Hello Judge Julie, I'm right here to help on what I think is the best platform to reach students wanting a spot of knowledge. I did live TV for 18 years and am so pleased to be here. If you get stuck or have a question, all you need to do is DIRECT MESSAGE me to my Instagram astarsplace The video function is an excellent addition to technology and means I can see immediately what you are seeing. I will indeed. I just smiled, you're just wonderful to take time out of your busy schedule to reply to comments And thank you again, for offering such an amazing class in a peaceful atmosphere. If you have grandchildren, do show them how to sew, give them something they can really use. Our great-grandmother uses to make our summer clothes without any pattern when we visit, but we were too busy playing and didn't pick up the trade. Blessings Ms. V
Thank you so much for explaining it so well! I’m a beginner and was questioning ‘on the fold’…I take it that it means ‘Place on the fold’. Now I can finish my linen pant waistband & casing. ❤
Hi Gaetane, I'm pleased I could help. I have another tutorial due for release shortly which I think might further help. If you connect with me via @astarsplace on Instagram, that's where I announce what's newly released to UA-cam. Kind regard, Astar
Thank you so much, Astar's place, for this video. My daughter is really into sewing, and she is a beginner. You really helped her with this video....I can't believe this video was 6 years ago!
I really enjoy how you keep your lessons professional and to the point. I took basic sewing in school over 30 years ago in high school and thought I could jump right into sewing. Not so! I had to take a class on using these computerized sewing/quilting machine, nothing like we had in class. Now here re-learning to place my pattern on the material the correct way. I think the Lord for awesome people as you, that take time out to share their time and career with others around the world. And thank you so very much for not holding back the important information then leaving a link to buy the DVD for $49.99. Blessings

I'm a newbie in learning to sew and just found your 101 instructions. Your instructions are right on spot. Very detailed, very precise. So glad I found you. Please don't take down your website. Thank you.
I'm a beginner at sewing and I am really enjoying your channel. Thank you for making this journey fun for me. It's been years since I have tried to sew.
This is Absolutely Amazing! Astar, thank you for breaking down the technical jargon of reading a pattern. I was getting a little overwhelmed looking at my pattern for a project I'm going to complete. Your explanation was very helpful. You have good energy and I was able to follow along. Thank you for posting this. May God bless you.
I have Asperger's, a form of autism, and I am currently working on becoming a wedding dress designer and maker. I find this to be one of the best dressmaking tutorials (even if I have to rewatch it). I have been trying to figure out how to pin the dress patterns onto the fabric, and then cut out the fabric slowly and carefully. I am trying to make a formal red dress for the final project that I am currently on for the online dressmaking course at Penn Foster. Once I complete the final project and graduate from the course this month, I will start making the first wedding dress. From now until the end of 2019, I will have a few wedding dresses made for the Portland Bridal Show. What I'm trying to say is I hope this video will help me prepare to make dresses, especially wedding dresses.
Hi Astar, pro tip, I bought bed risers for the legs of my cutting table. That way you can get your table at an appropriate height without having to stoop over and hurt your back. Another tip, put your phone on "do not disturb" if you don't want it ringing and chiming off the hook.
Thank you for telling me to always make sure that the right sides of the material have to be together before cutting out. I have had so much trouble trying to find out this info. Not many sewing videos tell you this. I love all of your tips in the video. Best wishes Ann in South Australia.
I am learning so much from your videos. Just bought a dress pattern this morning and it mentioned getting a 4 way stretch fabric. Had no idea what that meant, and now I do. Thanks!

Wow! You are making me so excited to sew with a pattern again! I've tried to make a dress with a pattern before and it was so discouraging that I just gave up trying to use them altogether.
Your personality made this vid 100x more enjoyable! Thank you sooo much for all these tips! Do you trace the outline of the pieces onto the fabric before you cut or do you jump straight into cutting?
Oh my gosh, you are hilarious! Love the videos, they are very helpful. I haven't sewn from a pattern for a long time, but this year my daughter wants a special cosplay costume which we have to make. Looking forward your other videos.
I am so happy that I've found this channel! You are so enjoyable, funny, and informative! You make me feel a lot more comfortable about sewing a dress and other creations! I can't wait to get back on track to teaching myself how to sew! Looking forwards to many new things :)!
