  • Always 'fly the aeroplane' first and foremost.
In this episode, I visit a very moving event at Newcastle Airfield, just south of Dublin in Ireland.

Brought me to tears - your comment at about 12 minutes saying that there’s no judgement and funny looks. As a dad to a 4 year old autistic Son, we’re now starting to see the looks people give, not always from a negative place, but sometimes so. The way children look at him, purely being inquisitive, but an event like this means so so much to families with additional needs because of precisely that - no judgement or funny looks.
Please, someone take Jon up on his plea to organise something similar in the UK. We’ll be the first to sign up.

Making a flying day for those of us that are uniquely-abled or under privileged, is about the most rewarding exercises I have ever been part of. It is so wonderful to give folks a reprieve from the normal. I flew one young guy 2 years in a row. His parents told me that he was literally counting down the days to the next trip to the airport. In conversation with my friend, he recalled every stinkin' detail of the prior year's flight. He now is an avid model builder, and knows everything about GA planes. Whether it is a fishing trip, a trip to the race track, or a visit to the animal shelter, the whole family improves their togetherness with experiences like these. I've introduced plenty of non-aviators to an aviation career, but to introduce someone with no experience or access to airplanes like we take for granted, is more rewarding that I can explain in words.
It is worth it, definitely, to organize these events. Once established, they take on their own momentum of growth. By any measure, they are always a success.
From the States, I hope the Sky Gods can help build these events over there!

Sometimes you just can’t legislate for all eventualities. Three weeks ago I picked up my great nephew from Blackbush -what a great airport! It was IMC almost all the way back at 5000’ and a little uncomfortable. I elected for the RNAV approach for Rwy23 at Cambridge and had just become established on the final approach track when young Harry told me he was going to be imminently sick. Fortunately, the auto pilot was fully coupled and I had a bag to hand in the back of his seat. With a second to spare he managed to use the bag. On the return flight we pre-empted with an open sick bag to hand - lo and behold he didn’t need it. Lesson learned.
    Thank goodness for a/p!

What an excellent video. Hats off to the organizers of that very worthy event, i`m sure that something like that would go down a storm in the UK and it`s a family event where mum & dad can get involved as well as other family members too. Amazing 👍👍

Years ago when I was based at White Waltham, they had a young fliers day and I had the privilege of taking 6 of them up in a Warrior. No idea if they still do it, but I do hope so...

Lovely GA community giving back thing to do💜✌️😊👍 Health and ability are things that so many take for granted - the WIS&D (Wounded, Injured, Sick and Disabled) have had and are having a rough time, so do their families and carers an event like this looks like wonderful respite and very inspirational 💜✌️😊👍

Hello John ! Wonderful day there in Ireland for those kids. Unfortunately the strong windfactor cancelled the flight. Hopefully next year again with a high pressure zone above Weston airfield. We used to have a yearly event in Antwerpen airport called Jeugd & Luchtvaart (youth & airspace), with many different planes taking part and flying all kinds of kids with disabillities, all free of charge. Because of many protesters living close to the airport, also this falbulous event for kids was banned from the activity calendar. Thank you for your support to these events, and you brought it wonderfully on you tube, as always ! Kind regards from Jan & Anne-Marie - EBAW !

I’m delighted to see that you got to fly in my native Ireland, as my home village of Dunshaughlin is a VRP for approaches to Weston and when RWY 10 is active at Dublin we get to see the arrivals coming in over the village - here in Manchester, we see the arrivals from the West using the M60 as part of the approach into Manchester RWY 24 but I’d love to join you on one of these fun hops across the Irish Sea in the PA 28 🇮🇪☘️🇬🇧❤️

What a great day out for the children , one of my memorable times was going on a challenging behaviour course and opened my eyes and now understand a lot more , because it was run by an Autistic person , who could not speak normally . Some thing that should be taught at school to open young peoples eyes . Such a nice video . 👍

I believe such like events, although much smaller, have taken place at various venues sporadically in the UK, Jon. But it would be good to make such a happy event permanent and with every chance to grow overtime into something spectacular. Well done for highlighting this wonderful event 👏👏👏

My wife used to organise an event similar to this every year at Exeter Airport during her time at Children's Hospice South West, where local pilots would donate their time and planes to take children with life limiting conditions flying around Devon. It was based in a huge hanger with live music, childrens entertainment, food and fun. The fire brigade got involved too. Since she left it hasnt happened again. She is a Children's Community Nurse now, looking after children in similar circumstances but in their own homes. I wonder if she would be interested in helping organise something again? I could only ask? She would need assistance though

At 2:30, you appear to pull the throttle back a little after you confirmed good power set, on the t/o roll. What was the purpose of the small reduction in t/o power?

On the visor, have the rubber clips started breaking down leaving a sticky goo on the visor? Knots 2 U in the US have a PMA replacement for about $15.
