  • Pierre-Auguste Renoir is inseparable from the Impressionist movement. The Impressionist method distinctly shaped Renoir’s art and Renoir made a unique contribution to the Impressionist movement. This video compares paintings by Renoir and his fellow Impressionist Claude Monet of the same motif.
In the summer of 1869 Renoir and Monet set up their easels side-by-side on the bank of the river. The similarities of Renoir and Monet’s paintings make their notable differences instructive.
For Monet, Impressionism was a project of painting in which the observed motif was translated into individualized brush marks that fragmented the pictorial image.
For Renoir, this visual method of pure color applied in bold marks was a technique that facilitated his capturing the vibrancy of modern life, specifically the composition of modern social life.
