- “’Auvers is very beautiful, really profoundly beautiful” wrote Vincent van Gogh to his brother Theo, and his stay there in the final days of his life proved to be enormously productive. In his seventy days in Auvers, van Gogh would paint seventy or so canvases, including the masterwork Fleurs dans un verre. Intricately rendered, this vibrant canvas represents one of the few still life paintings executed during this period and will be a highlight of Sotheby’s Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale in New York.

Just like me...
van Gogh only sold one painting during his career. However, other prominent artist of the time were well aware of Vincent's immense talent.
Underrated or great undiscovered artists are not as rare as we think.

The frame completely overwhelms this beautiful serene work. It needs a much less elaborate frame to complement it. Finally, someone of Van Gogh's stature doesn't need all that decorative gold gilt to sell his art. It stands on its own merit.
The frame is most likely original...very different time in late 19th century. For me, the frame is part of the painting and both should remain as one. Love van Gogh's work!
You need to look at it from an eye of the time, and not a modern eye. The frame is appropriate and in no way should be changed. I think it's beautiful.
Stephanie Lehrer I absolutely agree. This is the wrong frame for this painting. It's so obviously too large & too ornate. Maybe they're appealing to a v wealthy moron who's interested in buying status. Just my guess.
@@nancyblum12 you should probably blame Johanna van Gogh-Bonger (Theo's wife) as she was probably the person that picked the frame 120 years ago.
@@ceasewatercolorarts I’ve seen a photo of Johanna sitting in her living room beneath several Van Gogh paintings & all have the simplest wooden frames. If she did in fact choose this frame, I suspect her motivation was to appeal to a v wealthy person.

I wish I could get inexpensive good reproductions. The colors impressionists used are so intense in person. Wild and almost florescent. Chicago displays them incomparably. I wish I could reproduce that experience at home.

An artist has two lives: His own life and his artistic life. They are independent of each other. So he could have felt sadness in his personal life and also expressed joy in his artistic life.
Well it really comes down to feeling so much. To feel such intense joy one is going to feel intense pain.

His Drawings exceptional Sensible
I think this is HIGHLY suspicious if i am correct about the following: The flower on the left is a Cattleya mossiae with a droopy dorsal sepal which is extremely common in mossiae as is that fall forward shape of the lateral petals and would have cost hundreds of pounds back then, which was out of the reach of anyone not wealthy enough to send men to the jungles of South America and money to build glasshouses on railroad tracks to move them around seasonally. Also the nettle is not a nettle, its a coleus. In other words, if you're not a BIG industrialist or HIGH aristocracy, you weren't owning any Cattleyas at the time this work is said to have been painted.

Also where did the title come from? I have serious doubts about that morning glory, which..you can secondguess my cattleya ID, but the vine, heart shaped leaves, and large trumpet shaped flowers is definitely morning glory, not bindweed, and thats a south American species, so its not a wildflower native to France. Lots of questions.
Also is the wheat at that stage of maturity at the same time of year when this was reportedly painted and at that stage of growth when those other things bloom? And what could those red flowers be?
I'm just guessing, but I think the red flower might be something called a Cyprus Vine.
It's important to note there are valid reasons to believe he was killed (even if accidentally), rather than committing suicide. I'd suggest anyone interested in this Google it.
I'm of the persuasion he was accidentally killed, for his paintings and words from this period don't seem suicidal.

@@suzanneananicz5866 Yes, there is a belief that he was possibly shot by some boys who had a pistol, and who had been bullying him for some time. He never admitted to it, perhaps to save the boys.
A cat's soft nose I agree. It frustrates me that things are assumed and stated as fact in his life yet no one really knows. There are questions as to whether he was shot by accident and was gracious not to call out the kids that did it. Same goes for his ear if you look into it. There's a great BBC documentary on the truth behind VVGs ear. ✌️
I knew someone who was super excited and optimistic about the future just two hours before he killed himself and he did it in such a way that there would be no rescue and no accidental survival. The way in which he did it was very unusual. Van Gogh had also made previous attempts and a history of self harm though, so I think the probability of him doing it was high.

Also whats with the stroke of blue green that's supposed to be a stem which looks like it was made over paint that had already dried? Thought vincent was a fast painter whos works took a year to dry etc. Where's the provenance before the war? Where's the letter talking about this one and what does the museum say about it?
At times, painting is the only way I feel understand. It's like taking ketamine, while painting I disassociate and everything bad goes away and people can't hurt me.
Lol. I love that Sotheby's shows the Gachet painting that was most likely painted by Gachet himself after Vincent showed him the real one.

What's sad is that artists die as paupers and only then their paintings are appreciated in price. If only Van Gogh got his works worth during his lifetime then he would have lived a happy life as well instead of ending in tragedy.

Yet what a legacy that Jo, Theo's wife, was willing to promote and advocate for Vincent after his death (and soon after, Theo's) ,for both of their memories. Her son, namesakes Vincent, probably influenced this too. Thankfully she was willing to continue his promotion so we, now, are able to enjoy his work. Yes, painful for Vincent to not have known his impression on this world, but sometime art transcends time. He wouldn't have been Vincent without the life he had.
@@karenpaxton he felt utter helplessness at not being able to sustain himself monetarily. Felt embarrassed about being a financial burden on his brother. I don't think this qualifies as any positive attribute that makes him who he was.. Lets keep aside our philosophical indulgence in the sad life of the artist..I wish he could have led a happier and content life had his work been appreciated in his lifetime by people or associations who could.
Vincent was not about money. He did not want to be wealthy, he wanted to be appreciated and loved by his peers, towards the end of his life he was beginning to be recognised and his fellow artists had organised an exhibition of his work, he would have been happy about that and had good reason to be optimistic.
He did not shoot himself in a fit of depression, he was shot accidentally by two small boys playing with a gun, one of them confessed on his deathbed.

Its pure advertising. See my 3 other comments and I think you will understand why they have to show it like a car commercial from exciting angles with pretty music. Also there is no provenance before the war according to this video and suddenly the Oppenheimers have it? The same kind of people who would not have bought a van gogh when he was alive? Do you get where I am going with this? There isno letter about this painting, either or southebys would have definitely mentioned that fact because that would add a couple tens of millions to the price tag.
@@indoororchidsandtropicals358 yeah. It is deeply perverted. He originally intended to be a priest. All of his work brought him intentionally into contact with the lower classes of society, peasants, hard working people, miners.
He would spit on the rich bastards making millions out of his suffering. The sad truth is the same story continues with many artists, but those vultures are making their empire out of exactly this - another one suffering.
Sorry to say, but this is definitely not the strongest work of van Gogh. He left his own scheme of composition that he had developed so meticulously in other works of his later period, and that didn’t work out. In his better works he managed to break through to a “deep structure” that holds together the whole picture, but in this case, he didn’t arrive.
This painting is not showing happiness. It shows resilience at its end.
