A man after my own heart. I even listen to music on separate devices (which can be a portable CD player, a MiniDIsc player, or an iPod). This video was recommended to me, and I was not disappointed. Keep up the good, compartmentalised work! :-)
Interesting points. Regarding having a dumb vs smart phone... Having a smart phone is still a very good backup. Sometimes you HAVE to search something, otherwise be left asking around or calling someone else (not that I'm against doing that, but sometimes it's very inconvenient. And if it's about asking someone to do a google search for you, that's also not efficient, having to spend another person's time for a basic task)
I agree, I note that I still use the phone as a backup but it's not the best tool for the task if I have a laptop available for example. I also do need maps and a couple specific apps for my job, so a smartphone will always be in the cards no matter how much I don't really like them, haha!
This is one of these great rare videos that actually gives good thoughts about how we use devices (and other things) in our life. I am now trying to figure out how I should use my own devices for tasks I usually do. That may be life changer. Too many distractions happens around so I agree with your idea that everyone should think for a ways to concentrate into what they are aiming to accomplish. I would like to see in future what new thoughts and experiences you got around this idea, but for now I think you already said much enough to think. From some perspective this is minimalism (not extreme one) as they don't keep things that has no purpose, but keep only ones that still helps enjoying their life comfortably. And minimalists don't mind having several devices if every device is in use and has purpose.
Thanks you very much for your comment! I can get behind minimalism when it has to do with maximising PURPOSE instead of minimizing our lives and impacts. I saw it in my own life that I was heavily distracted by things that I didn't want to be distracted by. This, to me, is a way of taking our lives back from the time sinks that bring us minimal happiness, yet increase our stress loads substantially.
Looks like an x201. I picked up an x200 thinking it'd serve as a Linux typewriter. It became my daily driver work machine as it is surprisingly usable. Form factor and keeb are unbeatable. Anyone reading this on x201/x200, repaste CPU, SSD, max ram, arch based Linux, and an ax200 wifi card. Good to go.
@@JoshuaBlais Agreed, think many people overestimate the computing power their tasks really require. If not compiling/rendering, a new wifi card and SSD brings these up to a reasonable standard!
@@JoshuaBlais it was actually a blue dot at first but later moved over to a pentium 3 Thinkpad. Going back as far as 2006 with dells and then really getting into it in 2010 with thinkpads. Once I went to Thinkpad, I don't see any other laptop the same. I recall having to go back to using a laptop, I could not stand this HP laptop my old manager got me. So I bought a t440p for work instead and it was fantastic until it started to fall apart so I have to go to an AMD Thinkpad. Another great Thinkpad! I love how some of my other co-workers try to use my thinkpad but find that the track pad does not work because I disabled it so they have to use the red dot instead hahha
I agree with you on all of that, i just recently figured all that out for myself personally, in fact, when i listen you say all these words i understand that these words and ideas you said in that video are exactly my thougts, and now i see that video in my recommendations! this is wild, what a world we live in, nice video, keep it up!
Really good thoughts in this video. There are lots of analogies between this and several other UA-cam forums that focus (pun intended) on older cameras which have less of the functionality and menu options of newer cameras. With older and simpler cameras, where most of the controls are physical buttons or dials on the camera, people can just focus (sorry) on getting a good photo or taking their time to compose the elements in the photo. People like Steven Heise and Snappiness discuss this a lot in their reviews, which often turn more into metaphysical discussions than gear reviews. Might be worth a look for ideas. Thanks for the video.
It is a hack, but it works! I really have to make sure I set my intention when working with tech otherwise it is far too easy to fall down a rabbit hole!
This is a really great take on this topic. I've heard organization speakers start with the premise that contextual devices are impractical, before launching into their preferred system for creating context on shared devices/spaces. I've always found that off putting, so this is a great video! Btw: I found some of the more vocal music a bit distracting. Overall, the sound was really good, though, and this kind of music is otherwise great.
Thanks for the feedback! I think that creating these "walls" around our devices helps us to focus far more than if we did this on a general use computer.
Interesting view. I use different applications on my Linux to work and do fun stuff. I hate reading long texts on phone/tablet/pc, for novels and long texts I use my ebook reader. (and I read even more than oldschool books, because I don't need to set up a light and disturb others with it at night. But I also like my smartphone for being smart. Like navigation at unknown streets, signal messages with friends and family. notifications are off anyways and its on vibration for calls only. btw. The internet is lacking LineageOS tablet videos. can you show yours? Is it a Tab S6 Lite?l
I think that's the way to go - use the smartphone as a tool instead of as a social media consumption device, and it will make your life better. Notifications off 95% of the time. It is an s6 lite, you bet!
@@JoshuaBlais no probs! i *love* the idea behind this video. i try to separate my devices in a similar way, but you've given me a lot to think about on how to take that further! "Focus is a Superpower in a distracted world" Me, just now lol
@@TechDave I have taken all apps off my phone that don't help me to run my business or make my life better in a tangible way - and put them onto the cheap tablet. The tablet doesn't get used outside the use as a timer while I work until the evening. Been a very productive time in my life!

The lie that we are told is that a 10 year old computer cannot be a daily driver in 2022. They are still capable machines!
