I had been over the old goethals bridge many times. Never the new one until recently that is an awesome bridge!

Why does the new and old gothels bridge look a lot like the tappan zee?

It's probably just a matter of cable-stayed bridges currently making the most sense for those span lengths (better technology/lower cost), just as steel truss bridges would have when the old ones were built.
