Seeing Abraham just walking away and falling to his knees like that breaks me every time This mission literally saved his life and without it he’s just a guy who scared his wife and kids so badly that they ran off and got themselves torn to pieces by Walkers and it’s heartbreaking Michael Cudlitz does a great job.
Abrahams wife and kids were struggling adjusting to the change no electricity running water having to scavenge for food was hard enough but they had never seen the primal side of paternal instincts until the four men came after Abrahams wife and kids. That level of violence wasn’t only unpalatable to his wife but she couldn’t understand his rage and was terrified which the kids picked up on not realizing he was only tuning in to his dark side to handle other demons and only turned into a monster momentarily to keep his family safe
She should of understood that those men deserved what Abraham did to them. I always hated this backstory, it’s so ridiculous.

Also in the comics the kids and wife were brutally r4ped over and over and the son was forced to watch. Once Abe found out that’s when he killed the man that did it; with his bare hands. Probably scaring the family even more.
After Eugene admitted to sabotaging the bus, it made me think of something. The truck they had, when they first met Tara and Glenn. When Eugene picked up the sub machine gun and shot at the incoming walker...and the truck in general on accident. I don't think it was an accident, I think he also purposely hit the truck.
I like that it was revealed Eugene lied because while a scummy move it makes sense he knew he wasn’t the best survivor so he sees this tough dude and makes up the lie to convince him to carry him
This is a great episode because I loved seeing the backstory on Abraham and how he and Eugene got linked up Eugene gave Abraham a reason to live and the mission was keeping him going But Eugene also taught us another very important survival skill lying and giving people something to believe in Eugene is very smart he knew he was not physically capable of defending himself but he does has his mind a little bit like Tyrion Lannister.
i agree but imo the tv series didn't do enough to explain abrahams backstory. in the comics its explained that he killed a guy (or multiple idk exactly) bcs he raped his wife (and maybe the kids too i don't remember the details) but his family got scared, ran away & died. idk why the show didn't add the part where the guy he killed assaulted/abused his family, it makes his story way more tragic.
You won't regret continuing this incredible series, there's a lot to come...
I love this episode because It really makes you care about the new group especially Abraham After Abe’s family was killed Eugene came and saved his life and gave him a purpose.

This is why the episode can be hard to understand The editors failed to realize how many people have not read the comics and the full story really wasn’t explained well in the flashback scenes.
The comics have the Abraham story that his former neighbours/friends brutalized his wife and children while he was away if you look closely in the show his wife Ellen has bruises on her face so it is implied subtly and when Abraham returned and found out what happened he killed the men who did this.
His wife and children in the TV show were terrified he murdered those men that’s why they ran away The only way we can reason Abraham killing the men was completely justified is if we know the comic backstory.
The problem is that the flashback failed to give the entire picture of why Abraham did what he did and the fact it was near the beginning of the collapse So if you go back in your mind society had just collapsed in the back story so this was not normal behaviour to exact revenge like that.
For us as viewers it makes it even harder to understand the reaction of the wife and because the scenes for the backstory were incomplete Just realize that by this time in the story of Rick and our crew we are getting used seeing the brutality of lawlessness and revenge/justice killings (The Claimers and The Terminites deaths) So the connection aren’t easily made to understand Abraham’s back story without knowing the comic story.
In the episode if you look carefully you’ll see the bodies of his wife and children on the ground you see a corpse with a red head band this is Abraham’s wife Ellen Then it shows his red headed son face down and piece of luggage on the ground and his daughter to the right also face down This flash is only three seconds long so it is easy to miss and it is right after Eugene is hit and collapses after Abraham beat him When Abraham finds his wife and children dead this is why Abraham was going to kill himself not only because he felt alone/ isolated but also because he felt he had terrified his wife and children and caused them to run away from him and be killed by walkers.

In comic the guys that Abe killed sa'd his family, in show it isnt mentioned. His family just was scared of him beacuse of how he demolished those men.

So Abraham's wife was raped by those men, that is why he killed them..but I'm guessing due to the brutally of their deaths and probably the first time her and the kids seen murder, they were scared of him due to the brutal way he murdered those men. Abraham is a good guy, doing what any dad would do in an apocalypse(like how brutal Rick got tonprotect his son) and he was trained to kill due to being in the army

Abraham is a nice guy I think what ticked him off was Eugene saying he was smarter than most of them like he was proud of it Abraham and Rosita has given their life’s and risking their lives for this ultimate coward basically.
In Abraham’s head it sounded like I’m smarter than you because I was able to trick you into believing this.
Remember a few episodes bavk, when you were suggesting Eugene was creepy-ish?... thats why i wanted you to see 5x5. 😅

Comic Comparisons : Eugene’s story goes the exact same In the comics he says he lies because he knows he’s too weak to survive on his own His only advantage was lying and his knowledge as a high school science teacher he admits that he’s not strong like Abraham he’s not a leader like Rick he’s not good looking like Rosita He used what he knew what to do best If I was in his shoes I would’ve done the same.
I’ve always been a bit conflicted on Abrahams wife leaving. They had just been graped and violated by complete sickos. The people deserved to d1e. I guess if they actually saw it happening it may have been triggering. But enough to leave him for good? Always wondered about that. It was justified what he did.
It wasn’t because he killed them. It was how he did it. He probably killed him in a very gruesome way that scared his family.
The way he did it scared the family; traumatizing them even further, making them fearful of Abe.
Abraham saw his family eaten by walkers then was gonna kill himself but yes Eugene gave him hope to live and have a mission.
Poor Eugene, when the bus caught fire his hair dye kept running. Maggie and Eugene couldn't stop laughing.

They dont say it outright in the show, but in the books, abe killed them for... violating... his wife... and i think the kids, too... but not 100% on that part. Its been a min since I read them.
Edit to add, the wife did leave because what abe did scared the shit outta her. And that always kinda pissed me off.

they could've just went back to the town and refueled the fire truck using fuel from the other abandoned cars and the drove to the CDC. Even if Eugene isn't a scientist there might still be other scientist there, and even if there are no scientist there would tons of food / medical supplies and guns at those government buildings as we saw in TS-19 in season 1 with rick and the crew.
Eugene used his only survival tactic (lying) that he knew i cant blame him🤷

Michael Cudlitz (Abraham), on an episode of Talking Dead, tells the back story from the graphic novels: his neighbors had raped his family and he killed them in response, including using a can to bash someone's skull in, to then wake up to his family gone, Abraham was going to commit suicide after seeing his family tore up, Eugene saw him rip off his dog tags and put the gun in his mouth, so he came up with the lie to give Abraham a mission and at the same time he would have protection, 😏
