Hey Mr.Dan. Thank you for the time you invest in these videos. My wife and I went through losing our daughter over the Christmas holiday. And you have no idea how much, Videos like this help to keep a mans mind occupied. Thank you so much!!
The Guitologist I was watching some pro video game contest (sponsors, prizes and commentators and all) on cable and they were playing on what looked like old Commodore CRTs.
Had the 1320 in out kitchen for years. That was a kerb find too with the original remote on the top. New resistor in the power supply and we ran it untin the tube had nothing left to give! It had a fantastic picture years.
I bought a 27" Trinitron set in 1996. I sold it in 2010 to a good friend. The TV looked as good in 2010 as it did in '96. Great picture as well. Happy New Year!
Way back years ago I got in trouble had to go to court , was going to get fine and jail time ,any way lawyer got me out of my stupidness. To celebrate I bought this exact model of TV , was over $500 , I had to pay payments on it. It made me stay home and stay out of trouble lol funny to see one again👍
The dollar bills at the end is classic-I had a gentleman bring his set in one time and when he picked it up he paid for it with a load of dollar bills and we asked why he had so many dollar bills and he replied he was an "exotic" dancer and that is where the dollar bills came from-had to wear rubber gloves for that.
I used to do computer repair years ago and a real nice girl paid me in singles and even shared her pizza with me while I worked on her old Packard Bell.
Frequently seen on kitchen counters in Carmel or Pebble Beach when I was a cable installer there. Always gave a great picture no matter what the signal.
That cap is the filter for the stand-by power supply and is active whenever the TV is plugged in. It's a common failure in Sony TV's from this time period and I've fixed many of them by replacing this cap.
These are the kind of TVs that remind me of my childhood. I never had one this decent, and always coveted my few friends who had more money than we did. If I saw one today I'd snap it up just for the nostalgia value.
I remember in 1987 if someone offered one of these to me for $300 bucks id grab it. Greatest picture quality ever for a crt tv. I bet a retro gamer out there someplace could use it to hook up to an old commodore 64, or a tandy trs80, an amiga. Plenty of uses.
If I was in California, I'd pick it up. A good quality CRT with digital display is a great candidate for modification. There are a ton of mods you can do to these bad boys to use with arcade games, old computers, old video game consoles etc. They are fairly easy to mod to work with vintage computers especially along with arcade machines and even VGA. People are paying good money for modified TVs or paying someone to modify the TV they already have.
All it needs is an ATSC tuner/converter, and maybe an RF modulator. My Proton CRT TV plays like new with the ATSC tuner in a Magnavox VHS/DVD player/recorder. I still watch it.
You are such a piecework Django I can't believe that's a nice little Trinitron especially for old game consoles it's a shame I'm in Connecticut or I would save it
Only had one Trinitron, paid big money for a Trinitron Wega back in the 90's and after 2 years the green gun let go, tubes were big money so it got binned, never bought another, it was replacing a GEC Starline which had been running for 20 years!!
Not a bad installment to finish off the Old Year. That line, "Make sure to use enough alcohol to flood the table," just got to me. Unexpected. The money thing was pretty funny too-- getting more mellow in your old age! Best of the New Year, Shango-- looking forward to the next pile of sweet junk!
I just gave a 20 inch Samsung CRT TV to a friend of mine. His set went blooey. He'd a loved the Sony you're giving away. Alas, we're from the Chicagoland area.
I still have my Australian purchased SONY Vega 68cm TV with Sub Woofer. Used to be the "Ultimate" top of the line 4:3 Flat Screen CRT for the day in my Lounge room so still can't depart with it yet. It's used in my child's room for DVD and video games. Still has amazing colour and sound so couldn't bear to chuck it out!
When I used to work in the TV industry as a young engineer way back when when crts used to be replaced another engineer and myself used to break the neck on the CRT and put it straight in the bin
You described the exact same smell I smelled with my first (and sadly, only) Trinitron. It was a 29" that I'd gotten simply because everybody said it was the best for retro gaming. Turns out it already was past it's prime, giving a pinkish hue with the brightness over 50, and I sometimes could catch a whiff of that smell of cigarettes and possibly french fries XD. I sold it off, lost about 40% of what I had paid, but I was happy to get rid of it at the time. But now I regret doing so; maybe a simple fix just like this could have given it new life...
Looks like one of the good Sonys. I collect Sony TVs from the 70's to the mid 80's So its a bit too new for me. I used a Sony KV-1311 with my Amiga. I used a Sony 13 inch TV that had a Hit button on my C64.
