- The Goethals Bridge (Interstate 278) carries traffic over the Arthur Kill, connecting western Staten Island with New Jersey. The present-day cable-stayed bridge replaced an aging & obsolete bridge completed in 1928.
The new bridge opened to traffic on June 10, 2017; this video was filmed on the morning of June 18, 2017.

I'm sure going to miss the old span. Growing up, the old span was a symbol of arriving in the NYC area on the NJ Turnpike. It's so beautiful with the NYC skyline in the background.
Well if they would have done preventive maintenance and restoration on the historic old span, the replacement wouldnt have been necessary. That new span is hideous.
@@robertpreskop4425 it want even in bad shape though. It was just too narrow and lacked shoulders. All they needed to do was to construct a twin that's wider and has better safety standards then redeck the old span.
That means the last bridge that needs to be replaced, I guess....is the Outerbridge Crossing.
still hasnt despite the fact it literally opened the same day as the original gotheals.
