I love how non judgemental you are!! Some chicken people are very critical towards anyone that doesn't raise chickens the way that they do. I don't use light in the winter either, but other people have reasons why they do, and you don't make them feel bad for it. You are so encouraging! You're my favorite backyard chicken educator!🤗❤️🐔🐥🐓

Good morning! Yes raining down here in the valley also. I haven't had eggs for months, months. I have one Buffy and an Old English game fowl left in my flock. Others have passed from old age. All of my flock are orphans and I have no idea how old these girls are but it's all okay! They are my girls! I spoil them rotten eggs or no eggs!

I bought heritage birds on purpose because of this. They just are healthier and live like ten years. Also feed a bit of meat too. The feed stores are making the feed cheaply. It used to have fish meal in it.

Little BubbleButt is a darling! I'm heartened to hear how old she got. My homebound lifestyle with my birds has winnowed down my pool of friends to give eggs to. Even though I only have three layers, the egg bowl in my kitchen is always brimming. Little Squatch had an infection in her egger last year--the vet took an x-ray and found no problems, but she hasn't laid an egg in a year. I'm fine with that--I keep my birds to soothe my mind, not to make me henfruit. My neighbor got four hens though they don't eat eggs much, so our corner of the neighborhood will be positively lousy with freakin' eggs!

I have a TON of eggs- I have 3 Easter Eggers and 1 Speckled Sussex and I get from 2-4 eggs day now! It's SO egg-citing! They are starting a small molt- not a lot though. But it's like they are competing with each other and in and out of the coop all day!! I know, I expect them to slow down soon-with winter coming on- but I am in the hay days of new layers!! And I am celebrating! WOOT!

It helps to conserve extra eggs in a solution during spring through early summer when you have a surplus, so that when fall/winter come around you can eat the extra eggs from earlier in the year.

Your video came at a great time, thank you! We have 5 australorps that we got back in April....still no eggs. We are in IL. First time having chickens and my husband and I are puzzled. They have a secure run in our backyard with plenty of room, and no one appears to be ill. Very active, etc. So any tips appreciated!
Edit: they are on an organic feed and my husband just started giving them scratch as well. They also get garden scraps.

Sometimes high production breeds will lay right through their molt. It’s fantastic getting all those eggs but it can wear them out a bit. I would give them a nice multivitamin for chickens and some nutrient dense treats like scrambled eggs or grubs. :)

I think my chicken just need an excuse to stop laying eggs 🤣🤣
The weather got chilly and rainy all of a sudden and they all stopped laying altogether, even though I provide them artificial lighting with a timer for 15 hours a day. I've got three age groups now, five six and seven month olds... The latter were the ones that had just started laying small eggs and they stopped. They also stopped laying for several days following a change of the sawdust underneath. The old one had gotten darker in colour and they did not like the new and pale ground as it seems 🤔... Since my chicken are not free roaming and have no access to insects, during the molting season I give them a few handfuls of trout pellets soaked in water as a treat a couple of times a week, just about a couple of pounds to about 70 chicken and poulets. It contains about 44% proteins and various polypeptides and amino acids, it's just a little support for them to grow healthy feathers faster. It helps. A couple of 20 Kg bags is enough for the whole season for me.

I have a speckled Sussex that I was able to nurse back to health, but now the flock pesters her greatly. She ends up hanging around the back door waiting for me to let her in so she can eat in peace. I'm treating her right eye since one of the roosters pecked at her and this sets her further at dis-ease. She runs free in the barnyard but she stays away from the flock. She does go into the hen house at night, the last one in(first one out). How can I reintergrate her safely? I only have one isolation crate that has a resident with an injured leg. I love your videos.

Molting season always leaves a couple bald birds during freezing temps. Eggs are the least concern. Wish there was way to get them to molt early. It seems like after so many years in the same location their bodies would adjust and molt at a better time.

My poor chicken… I got 2 new birds (Bielefelders) for my young starting to lay flock… one is a fledgling and the other is 1yr…. (First mistake) the older one stopped laying the day I brought her home …. Got picked on terribly by one hen and the rooster… and now is molting. Her only buddy is the fledgling and she won’t free range with the rest of the chickens. When they go out is her only reprieve for her to finally eat and drink. It’s been 2.5 weeks, will she ever integrate and lay eggs again? She just stays in the hen house until the others leave, otherwise she is picked on.

I’ve seen some UA-cam videos addressing soft or no-shell eggs and they found it to be a Vit D deficiency. They had enough calcium, but I think they figured out not enough sunlight (some of them were ducks). I don’t remember how they supplemented, but they stopped the shell-less eggs.

She’s close to 4 we believe. She’s absolutely one of my favorite girls. We recently hatched two of her eggs. One is a little blue frizzle that looks just like her & the other looks like their beautiful blue & gold serama dad. Then there’s my Rhode Island Red who looks like someone made a pillow out of her, she’s a hot mess. There won’t be any eggs outta her for a while 😂

I downgraded from 8 hens to 4 and then 2 were eaten by raccoons and the raccoons have kept trying to get to them for days now. They stopped laying. They're only 8 months old. I've seen feathers around but according to everything I read, they're too young to molt so I figured it's because they're traumatized. I am getting three pullets. They have lost their flock and they just stand around looking depressed. I also have some Flockleader coming. I'm hoping that they will either start laying again once they are a flock again or I'll just wait patiently until they do and the new pullets start laying.

    • @WelcometoChickenlandia
      @WelcometoChickenlandia  Рік тому

Yes, that’s normal. They should begin laying again any day now! For your layer with thin shells, sometimes that means they need a little more calcium. Try adding in some calcium rich scraps or maybe some grubs in addition to whatever calcium supplement your using. It’s also possibly an indication of something else going on, such as a respiratory issue. But I would start with some extra calcium and see how that goes. :)

My other 2 chickens were both laying well up until 9 days ago. They suddenly just quit. They layed fine even when it temporarily got to single digits (low not the high) and many days in the teens. It's gotten a bit warmer upper 20s to low 30s for the low with highs in 50s.
Ameracauna was laying 7 to 9 days on then skip a day. Brahma was laying 5 days a week. The days have gotten longer (not by much) but they layed fine when it was the shortest days.
They are on organic 18% protein crumbles plus scratch and peck which i ferment. No idea what happened.
How long should i wait before it becomes concerning that they quit laying?
