- PIPELINE WELDER SIDE HUSTLE // HOW I PAY THE BILLS & HOW I GOT STARTED
Today I’m taking you along as I weld up some h brace corner post for a customer who is building fence around a new pond. If you are new here, I’m Austin Ross a pipeline welder and on this channel I share my life as a pipeline and rig welder in hopes that it helps another welder out. When building barbed wire fence you can do your h brace different ways. Some choose pipe fence braces and others choose wood. Building h-braces can also look different. There is no ones size fits all in fence brace but here I’m welding h braces and in this video I share some of my fence building tips. Since I’m putting this barbwife h brace in without knowing much else I’m choosing measurements and height based off of past projects and what is appealing to the eye. You want you welding h-braces when fence building to look good to the human eye because the support will be there either way. Check out my reorganized boxes on my mobile welding rig and get ideas for your welding rig or mobile welding business.

Austin i just came across your channel last night. I have no desire to be a pipe line welder but I do really enjoy your videos. It was a slow night at work and the time passed by watching your videos. You seen to be a very humble person. Keep up the great work.
I really enjoy your videos Austin. You seem like a good hardworking family man, you give the welding trade a good name.
I work union pipefitter and I 100% agree with your statement of starting out wherever you have a connection !
Austin, hello from Arkansas. I just subscribed to your channel and I'd like to say that I'm really impressed. You have a great personality, skill, are informative, and are a born entertainer.
Good to see you staying busy! Cant wait for ROW videos.
Just glad to see someone else talking to there self while fabricatin awesome work!
I’m about to finish my welding school associate degree. I’ve been welding since freshmen year so about 5 years now. (Im 20). Im sooo glad I found your channel you really help give a good idea on what expect and shit Props bro 🙏🏼
When i get laid off I usually go on world tours with my harmonica band.
Alvin ???
Simon ???
Theodore ???
I usually just end up hookin again ....... I guess every welder blows some pipe once in a while. life is a struggle !!!
@@Arykperry haha 😂, spit my coffee out ! Thanks Buddy !
@@Arykperry brother took me three times to get it!!!! good one.
@@Arykperry
Whats the biggest pipe you ever blown through?
Love it! I run a fencing business and switched over to using a majority of pipe for our jobs so this is an example of our daily life. Great job!
Also what kind of magnet was that you used to hold the tape to the post?!?! Slick trick!
I have a big toolbox with foam cutouts for my bevlers and torches, a separate box for my 2# sledge and all of my clamps, smaller drawer style box for small stuff like dogs amd saw blades. Got reels for my oxy-fuel leads and the SA200. Welded in some rods of 5/8" to hold my jack stands. So far it's worked.
Hey Austin I wasn’t being sarcastic or anything I appreciate your videos and use your saying learn something every day often
I’m a rig welder here in Oklahoma as well . I do pipe fences and more and I love every bit of it . Also would like to said thank you for your videos I learn a lot and get me motivation when stress and help me to think positive for me and my business thanks again Austin
I guess im asking randomly but does anybody know of a way to get back into an Instagram account..?
I was stupid lost my account password. I would love any tips you can offer me.
@Aldo Philip instablaster :)
@Tyler Micah Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Tyler Micah it did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thank you so much you really help me out!
@Aldo Philip Happy to help =)
The tune is Spirit!! My twin girls 5yo and 2yo boy watch em everday
hello sir ross my inspiration also welder fabricator here in philippines..godblessed u always
Good job using those clamps. The round jaw clamps are handy to put on the post to set the bar on so you can tack it. They also show up at the jobsite at the exact time you do. They are never hung over. They will never argue with you. You don't have to hear about their family problems. Best hired hands money can buy.
Thanks. I had just gotten that song outta my head for tonight. Here you go putting it right back in there. Lol.
I'm super excited to be getting my first rig here in a few days! And in the mean time I been building things for friends here at the house and soon be mobilizing! Awesum! Thanks for the videos and saying it's ok to do odds and ends, most the rig welders I kno be like "why have a rig and just weld on fences or make stairs and wat not? Mite as well not even have a truck!" Idk maybe they are naive lol!
I know I’m two years late, but your last statement about what those rig guys said about “why do odds n ends” is very important!
I read a quote, and it relates to how Italian terrazzo floors were restored….it’s something along the lines of, you use a big electric buffer to polish the center, but you still have to polish the edges and corners by hand-this relates to your statement because while those big shops ( or dedicated pipeliners) love churning out large contracts, they often might turn away the small, or monotonous non glamorous stuff. That’s where work like this falls into place-“polishing the corners “ by hand is still necessary to complete the whole job, but it’s tedious and someone still needs to do it…
It's crazy to know you welded with Leo Martinez. And it's even crazier to get the experience to learn from him and him also talking about you.
