This is a great list! I especially agree with going to the local hobby store and ask questions first. Nothing worse than building a car and then find out there’s no where to run it as intended.

My favourite part of the hobby is building shelf queesns. I do have a couple of cars I do run though. I bought a used Top Force Evo for this purpose.

My RC addiction is just beginning so I’ve been buying RTR models to skip the time required to build a kit. I’ve got a basher, a crawler, and a short course truck so I have a good variety to keep me entertained now. Next I want to buy a kit so that I get higher quality parts in the kit and I can modify it as I build it rather than having to take it apart to modify it later. I’m a lifelong car guy with decades of mechanical building experience so it shouldn’t be hard.

For me I’m more into kits as I find it a bit therapeutic. My issue is that I find that I’m not really into them being shelf queens or better clarifying I don’t like having a lot of them as I feel better if I run them. I was into crawlers but couldn’t make it to the comps so I went back to vintage and re-re buggies. I’m now wanting back into the crawlers because I need the community aspect. The guys around here are really active. I really wish the dirt track around here would start a vintage class so I could try that

I tend to recommend 2wd to kids and the, um, " less coordinated" of adults since most crashes are head on to something. Less to destroy and fix.

The hobby is changing, i use generic gearboxes and parts from team assoc or chinese copies of... make a chassis plate out of alloy or resin print one. I buy the bodies and wheels i want, as all the platforms out there are deliberately convoluted and annoying.. Since i did this the cost of the hobby now goes on cool things like my boxford cnc machine. The RC companies won't be getting my money anymore other than the parts i buy to build the platform i want. Happy to show ant tell.

"set a limit and stick to it" sounds like advise that will get you to not have an RC hobby VERY quickly. Because you'll budget your stuff, get it, drive it and then some part will break. End of hobby because fixing it would be overbudget. And/or you find that driving for 10min and then going home and waiting for the battery to charge for an hour doesn't work for you, but buying a second battery would send you over budget, so you stop because the faff isn't worth it for 10min of fun. And so on and so forth.
I personally think that having a ballpark figure in mind is good or essential even, because it'll give you an idea of what sort of bracket you fit into so to speak, but it would be smarter to think of it in terms of how much per some set period of time do you have to spend on it. When you have a ballpark figure, look for a car+controller+battery+charger+furry dice combination that is between 50 and 70% of your figure and go for that. If you hate it, you spent less than you were prepared to, so it's less of a big deal. If you love it, you still have room in your budget to replace whatever breaks the first couple of times hopefully, and maybe get another battery pack. BUT it may well be that you find that some aspect of your car isn't up to snuff and you want to upgrade it, or you need another extra pack, or some other random thing. If so, do not stick to your budget since doing so will mean you just p*ssed away your budget and got next to nothing in return.
    ---
Kit VS RTR is not just the abilities, it's also money. Kits are a LOT more expensive to start with because they cost more, but more so the tools and other things needed to go from a kit in a box to a working RC car cost a bunch of money in stuff that is not "in the car".

I think yout 1st point location is very important. I now work and live in Asia and its not the same as Australia where we have BMX tracks, skateparks and too much land available. I love nitro but its a bit loud and some dont understand so it can be a challenge. Back hime if Karen rang the cops they cops would say we have to 11.59pm, here the security or police dont understand its a hobby and not a crime.

I’m a year into RC. I started watching the build of the mk2 escort and I’m dumbfounded that a year on my son and I have a metric crap ton of cars. Building my kits really helped me to get my head around repairs. We live in Australia and don’t have a local club. We drive in a school gym so acceleration is key and we often hear cars down as going 80km/h is no good when you hit a wall.

1 do not get a tamiya tt series as first kit, it may become a money pit (between paint, ball bearing, decent servo, shocks, adjustjng the steering making it less sloppy and brushless system the whole kit will become almost worth half than the electronics needed)
2 go for rtr cheap mini bashers and get good information about ups ans downs of it, having bought multiple of them the hbx is the best investment considering most come with oil shock, bulletproof decent bruahless system and decent servo.
3 SOME big brands have some cheap alternative that come fully loaded with quality parts, do not miss them

  • @dannyseville2543
    @dannyseville2543 10 годин тому

Probably more a comment than a question....
Get familiar with the parts on the kits you buy. Some are available outside of the hobby for much cheaper prices. Things like bearings and screws are the one i found have the highest 'hobby tax'. This is more so if you think you are going to build several kits. How many of us started with 'just the one kit' and now have a wall full of them? 😂

How do you know you don't like building an RC until you have tried it? That said, yes if you have ZERO experience fixing, holding a screwdriver or you have never done a single bit of DIY in your life, an RTR can be a good way to go. Well, until you break it and then you're stuffed as you can't fix it at all and then you will find yourself driving to your local RC store to pay them to fix it for you. That is a shame as RC cars are a simple device and just by spending a bit of time with the manual, you can work on them without too much trouble. If you have some comment sense, you are good to go so don't sell yourself short. :)

I always love RC cars since I was a little, but it's not easy to carry all my toys around whenever I move to a new place. 😢