That's exactly what's going on with 87.7. It's easier to get the LPTV license than the FM license, considering how saturated the FM band is these days. Hell, I live in a city of 500,000 and there's almost no room on the FM dial for DXing anymore because of how many stations there are. I can't imagine how bad it must be in LA.
Can you imagine the thrill one of Shango's neighbors would get if they saw their curbed TV being the star of this show?? What an honor for the poor old Sony to be in one of the most popular videos on You Tube!!
Another way to check if a remote is working is to put it next to the antenna of a detuned AM radio. I used to check them that way before cameras became ubiquitous.
A "quick-and-dirty-fixer-upper" - only one cap needed to make the set work. Proof positive that some 80's model gear was better built. Peace be with you Shango and have a great New Year man :)
Even if it's wrong remote Sony is surprisingly consistent with their remote protocol. I have a remote from 1992 Trinitron that still works just fine on new Sony TVs (I mean it doesn't have multimedia buttons but changing the channel, on/off, input device, volume and so on work).
Aww, I was staying at Redondo beach a few weeks ago, I would loved to have picked up that Sony and hauled it all the way back to central Australia! Missed out!
I have the woodgrain case version of this model only issue I ever had was a bad solder joint on one of the caps,, no remote with mine but I believe all functions needed are under the flap or on the front
Just to make my hobby pay for itself, I do small electronics repairs for the neighbors. It's kind of amazing how many people bring by remotes that are simply filthy inside and out. The worst ones just get washed in the sink with dishsoap, and very often that fixes them just fine once all the fried chicken grease and old orange juice is gone.
Nice. I have a TV very close to this one. A KV1393R. The version with woodgrain style chassis. A nice TV. Has Composite video inputs too. Probably takes the same tube as that one. I know the tube in mine is interchangeable with the KV13TR24. The remote for that TV worked for the 1393R too. So most of the remotes (for the 13 inchers at least) probably use the same codes. Man if I lived anywhere near you I'd be interested in picking it up just for the tube in that thing. Ever since I swapped the tube from the KV13TR24 into my KV1393R, the KV13TR24 is in need of a better one. (the convergence is out of whack on the original tube that came with the 1393R and the yoke didn't have convergence rings so I coudln't fix it. I swapped the yokes out but it's still not where I'd like it to be) The good convergance tube from the TR24 now lives in the 1393R. Would like to have the TR24 have a good tube too one of these days. I live way out in Texas so no chance of me getting that one. :( Would be a shame to EOL that. I found both the KV13TR24 and 1393R to be good sets. That one seems a bit older and lacks composite inputs but it would still be a great set for classic TV shows or retro game stuff. EDIT: If you end up having to EOL it, keep the tube/neckboard/yoke. I would be interested in it later if it has good convergence/geometry and if wouldn't be too unreasonable for you to ship it. Tax money refund day is around the corner and I wouldn't mind paying the 40+ shipping charge that would likely be incurred from shipping that 20+ pound tube. :P I can say the chassis on these things definitely won't survive shipping though so you'd have to somehow ship the tube on it's own. Not sure how that works. Screwing it down into some basic wooden frame I guess?. I've had two TR24s come to me damaged (with first one that destroyed the tube. Got lucky with the second one. Tube in that one survived and that one has good enough convergence so I moved that one to my 1393R)) EDIT2: Also if you have to EoL it and shipping not an option, I'd be interested in a few parts from it. The neckboard and the deflection yoke and any convergance strips/magnets that may be attached to the back of the tube. If you still have this thing in a month or so and have to EoL, I'll be interested in those parts if you can't ship the tube. ;) The TR24's neckboard is split in half (accident in shipping. Bottom chassis mounts for tube failed) and I had to jerry rig it back together by bridging the broken traces with wires. So it at the very least needs a new neckboard and I know it's compatible. Can tell just by the quick appearences of it in this video. Tube is pretty much identical to the one my KV1393R and KV13TR24 as I've been able to swap all the parts for those around. Same story this with one I'm 99% sure.

Hahaha, I'm still wiping tears of laughter from my eyes, after just seeing the 'money rain' down on this little 32 year old Sony! Great job repairing and great video too!😃
I was hoping I could get some help. I found an old black and white tv from the 70’s/80’s on the side of the road today. I brought it home and hooked up my old vcr and tried to play a movie. The hold on the tv is very messed up and can only hold the picture for a second or two before becoming sketchy. After a few minutes the tv started to smoke and it put off a terrible smell. I’m not sure what Is causing it to smoke though. I don’t know if it’s because of rain damage, dirt/dust, lack of use maybe?, or maybe something else in the tv itself. I really wanna get this old tv to work again. Can I please get some help?
