When the singing is bad it’s harder to play the minigame. What I wouldn’t mind though is if when you screwed up button prompts the singing turned bad, that would be accurate.

The English Karaoke is a real let down, but it’s clear they cheaped out on localising this game, which seems to be a trend at Sega right now. Now all we need is some people to cover the songs properly to show how they should be sung.

Extremely noticeable when you compare it to the Japanese dub, the lyric translation is ass and there was no effort in making the lyrics fit with the music. Then we have the fact they cast someone whose voice absolutely does not fit Kiryu, they have voice actors fumbling lines in the main story and side missions, and lip sync isn’t as accurate. You might feel they did a good job, but I don’t, the localization is a step down from the previous game in so many ways.

They focus too much on trying to squeeze in a literal translation and don’t try to adapt the lyrics to convey the same meaning in a way that doesn’t sound disjointed and forced. This is for the songs newly translated in 8, the ones preceding the game were fine, but 8 was a major let down.
Until this moment, it didn't even occur to me that anyone would rather play this in English. Their Japanese counterparts give such an epic performance, compared to what feels like early 90's dubbed anime. And Takaya Kuroda voice is so iconic as Kiryu, and the magic his golden singing voice he puts into every song can't be overstated. I literally enjoy every song in Japanese from every voice actor, but I'm having a hard time listening to a lot of this. Especially with all the auto tuning. Though, special shout out to Greg Chun, though. His singing voice was actually really good. Almost liked his Baka Mitai as much as the Japanese version.
My main problem is I prefer English Ichiban and Nanba. The others I could gladly take in either language... but the characters that WEREN'T introduced in 7 (and Joong Gi) really should be in Japanese. (I will say ENG Daigo and Saejima are fine, Matt Mercer as Majima does work but, oddly, I feel he sorta... he sounds like Yakuza 1 Majima without much of the madness which... is interesting but off.)
I played in Japanese and it's a damn shame they never fixed the audio-tune or re-recorded some of the vocal deliveries on certain lines. Expected a little better from them, but I guess there just wasn't enough time to fix or change that stuff. They have a limited budget, time constraints and scheduling issues for actors, audio engineers, studio time, etc. Hopefully in the next game, they cool off on the autotune, and I hope a few of the VA's find some time for a couple vocal lessons. Because personally, if I knew I was coming back for another Yakuza game, I'd want to work on my karaoke voice.
The songs that returned from 7 (The Future I Dreamed of, Nanba's Baka Mitai, Adachi's Machine Gun Kiss, Spring Breeze, Hell Stew) all sound nearly identical to how they did in 7 (with Machine Gun Kiss and Hell Stew receiving the autotune treatment; I personally think the autotune improved Adachi's MGK and I never liked HS much anyways) Joon-Gi Han and Zhao went all out for If I Could Love The One I Loved, I'd even wager they're better than the JP versions The other non-Kiryu new songs don't really have anything notable to them, they're there but I don't have much to say other than that they sound decent The Kiryu songs returning from Gaiden (TONIGHT, hands, and Baka Mitai) all sound great as well, although they definitely sounded a little better in Gaiden without the autotune, we get the benefit of Gaiden's better vocal direction here The new-new Kiryu song (Baka Darou) sounds like it was made for Yong and I will fight you on that The new-old Kiryu songs (Machine Gun Kiss and Judgment) are probably the most controversial. He could've been louder in MGK and while I did hate Judgment when I first heard it, it's started to grow on me, the only part I don't like is how he says the word Judgment at the end The only song I'd really say is bad here is Ichiban's Judgment, Ichiban's other songs had the charm of being nice and genuine, sounding like actual karaoke. Adding ungodly amounts of autotune to singing that's far from professional just ruins it and doesn't leave much redeeming qualities.
I wish they didn't stick to the exact translation of lyrics and focused on just catching the same theme but with more western writing style. The songs clearly sound worse because you have to say so much more words and the flow of lyrics doesn't align with the music. Like some music just doesn't suit the western style.. But awake, like a butterfly etc are pretty much western rock songs with like a butterfly almost like a evanescence style song with scream rap and very angelic style vocals. Even Future I dreamed of could sound much better if you just do more work on westernised lyrics.

The Kiryu songs returning from Gaiden (TONIGHT, hands, and Baka Mitai) all sound great as well, although they definitely sounded a little better in Gaiden without the autotune, we get the benefit of Gaiden's better vocal direction here
The new-new Kiryu song (Baka Darou) sounds like it was made for Yong and I will fight you on that
The new-old Kiryu songs (Machine Gun Kiss and Judgment) are probably the most controversial. He could've been louder in MGK and while I did hate Judgment when I first heard it, it's started to grow on me, the only part I don't like is how he says the word Judgment at the end
The only song I'd really say is bad here is Ichiban's Judgment, Ichiban's other songs had the charm of being nice and genuine, sounding like actual karaoke. Adding ungodly amounts of autotune to singing that's far from professional just ruins it and doesn't leave much redeeming qualities.

I wish they didn't stick to the exact translation of lyrics and focused on just catching the same theme but with more western writing style. The songs clearly sound worse because you have to say so much more words and the flow of lyrics doesn't align with the music.
Like some music just doesn't suit the western style.. But awake, like a butterfly etc are pretty much western rock songs with like a butterfly almost like a evanescence style song with scream rap and very angelic style vocals. Even Future I dreamed of could sound much better if you just do more work on westernised lyrics.

But man, in english it's just so awkardly funny, like, some of them are REALLY bad, mostly Yong Yea doing Kiryu and the only Joon gi Han song
To be fair, if it wasn't for the auto tune, some of the songs would be hilarious in the sort of Bad Friends IRL you know singing badly at karaoke vibe with this dub. Though Chitose and Zhao did fine in ENG and I think the ENG actors for the singing just need better direction etc

The problem I have with it is it ruins the good singing attempting to fix what doesn't need fixing - Robbie Daymond could've absolutely KILLED if I could love the one I loved but the autotune restricts his performance.