Hi Robin, pin pin pin & then measure measure again. Check check and then leap. Omg, when I first started out, there were many disasters because I didn't do the pin pin pin or measure accurately. Waste is the word of both material and time. Keep safe Astar

Astar, first time sewer here. You are sooo cute and crack me up. I love that your videos are so engaging and keep me entertained. Sewing videos can be so mundane and it's hard when you're starting out. I just subscribed and can't wait to see more of your videos! Keep being amazing!
And she said throw it away I felt that😂😂I’m about to start on a new project tomorrow I’m a newbie and I’m trying to make these silk pajamas I’m scareddd😬😬but excited😁😁
Hi Astar, what fun videos. I have always wanted to learn how to sew but never was able to when I was younger and now that I am 55, I am trying to learn something new. I am a crocheter who needs to find a new craft to let my sore arms and hands rest. Sew sewing it is. I did take a class with a friend and it said it was a beginners class but there were more people in the class that knew what they were doing, so the instructor really couldn't teach what I needed so I stopped going. It's all about the pattern layout and cutting. So I am going to watch a few times and even pick out a pattern. I am so nervous about it. But my question to you is... On this part 2 of how to sew for beginners, you laid out the piece on the fold but you turned it over so words were at the bottom. Is that what we are supposed to do on any piece that says to lay on fold or does the instructions on the paper tell to do that. This is like speaking Spanish to me. Thank you for your time!
Hello Diane, good question. All instructions for layout and placement are on the pattern. If the pattern piece tells you to place it on the fold then this is what you must do. Sometimes to save fabric I will flip the pattern piece over. As long as everything is straight and measured along the pattern and it isn't going to interfere with the fabric print ie: say the pattern or print of the fabric has roses growing up, if you go the wrong way when finished half will look like they are growing up and the other side look like they are growing down, PROBLEM... It can be confusing, but just keep referring back to the instructions on the 'layout/cutting' instruction sheet. Hope this helps Astar
Good info Astar, you have helped me a lot. I want to make some men's light weight summer short pants for myself. Do you have any videos pertaining to men's clothing? Thanks again
Hi I have just found your videos and am now a subscriber. I am brand new to sewing but want to sew my own clothes. You have just turned the pattern piece around so the printed side is down. If you don't explain later could you please tell me why. Thank in advance. Lou, England.
As long as you are cutting two layers of fabric at once, it doesn't matter if the printed side of the pattern is up or down. It does matter if you are cutting fabric pieces separately - then the pattern must be up on one and down on the other so you get a left and a right hand side.
Louise Parish Hello Louise, I turned the piece around so as not to waste fabric. On the cutting and layout instructions they show several pattern layout solutions. After cutting out probably millions of patterns I forget I'm meant to be teacher sharing and forget to provide every detail. Promise to go slower with the next series. X Astar
Newbie Tip 2: At 7:30 Astar provides good tips on how to lay the pattern on the fabric; however, the 'Cutting Layout' diagram is provided by the pattern. Look at 2:25 and pause. The cutting layout takes the guess work out of pattern placement. Just like she said, 'make sure the fabric is folded in correct direction to account for the horizontal 'stretch.'
I am a beginning sewer, and i love your videos....one question...do i need to iron the pattern out if it is very wrinkled to make sure fabric is cut to correct size?
I fancy your videos but I’m still confused about the notches. The notch arrows point inwards but when I look at the instructions it looks like the notch arrows are pointing outward. Do I cut the fabric inwards or outwards? Cheers 😊
Hello and thank you for your amazing videos! I have a question for you if you don't mind? I'm a novice and just cutting out my very first sewing pattern and have already got a dilemma! I have needed to shorten the dress by 6 inches and have used the waist line to make a fold of 3 inches as I've seen others do, however, thats changed the whole shape of the paper pattern so even though I'm keeping the grain lines in line, the pattern is sticking out in places. what do I do? I know I need to follow the line for my size? For reference I'm using pattern from NewLook 6125 and dress A. I'm not sure how to explain my dilemma but I;m hoping you'll understand what I mean? any help would be appreciated. Thank you and keep up the great videos!
Angela Caldwell not really Angela, but the closer the better as you don't want to waste fabric unnecessarily. Usually the manufacturer will show a layout plan. X Astar
Hi. Thanks for the wondeful tutorials. There is one thing I was wondering, you turned the one pattern piece face down (the one on the fold) before you pinned it but you left the other two pieces face up. Is there a reason for this?
