Ken Goodwin (7 April 1933 - 18 February 2012) was an English comedian, singer and musician best known for his performances on the ITV Television show The Comedians.
He was born William Kenneth Unwin in Manchester, Lancashire. His father was a stoker. While he was still a child, his mother walked out on the family - an experience he blamed for his insecurity and shyness. His father died from cancer when Unwin was 15.
Goodwin was a great fan of George Formby. He did various jobs and started performing in working men's clubs, telling jokes and playing the ukulele. He then performed on the Royal Variety Show in 1971 and in a summer season at the London Palladium, before his television break on Opportunity Knocks followed by The Comedians. He also appeared on BBC TVs The Good Old Days. He was the first regular performer on The Comedians to receive his own solo show on television, as ATV gave him his own TV special in 1972. He was a regular guest on television variety up to 1973, mainly on the ITV channels, with his most memorable slot being on the David Nixon Show in 1973. After that, appearances on television dwindled due to his wife's illness. He appeared twice in 1974 and not at all from 1975 onwards. He failed to re-appear on television after he started performing again in 1977. He remained a regular and much sought-after live act, especially in Blackpool, and the reason for the demise of his television career is unclear, particularly as other members of The Comedians (Mike Reid, Charlie Williams, Bernard Manning, Frank Carson, Jim Bowen) overtook Goodwin to have much longer and more successful careers on TV.
Goodwin was famous for his giggle and catchphrase, "settle down now" which he used a lot on The Comedians. This phrase , ' Settle Down '/ ' Got to have Tenderness ' , was also used for his 1972 Single release , on Pye Records, written by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent, one of a few 1970's releases; others were: ' Keep your Heart '/ ' I'm Alabamy Bound ' , '72 ; ' So Lucky '/ ' Just Like a Woman ' , '73 ; ' Memories '/ ' I Love How you Love Me ' , '76. There were three LP releases : ' Settle Down ' , '72 , on the Granada TV Label ; ' Memories ' , '76 ; and , ' Merry Christmas Darling ' , '79 , on the President Label.

Always laughed at his own joke's that's what made him funny.
It’s actually a golden rule of comedians NOT to laugh at their own jokes, but Ken made it his schtick and it was a joy to behold.

Was just a kid when I this man first used to make me laugh.. I'm now very nearly 59 and well chuffed to have recently rediscovered Ken and his great humour!! 💙

It's really strange to see Ken in his home type environment. He just used to come on and said settle down now, and we were crackin up. The guy was born funny, and was certainly one of the best on the comediens, absolutetly

What a lovely bloke Ken was.
I always wondered what happened to him in his later years.
There seems to be no trace of him whatsoever working in the 1990's as a stand up comic or even a singer.
I tried to find some information on what happened to him in his later years but I couldnt find anything meaningful.
As a comic, his style was clean and innocent which was actually great for the type of audiences he performed for.
Each to their own I guess.
The best comic in the 1970's was a bloke who never actually made it big.
He was an alternative comedian who was 25 years ahead of his time.
His name was John Paul Joans and he was amazing and completely different to the standard working mens club acts like Bernard Manning and George Roper.
His persona on stage was like a mad warlock.
In the 1970's John Paul Joans was the most talented stand up comic in Britain.
But he did not know how to market himself to TV executives.
As for Ken, he also messed up by not doing enough to promote himself on TV.
Apart from appearing on the TV show called "the comedians" Ken did very little TV work in the 1970's or 1980's
If he would have marketed himself properly to the TV executives I'm sure that they would have given him his own mini
TV show as he was an all round clean stand up comic.
Or at least they would have given him a slot here and there on other entertainment programmes
Ken did not have a very good business brain, just like John Paul Joans who was light years ahead of his time.
But Ken was a lovely bloke who will be missed dearly.
Im sorry I never got to meet John and Ken personally, as me and them would have had a great laugh hanging out with eachother and playing pool at all the local pubs where ever they performed.
I’m sure you’ve already done so, but Wikipedia gives some information on his retirement to Wales (Llandudno) and his passing in a care home with Alzheimer’s in 2012.

I dont trust Wikipedia Darren.
I've already seen alot of mistakes on Wikipedia regarding people who died - AND
i later found out some contrary details from emailing actual surviving family members, for example, like Bernard Manning.
All we can say about our dear Ken is that he had no TRACEABLE televised performances 1992 to 2005 and was effectively semi retired from at least circa 2005/2006.
I cant even find any published flyers from stand up comedy venues advertising him as performing in non televised appearances between 1992 and 2005.
Regarding Kens alzhemiers:
There are NO medical records released in the United Kingdom confirming exactly when Kens alzhemiers disease was officially diagnosed by a registered medical doctor.
This would have needed proper certified medical documentation which his family members would certainly NOT have published on the internet.
The exact date and circumstances of Kens diagnosis and treatment are unknown.
Also, Kens passing away in a retirement home has nothing to do with his untraceable work record as a comic and singer between 1992 and 2005.
I have my own theories about what happened regarding the alternative comedy scene that sprung up in the late 1980's and early 1990's and their unwillingness to book Ken.

Saw Ken at Bailey's Night Club in Derby many years ago. A true gentleman and a very funny guy. RIP Ken.

The man was a comic genius in some ways very similar I think to the great to Tommy Cooper, you only had look at Tommy and burst out laughing. The comedians in those days were far funnier than today
