Vincent whether by accident or on purpose. Rene tormented Vincent mercilessly every chance he got. He was fascinated with western cowboys and even dressed in that fashion. Witnesses claim that Rene got his hands on a pistol and carried it around like a cowboy. He most likely saw Vincent painting in a farmer's field, began harassing Vincent and brandished the gun shooting him. Vincent's painting supplies were never found but an old rusty pistol was found many years later when a farmer was plowing the field. It isn't known if it was the same pistol Rene had.
In Vincent's coat pocket, Theo found a letter that Vincent had drafted to him. In the letter Vincent placed an order for paint supplies and wrote about feeling hopeful about his work. Why would Vincent order supplies if he was going to kill himself? Also, why would he shoot himself in the upper body instead of shooting himself in the head or the heart? There are too many things that point to Rene shooting Vincent. The night after the shooting, Rene Secretan's family suddenly left Auvers and headed back to Paris. Why would they do that in the middle of the night? Secretan admitted much later on in his life that he tormented Vincent but he never admitted to shooting Vincent. I feel that if he did admit it, this sort of thing would certainly put a black mark on the Secretan name.
Either way, the world lost Vincent too soon but he gave us all he could. Vincent wanted the world to see what HE saw. Beauty.

Totally agree. Thank you. Though I would add that maybe VgV already had a death wish because why didn't he seek treatment once he had been shot? He could still possibly have been saved. I know he did not want to get Secretan in trouble' but still . . .

This is ERRONEOUS information. VgV did NOT knowingly commit suicide. Further research now has shown that the teenager Rene Secretan shot VgV; but VgV decided not to hide the fact and did not seek treatment for the wound. SOmeone should tell this Dominique person and the Church that they are wrong.
