    My first thought on turning the zipper stop was "skive it!"...but then I realized that's a bit advanced for this video... Really enjoying these how-to's. No matter your skill level, there's always something to learn. :)

    • @iLoveLeatherNYC
      @iLoveLeatherNYC  5 років тому +1

      Awwhhh yes the skiver! You are right it makes a major difference. I wish there was one that was automated (that I could recommend, not too expensive, around $200) but have not come across it. I went industrial and agree its a must have if doing heavy weight leather.

    After making a couple fold over clutches, I ran across this video. I really wanted to start working with leather but it wasn't cost effective right then so I drafted a pattern but didn't do anything with it for a couple months. Today I revisited the pattern and decided to draft a larger one and use some outdoor camo fabric (that's what my sister wanted). I'm about halfway through and must say thank you in advance for setting me up for success with your video. Zippers sometimes give me the blues but I haven't had much success using Heatnbond so I didn't use the drop in method. I email pic when I finished.

    • @iLoveLeatherNYC
      @iLoveLeatherNYC  7 років тому +2

      Hi. First I LOVE camo so can't wait to see how yours turned out. Heat and Bond can be tricky, it's basically iron on glue (my goal is give people options and work arounds if you are sewing with leather).
      My hope is this - - you will master this project and have confidence so when I trot out the next level (cuz its coming) you'll be like: Listen B I can make that! Bring it on. And I hope your sister is happy with what you made for her.

    My mind has been blown! Watching this makes me believe that I can make my own leather bag because you made it look simple and showed that you don't need some sort of industrial sewing machine and equipment to do it. And it's funny because my dad was a furrier and then worked in the leather trade many years ago so I feel like I am coming full circle back to my childhood. Excited that I can pick his brains (and maybe his contacts!!) for some leather tips! This video was fantastic. New subscriber here and I shall be trawling through your other videos. Thank you.

    • @iLoveLeatherNYC
      @iLoveLeatherNYC  5 років тому

      @Tonia Kelly Hi there. Sounds like you know how to sew already...if that's the case then you are THIS close to being able to make a leather bag. Your father is probably thrilled you want to get some tips from him, soak them up every chance you get! You don't need an industrial BUT if you can get your hands on a used one (no need to buy new, Dad might be able to pull some strings) then you will be cooking with gas. My hope is that everyone that tries my tutorials get great results, so I hope the same for you.

    Excellent tutorial and thank you for including the measurements and supply link. Am thinking if one wanted to convert it into a wrislet version they could also do it plus perhaps add a magnetic closure to keep the flap in place. Am definitely going to try it plus add a zippered pocket to its lining.

      I know how you feel! Leather can be tricky. Do this to ease your anxiety. Make a denim version first. Denim is inexpensive but rigid and forces you to sew accurately. By a yard of it and make several (give them as gifs or use them for cosmetics) when you can sew it flawlessly you are ready for leather. Also see video for best tools + tips and tricks. You must START strong (cutting straight and really good pattern) to finish STRONG.

    Thank you! I love this clutch. If I wanted to make it into a cross body bag, how would I add the strap?

    • @iLoveLeatherNYC
      @iLoveLeatherNYC  8 років тому +2

      I would add large grommets to the front/back at each side, just below where it naturally folds and place these close to the edge. Next I would make a long strap and add spring clips to each end. The spring clips can be attached to the grommets, hope that makes sense. If not please email me and I can explain further.

    • @TheKdzy

    • @iLoveLeatherNYC
      @iLoveLeatherNYC  8 років тому

      Super! Just make sure you measure the total distance / opening of the spring clip, this will determine how far away to place the grommet.

    • @iLoveLeatherNYC

      I used the highest temperature my iron would allow. Caution tho, my zipper was metal so that heated up as well. Do you have a hot glue gun? You can use that instead, does the same thing.

    quick question about the lining, So u don't have to sew the lining in the clutch? How long will it last before the lining come apart?

    • @iLoveLeatherNYC
      @iLoveLeatherNYC  8 років тому +1

      No you don't have to sew it, use the heat and bond. If you are concerned then carefully go over it again, walk the machine slowly over previous stitches and sew it from the top side. Or if you want fast and gangster go for hot glue or E6000.

    • @iLoveLeatherNYC

      Initially no. Sew first, then glue in the lining. I did go back and sew it (I traced over the top stitching), but I can do that because I use an industrial sewing machine and it can sew through all the layers - - if you have a home set up, it may not have the power to do it.

    Hi. Very beautiful bag. Am new at making bags but this one is a must try. Just a quick question I was going through the pattern length. Is it 112/4 + 5inches for the flap or the flap is included in the 111/4 inc measurements?

    • @iLoveLeatherNYC
      @iLoveLeatherNYC  5 років тому

      Hi. Hope this helps. The TOTAL dimension on the left side (includes the fold over) = 11.25" , the TOTAL dimension on right side (includes fold over) = 8.50", the width at the bottom = 11.25". Connect all the lines. Now to this to add your seam allowance. I normally use .375, but do what's best for you. The 5" fold over is to give you an idea of how much it should be. How's that?

      I use several kinds of industrial machines for the leather goods I sew (Juki, Seiko, Tuff Sew) they all serve a different purpose. Check local suppliers (they are heavy to ship) then Ebay, Craig's list for a used model. It need not be brand new to do a good job bypass ones that do fancy stitches. Most important is being able to sew thru several thick layers of leather easily a machine with a "walking foot" will do that. Hope that helps.

    • @iLoveLeatherNYC
      @iLoveLeatherNYC  7 років тому +1

      Silk. The print was to die for and I had to have it, HOWEVER because it is so thin I took an extra step to bond it with a light weight fusible interfacing to give it some more body. The one I use on my projects gives reinforcement but still leaves it soft - - hope that helps.

      @iLoveLeatherNYC  5 років тому +1

      I buy leather from a few different locations but mostly from a place in New York called Global Leather. In terms of machines I have an industrial Juki, but if you use a soft leather or one that is not too thick you can make this bag with a regular machine, just be sure to use the correct kind of needle. This bag can also be sewn by hand.

    • @rhondaverma6358
      @rhondaverma6358 5 років тому

      Let me tell you! I really want to learn how to do this. I made the pattern like you did and was trying all weekend to do this on my machine, but my stitches on the bottom were all tangled up in knots. I ripped everything out and will try again, but I’m trying to figure out why my thread was all bunched up.
      LOVE YOUR VIDEO! I’ve already picked out what leather I’m going to use as soon as I really figure out how to do this.

    • @iLoveLeatherNYC
      @iLoveLeatherNYC  5 років тому +1

      @@rhondaverma6358 Yikes. First and foremost are you using the correct sewing machine needle? This comes in a special package marked for "leather" these have a diamond point. Second you may have to lengthen your stitch. Also your leather may be too thick. Try sewing one layer, if you can do that then TWO may be too much for your machine. Please don't ruin your machine by pushing it beyond its limits...if all these things fail? Sew by hand.

    Listed is 1/4 yd fabric for lining.....
    Pattern shows as....11 1/2” by 8 1/2”
    Using any standard width fabric.....36” 45” 54”.....
    Shouldn’t it be 1/3 yd of lining for pattern piece to fit?