Love the video. Always learn new stuff an get great advise when watching.
Good work. Always getting stuff done .
Dude my daughter is OBSESSED with Spirit haha.. been going down your channels rabbit hole. That cracked me up
God bless you brother...all the way from Louisiana
You should get some rubber vacuum line caps to cover your torch connectors to keep the dirt out.
Love the look of pipe braces but nothing beats a good ole hedge brace
Austin really enjoy your videos, good luck wth work.
Good video and good luck to you. You have to do what you have to do. Take care.
My new favorite video! Thank You!
This style welding is also where I got my start. I’m now a class A Fitter/Combo Welder in Tulsa I have a rig put together wanting to get into pipeline. I have everything figured out except the bottom and would be willing to pay to make sure im ready to test when it’s time. We are on low hours and I’d be willing to come to you if your interested.
I love lookin all in my tool box's too what ever u need I got it 👍😍
We use a post driver on our skid steer instead of concrete and it works pretty good
A video on how to charge for little side projects like these please!
Love the videos!! a union brother local 597 chicago!!
time and material.
30 percent margin most of the time . Put it on paper makes it easier . A video
Would be nice .
It’s true man you can also weld on the side till it becomes a big job like wrought iron fence and weld on beams for buildings like barns and garages
On your cold saw blades. I was using EVO 14" blades for a couple years. Not sure what happened but cut ft is down on the newer ones. I'm using Demon Blades for now. Also, depending on where you're at don't throw your blades away when they dull. I send 5-7 at a time to the sharpeners. I get slightly more cut ft out of the sharpened ones than I do he new ones. I'll re-sharpen until I have to replace more than 3 teeth. At that point the blade gets tossed. I pay about $19 per blade to sharpen. Nice on a $85-$100 blade getting double use out of it. If you're close to DFW I use D&H down on Harry Hines for sharpening. Do you ever have to cut I Beam or large flat plate? The Milwaukee 8" steel cutting circular saw is magical!
Hey Austin. Love the content! Do you think you’ll ever go back to the pipeline? Loved the updates on the rightaway.
Nice rig Austin 👍
Wise advice bro. I started union ironwork in 1978 and retired, in good shape in 2017 at 57 years old. Do what you must...but....if you're looking for a pension and annuity, join a union. I really enjoy your channel Austin.
Finally some more at home video 👍🏻
Just the video I’ve been needing 👌🏽🤙🏽
Love the content Austin. Always a joy to watch buddy ... come on lol
Austin, on a slow week when it warms up, strip that entire bed, lift it off the truck, pressure wash it *and* your truck frame, and hit your frame *and* the bed with a coat or two of Chassis Saver paint. The stuff is fantastic, and deals with salt & weather ridiculously well.👍
I've been doing a ton of fencing at the moment. Saving for my move to Texas.
Side Hustle Is Always Key😎
Bang Up Trabajo🤠
Really enjoy your videos Austin! how about a video for how you notch pipe?
The tool box layout is impressive, but what I see is you spent some quality time getting the lid seals right. Other wise you'd be level full of dust mud and general dirt in them boxes. The torch handles would be full of dirt. I had a old factory made mechanics box for a while and could not keep it mucked out. The doors were shot and the compartments filled with dirt. I worked a lot on bigger corperate farms and long miles of rutty dirt trails. It was just hell on any rolling stock. don't miss those days.
I'm thinking about making some money with my Everlast welder on the side. More videos like this please.
I’m a union Pipefitter out of local 452 Lexington, KY. I’m a welder and I have had to travel but I have only been laid off 13 days last year. But I know it’s harder for 798 hands to get out on industrial jobs.
Love you vids! You should make a vid explain on how to charge!!
Honest work, it pays the bills.
Dirty hands,
Clean money.
Hey man thank you I am 15 right now a freshman in high school and I’m thinking about going to the pipeline I’ve been thinking about this for a while and I am in the welding program at my school texas I’m thinking about going to pipeline somewhere and I’m not sure what to do I did not know what to do at all and I started trying to figure it out thanks dear myself I know how to start a little early but it’s been working and thank you for making this video is been helping a lot and I should just watching your videos help me realize if having a truck and doing local work for people who would actually be a pretty good job of keeping busy around doing more welding work when you start getting out there and keep busy thank you for you keep it up thank you
Stay in school until you learn how to write a sentence.
Edward Duran Stay on your phone till you can get a life and stop trash talking with kids.
Man whoever ur working for sure does have alot of land!
Also I'll tell ya, a laser tape measure will save ya alot of time and make it your fit better between pipes, if you gotta make it fit with a hammer you knocking it off level. A chain wrench makes a perfect clamp for the ground around pipe. And dewalt quick clamps help for anytime you need a second hand, or third. O and a porta band for cutting fishmouths beats a torch for building braces👍👍
Hey if I could add photos I would show you the one pipe fence I have done. We pounded the entire job. Rock really wasn't a problem slowed us down a little but not to bad.
austin you are a top gun welder
Hell yeah keep up the hustle 👍
Enjoyed this video 👍👍 what was the reason for fencing the pond???? Keep up the good work and videos!!