The clue is that frame (vertical) hold, I assume rather than horizontal was not right upon testing. Chances are it will be an electrolytic capacitor that has failed just like in this video. Visually check for bulging tops before worrying about circuit diagrams etc. Richard (UK)
These are all the rage with retro gamers and the like, so you could always market it as a 'monitor for home computer use, and retro consoles'..also works as a TV! 2-for-the-price-of-one! A little clever marketing goes a long way! ;)
I had the UK equivalent of this TV in use until about 10 years ago. It wasn't worth repairing when it failed though due to a lack of a SCART (RGB and audio input) socket. Strange that Sony missed that out of this particular model, it must have been their entry level portable.
The last “picture bulb” set in our living room was a Sony Trinitron with a flat screen 36” CRT. Great picture but we never moved it around much since I’m guessing it weighed about 250 lbs.
@@5roundsrapid263 - Our set could do 1080i with the component video inputs. Bought one of the early ATSC set top boxes from Samsung and was watching local TV stations in HD before most people knew it was happening.
i have a sony that when the screen goes all white or too bright it gets a bit redish, most of the time it looks great but when i'm playing a game with too many bright colors at the same time it gets a bit red, can i adjust it somehow in a hardware level or it's a service menu kind of thing?
Those CRT sets are great for older video games, and people do use them for that. Newer LCD sets can have timing lag problems which make playing on older systems more difficult.

Just take a look inside and see what's exploded. Probably a capacitor. Just watch out for high voltage (discharge CRT)
Sony made some great sets. I bought a 32 inch Sony XBR in 1993 and it served me well until I made the move to an HD set.
Did FLIR replace your thermal cam?
The Guitologist last video he said they did.
It's good for watching those good old x rated 80s and 90s VHS tapes.
Sony trinitron sets were dam good, hopefully it will be adopted.
The money just made me laugh, your sense of humor is spot on :-D
Panasonic Quintrix was better
Never heard of that one, not something i've ever seen.
@@pyeltd.5457 quintrix was good yes.
I had the th-36pg50 th-36pd50 and others.
But Sony always was better to me
Looks great looking back in 1890
I'll take the set but first open it back up and re-solder the Horz drive transformer and the IF pack lol. great video as always man.
Happy 2020 from Philippines.
Dammit....wish I was in LA....these are GREAT for vintage gaming. This would be MINE!! Keep up the great work!
These are all the rage with retro gamers and the like, so you could always market it as a 'monitor for home computer use, and retro consoles'..also works as a TV! 2-for-the-price-of-one!
A little clever marketing goes a long way! ;)
You're the best ! Very entertening made my day!
I had the UK equivalent of this TV in use until about 10 years ago. It wasn't worth repairing when it failed though due to a lack of a SCART (RGB and audio input) socket. Strange that Sony missed that out of this particular model, it must have been their entry level portable.
We had the 20 inch version of that set. Used it as late as 2006.
The last “picture bulb” set in our living room was a Sony Trinitron with a flat screen 36” CRT. Great picture but we never moved it around much since I’m guessing it weighed about 250 lbs.
I had one too, but HD. It looked amazing, but we’d just had a baby, and were afraid it might fall.
@@5roundsrapid263 - Our set could do 1080i with the component video inputs. Bought one of the early ATSC set top boxes from Samsung and was watching local TV stations in HD before most people knew it was happening.
Yeah I had a 36" Panasonic which I ended up having to pay someone to take away, such was the colossal weight.
fevengr I had the same setup! We had a whole 8 digital channels. We had DirecTV with 10 more on top of that.
i have a sony that when the screen goes all white or too bright it gets a bit redish, most of the time it looks great but when i'm playing a game with too many bright colors at the same time it gets a bit red, can i adjust it somehow in a hardware level or it's a service menu kind of thing?
It’s a funny coincidence but I’ve got a old mid 2000 Sony Bravia plasma tv And I found it in the hard rubbish and it works
That's a sweet TV. Damn distance... I'd totally take that.
Haha very nice i love it i like youre sence of humor Shango066
Happy New Year Shango006. Thank for all the great videos.
thanks
Fix it for use with a digital converter?
Not a bad set for playing your retro video games on.
Does it come with the remote batteries?
Had one of these in 1987 and it was broke back then even..75$ to have it fixed, money I didn't have back then.
Those CRT sets are great for older video games, and people do use them for that. Newer LCD sets can have timing lag problems which make playing on older systems more difficult.
These TVs are quite sought after by retro game enthusiasts. The local retro games store here in reno will actually buy them from you
They go for almost $100 on eBay.
