Somebody shot a picture awhile back of a timber framed building still standing amid concrete and brick buildings that collapsed around it. The photographer mentioned it was in poor condition before the quake, but even then it was the only building still standing after. Was built of heavy timber with infill of brick. It was essentially a historical version of the system you show in this video

Though the instructions are calm and clear, don't rely 100% on this good video. It's clear these are very serious technical building codes. Pay a professional with experience to guide u and to inspect before u pour cement. Add extra steel, surpassing minimum code. U will sleep more peacefully. Add on later in life if its too costly in the first build. Good luck.

Adding more reinforcement is not always a good idea. One thing the member will lose some ductility. Also you could get closer to a balanced condition in compression and tension within a structural member which could lead to a failure.

Mark, I agree with you. These are basic technical building codes. For more than 6 Richter scale magnitude Hazardous and abnormal movement Earthquakes these structures will not sustain.

I'm from Pakistan side Kashmir we have a lot of earthquakes here like Nepal. Few months ago a earthquake came now there are long cracks in the floor next to the walls, cracks are 2 inch wide and I can see the wall in the ground through the gap going down to the foundation and some parts of the floor is compressed. Building is three stories high some minor damage upstairs.