Haha you’ve been watching a lot of Spirit! Lol I think I’ve seen them all with my daughter
Love your videos! Can you recommend me where to start off I really enjoying seeing the pipeline and I would like to be a welder one day
How do you know when you go back on the pipeline job ? Once again love the videos thanks 🙏🏻
Good stuff, man! Thanks for sharing.
I’m union local 167 Memphis, TN I have worked years of rat and now recently years of the brotherhood. They both have their perks. Work is work life is all about choices do what makes you happy
There Is a union in Memphis, TN and what is rat? Am a new welder trying to learn the ropes
xaphan rat is non union and yes it’s 5 minutes from downtown Memphis
Im trying to get my name out there and fortunately the pipeline runs through where i live and its coming back through this year so im gonna go for it
Making me want to start building a rig my dad was a welder my whole life
Love the rig man!
Great video as always... just curious, do you think the pipelines have slowed down due to the push for green energy ?
This was great!
ok i found your vides on your rig grate thanks
That tune is spirit
I love your channel and your rig , what size are your tires on your dodge , keep up the great videos
@Austin Ross there are other UA-camrs who are giving pipeline/welding classes. Is this something you would consider and if so what would be the cost of a few days? Thanks brother I love your videos.👍🏼
Learning a lot from you.. Do you recommend putting pipe down without concrete?? I’m doing a 4 foot fence I was thinking about driving the pipe down 2 1/2 feet without concrete..
I thought of this the other day... can you run a tub with an sa200 running sideways in the bed and still be able to pull a 5th wheel camper (gooseneck adapter. The truck is a long bed
Are the hose quick connects on your torches typical airline couplers or made specifically for torches?
When welding jobs slow down for me, I go do residential or commercial plumbing.
Great video
Just curious.... Austin what rods are you running on the fencing projects and also do you bevel the pipe or what exaclty is your fit up you run on fence?
Question: I'm thinking of getting the Lincoln 10,000 Eagle or should I look for a SA200??
Thanks for the video👍
THANKS for sharing again✌🏻👊🏻😎🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸❤❤❤❤
I left marine construction you motivated me to take my weld truck solo... Now I have now welded in 3 or 4 weeks and I'm running out of money ahhhhhh. I cannot find any side work
Do you supply the steel for these fencing projects and what is the pipe exactly? 2 inch schedule 40??
Being versatile is what is all about. Im also a mobile welder, but recently expressed interest in sandblasting as well. Maybe i should consider welding, sandblasting and painting 😁
Have you ever seen a flexvolt, or a Milwaukee xc angle grinder on the row?
Very good!
Just curious, I'm a B pressure welder in Alberta, Canada. This question might have been asked before, sorry if it has. I had to do 3 year apprenticeship before I got my Journeyman/Red Seal. After that I had to get a B pressure ticket, and a small bore ticket to weld on pipe of any size. Is there a similar thing in the States?
Never did the union thing cause I wasn’t real good at kissing ass or buying whiskey to get hired out. I’m a burnt out pipe/ tube welder turned instructor/ inspector. Now granted, that was a couple of decades ago, but, I never missed a check that I didn’t just “want some time off “ I’ll never draw a “pension check” but in my opinion, mans gotta make a living and the “brotherhood “ can do the same.
Do you know if they teach pipeline welding in the pipefitting/plumbing union?
So, does the union allow moonlighting on your own, but now allow you to go work for another company?
hi do you have any video on making your welding rig if so please show it thanks
Im sure you know this, but you couldPut a small tab on your lid for the kick stand to rest on. Just lift the lid higher and set the kick stand in it...that should keep it stable.
Did you bevel the ends of the cross braces to fit on the vertical pipe?
What is some good ways to practice welding for the pipeline?
I was wondering where did you get your glasses from
I wish these wheels were still on that truck! Makes one sharp rig with wm
Would it be possible to do a video on how to measure and cut the pipe to fit between your posts having a hard time getting it I try and practice as much as possible love the videos
Get a copy of The Pipe Fitters and Pipe welders handbook by Thomas W. Franklin. It will show you how to make templates & practice on paper & get some scrap pipe to practice on
I’m 16 wanting to build a welding rig would a 4x4 1500 gas work as a starter truck????
also some people fence in ponds and put pigs in there , they wallow out and hardpack the bottom so it seals the new pond. barbwire wont hold shit but itll keep cattle out. just food for thought ..
Curious, what is the sunglasses brand you got on?
You need to try space x. That last deal didn't go to well.
