I managed to get this with a half price yellow sticker on Monday. Very nice beef but the flavours weren’t “popping”. Chopped some fresh coriander and a scotch bonnet and threw it in - what a difference!
Low and slow and you have to start with beef with a decent fat content. Shin, brisket or chuck all make for melt in the mouth. The worst thing for stewing (ironically) is the packs of stewing beef you get in the supermarket. It is usually so lean it dries out super easy and tastes of bugger all.
A proper goan vindaloo does not necessarily have to be flaming hot, however it must contain lots of garlic and vinegar. It is Portuguese in origin, made popular by the merchants arriving in Goa, combining wine vinegar (vinho) and garlic (alho). The British Indian Restaurant (BIR) version for some reason adds potatoes (aloo), this is not true to the goan original.
I suspect, with many of our curry houses being Muslim-owned, that goes some way towards explaining why it’s evolved into being more of a chicken, lamb, or prawn dish.
That looks amazing, the thing I find with slow cooking Currys is that I always let it cool off once finished cooking and have next day. Let all those flavours torment and beef just breaks off.
Thanks Simon, Goan to give this a try for definite , described like a vintage wine. Might be a little spicy for her indoors, but more for me Cheers for the content.
Had this myself as a meal for one just with nan bread. If you added rice it could be a meal for two easily. I can't get a good takeaway Indian main dish for anything close to this in London. You can get bad low meat lots of sauce dish for £8-£9 but those are just bad. Asda's Bah range is ok to but those can't be frozen. So I always check for the yellow stickers on the M&S ones when I pass them.
These ready meals are better value and taste nicer than going to a chain pub to eat, they definitley have a place. With a ten, I'll have a look for it, M&S still take things to the next level, compared to other supermarkets..
It might be time to sample the niche taste of laverbread with beer and such specialities like Cymraeg Welshrarebit (without any jokes) to add to the accomplishments. Were you in the Catering Corps Si? lol
We're only one or two years away from their 400g curries being a tenner apiece. Utterly ludicrous pricing. My branch is yards away from an Aldi which only makes Marks' prices look even more comical.
But Aldi's curry's are awful with very poor ingredients. The are cheap for a reason, most people have taste buds that can tell the difference even if they choose to eat the junk.
@@seana2646 Aldi recently did a limited edition range of gourmet curries around Halloween which were as good as anything from Marks or Waitrose but at nearly half the price.
Yeah, but if you work for the suppliers and producers you quickly come to realise that there are two tiers in food production for supermarkets; M&S, Waitrose and Booths in tier one and everyone else in tier two. The first three have dedicated lines and sites producing their own brand and everyone else shares the rest, just the label being changed depending on the day. So for instance M&S will insist that a producer/supplier does not supply any other customer in case of corners being cut and so on. They will insist on unnecessarily (imho) levels of food hygiene which means the suppliers have to employ roughly 20% more staff who spend all shifts making sure the workers don't touch their face, always go through the foot baths and so on. All of this costs a pretty penny and M&S are often the only shop who have staff turning up every day or week to make sure of it. They also spend considerably more on ingredients ( and do the same checks on suppliers/ farmers wherever in the world). So I think their products are actually good value. Alas I can't afford to shop in these places so I go to Aldi etc. I've worked on their lines as well and can tell you they're adequate and all the same; they share the same lines so whether you buy it in Aldi or Tesco it's exactly the same product and only the profit margin alters. The only exception to this rule is Morrisons who, like the tier ones insist on having dedicated suppliers. The difference is their own brand products are indifferent imho, I suppose they don't pay like the tier ones. In my town we have Lidl, Morrisons, Tesco and Marks and Spencer; I shop at Lidl and I'm very happy with their stuff, if I came into money I would desert them for M&S
@@SteveDonaldson-r5k Good reply & right. I spend a few years working at M&S within the supply chain. I know the reality of what food costs, how its made & that you can taste what you pay for. Cheap food is not the same as higher priced food. M&S is not making loads more profit while offering the same food. The only people who can't taste quality I assume have never had it & have taste buds that would enjoy cardboard.
Depends how active you are, if you’re someone like Simon who burns 6000 calories a day sheerly by talking utter guff all day into a camera you’ll be fine
If that came from Goan, I will eat my Goat... Used to always buy M&S Goan Fish Curry which had Coconut Sauces....I reckon you need to GO On and On... Groan

The waitrose kerelan chicken fry is delicious..

Also, the original Goan vindaloo contains pork, right?

use a mix of ox cheek and beef shin. Flavour and mouth feel, pressure cook to acheive soft meat that cuts with a spoon

I’ve had that last weekend it’s gorgeous I’d give it a 10/10 Simon. Great review you were spot on x
Gonna Go An get one of these to try. Be nice with one of those big naans the supermarkets sell. Ta Si for the great video review 💪🏻🍻☃️

love marks and spencers, excellent video as always
Good, honest review.
got a chicken madras from home bargains last week - surprisingly edible
That looks bloody good
Will try this for the price it's on a par to my local takeout.
If I don't like it the bin will i'm sure
That’s my Friday night sorted 👍🏻
When M&S get it right they get it very right. Sadly a lot of their standard fair is slipping in quality.

It's a meal for two, it's not. For the amount of meat and quality it seems on the mark. Probably best you just stick to cheapo ones 👍🏻
great video si, hope you enjoy seating on the toilet 🚽🤣🤣10 out of 10, great stuff 🍻🏴😎👍
Why in the Lord’s name are you not having that curry with a top quality beer??
Ground babies?
They are curry leaves Simon 👍🏴
BOOM!
We all know this ain’t a 2 person serve aha
Asda much better, two mains two sides £10
hahaha asda better food than marks, not a chance
@ the Bom Bahia curry much better!
Were the Hungarians as unfriendly as per usual to British people? 🙂
Not enough for 2 people, does look good though
That's how they make you buy two of them. Its a classic trick!
It is a perfectly adequate portion for 2 with rice.
Most people have zero idea of portion control now, hence we as a nation are all so fat.
On it's own yep. I find if you pair it with the M&S Jewelled Pilau Rice (which is excellent) it'll serve two easily
@@davidk7262 I'd eat one of these as a snack