+Stitching In SA The direction 'place line on fold' means to do exactly that-place the line of the pattern on the line of the fold. She could have turned the pattern piece 180 degrees so the curved part was facing the right side of the video, but she opted to flip it instead. It's so hard to tell what's vitally important or forgettable sometimes.
Hello, you are correct, I cheated the process to save material. As long as the pattern or print on the fabric isn't going to appear to run upside down and as long as the grains all run the same way, yes you can flip it over. Hope this helps Astar
Hi Lynn - I wouldn't go there you will have issues and end up using twice as much fabric as necessary. Use width of fabric that the pattern suggests - way easier! good luck - love Astar xx
Hello Lynn, yes you can use the 42 if it is wide enough to fit the largest pieces of pattern. You will probably need more fabric than stated as well. Plus there is always a lot of fiddling about necessary to fit every piece, but it can be done. Kind regards Astar
Hello Jessica, I loved that style of dress so much I got carried away and made 5. Very easy to make and super nice to wear. They wash up like new every time. Love Astar x
Hello, the reason I always measure in, is to ensure that the line is exactly the same measurement all the way along. That way I know that it will hang straight and all lines or patterning on fabric hang correctly on garment once finished. Hope this helps, Astar
Help!!!! My mom is what I would call an expert sewer and I'm a would call myself a beginner. I choose simplicity pattern S8857 thinking we could see together. My mother said the directions are not very clear so we are stumped. Can you please help? Thanks!!

Good info Astar, you have helped me a lot. I want to make some men's light weight summer short pants for myself. Do you have any videos pertaining to men's clothing? Thanks again
love your videos and your dress is beautiful just subscribed 😊
Can you show us the rest of your studio?
I love your videos
When you placed the first pattern on the fold, How come you turned it over?
Hi I have just found your videos and am now a subscriber. I am brand new to sewing but want to sew my own clothes. You have just turned the pattern piece around so the printed side is down. If you don't explain later could you please tell me why. Thank in advance. Lou, England.
As long as you are cutting two layers of fabric at once, it doesn't matter if the printed side of the pattern is up or down. It does matter if you are cutting fabric pieces separately - then the pattern must be up on one and down on the other so you get a left and a right hand side.
Evelyn R thank you
Louise Parish Hello Louise, I turned the piece around so as not to waste fabric. On the cutting and layout instructions they show several pattern layout solutions. After cutting out probably millions of patterns I forget I'm meant to be teacher sharing and forget to provide every detail. Promise to go slower with the next series. X Astar
~ Luv luv your tutorials, you keep me interested through out the whole process. Than You🌹🌼🌸~
when cutting out a pattern should you cut a little further from the pattern piece to have room to sew everything together?
You are awesome. Thank you
Newbie Tip 2: At 7:30 Astar provides good tips on how to lay the pattern on the fabric; however, the 'Cutting Layout' diagram is provided by the pattern.
Hello, you don't need to iron pattern, if it has lots if wrinkles a cool iron should eliminate them.
Thank you very much for responding!
Thank you. I love the shows and are keen to see more clothes making shows. Any chance of a simple dress or skirt please.
That is a good question. YES I would just to ensure everything is neat and tidy and EXACT. Kind Regards Astar
Good day, trying to learn sewing. I was wondering why you flipped the first pattern over to cut out? The others were right side up.
Thank you!
Danielle Hatcher hello Danielle, I flipped it over to save wastage of fabric,
Hello. Can you please teach how to make patterns for dresses ...
Hi! Can you tell me why the fabric needs to be right sides together when you cut it out? Just curious. Thanks!
So say if you are making a flat object it would be stretchy vertically?
Is there a standard measurement to measuring how far your pattern pieces need to be from each other?
Angela Caldwell not really Angela, but the closer the better as you don't want to waste fabric unnecessarily. Usually the manufacturer will show a layout plan. X Astar
did you make the dress your wearing in this video>
Hope this helps Astar
hi love this. my pattern says 45 or 60 wide but the fabric I have looked at is 42 can I still use this? I am a beginner and not to sure.
Im learnin to sew and this looks so hard to do 😩
hello,i like your dress, did you make it?
Hello Jessica, I loved that style of dress so much I got carried away and made 5. Very easy to make and super nice to wear. They wash up like new every time. Love Astar x
hi,really?I don't know how to make them?dont know how to sew nothing, nice
I'm not sure if I missed it, but why did you need to measure from the pattern to the edge of the fabric?
I was wondering the same
I believe it's to make sure it's straight and going with the grain
Yup yup yup. To make sure it's straight
