Hello to all the people who have watched this video and the ones who have left comments - please be aware this is for all my friends who have never attempted sewing in there life. So to some of you it might appear to you that I'm trying to teach you how to suck eggs - but I am only offering assistance to those that are in a dress making fog! Good luck to all the newbies and to those who know more than me - help the beginners! Love Astar xx
+Astar's Place Thank you Astar !You have a heart of gold ..It is very noble for you to go out of your way to make in depth tutorials for new sewers who maybe did not have a home economics program in school or even a mother /grandmother who taught them to sew !You are such an elegant woman with many talents ..I would add that you also have impeccable style and taste!
Not going to lie: I took a home economics course, specifically sewing, in 7th grade in our excellent public schools in New Jersey in 1977. I recall having to sew together some sort of handbag. That was the last time I ever set hands on a sewing machine. Those things always scared me: never quite sure when it's going to punch a needle through my hands. My mom ended having to re-sew the handbag I made, because the white threads went everywhere on the blue bag. I could never understand how one "starts" and then "ends"/ties off the thread.
I've tried to watch a lot of videos on beginner sewing to help me get started but you are the first person to break it down into easy terms that I can understand. I'm not afraid of the patterns I bought anymore! Thank you and I can't wait to get started!
I love Astar. I didn't have anyone to teach me to sew and have learned bits and pieces from UA-cam. She is great. I respect her tenacity and good habits.
mary saw Mary, thank you so much. When I set out to do these segments I just knew there would be a few in the World who might appreciate a helping hand. X Astar

Kind regards Astar PS: I'm not an expert like my mother was but know a few of the basics well.

I was teaching myself to sew. This was one of the first videos I looked up on UA-cam. It was a huge help to get me started with patterns. She might go left and right at breakneck speeds, but the basics she covers are incredibly helpful to a ground level beginner.

Take a breath, then check again and leap right on in. Any issues just DM to my whatsapp or instagram. I've only just worked out that I can video talk via these services. Love for now Astar
I just absolutely love your personality that comes through as you're teaching. I'm new to the sewing world. I love it! I want to learn everything I can. You said to ask you anything so here is my question...Could you make a video explaining, in detail, the differences in thread tension and adjustments to the presser foot pressure? I cannot find a video on the subject. It would be deeply appreciated. Thank you
@CrossFit I don't think she means any disrespect towards us, this is for beginners and besides it's really no different then a 'Drawing Tutorial' saying you need an eraser (This is just what I think I'm not trying to argue)
Selena Trevino Hi Selena you have hit the nail on the head! This really is for very newbies who need a lot of help! Thank you for you support!! Love Astar xx
Well I recently started my first project and came to an abrupt stop when I realised I've stitched the lining onto the wrong side 🙄...so....I for one was very happy to find that these tutorials take it to the very basic start....unfortunately not all of us had mums to learn from so you go Astar!!
THANK YOU! I Am always thinking about how I didn't grow up with my mom so I feel I am at a disadvantage to fashion and certain girl stuff, lol I'm glad I'm not the only one !
Kat J I grew up with my mom who tried desperately to teach me fashion. lol I have none. I live in jeans and Disney tshirts still and I'm almost 28 😂 I'm only now getting more interested now that I'm losing weight
This is so awesome Astar, I really want to start making my own clothes but was worried my sewing skills would be too rusty. Thanks from a long time fan from NZ. I'm pretty sure I started watching you on tv in my teens and I'm in my thirty's now lol.

I been sewing and doing cross stitch since i was 5 or 6 years old, my great grandmother well all the women on my moms side sew, quilt, needle point and have since they were little girls too. I now have a grand daughter of my own and my mom, grandmothers made my little dresses when i was toddler so i stumbled across your channel to brush up on pattern use because i am an odd size top to bottom and just tall enough that pettit is to short and not tall enough for regular lengths to fit right in inseems or length and hips are way larger than waist and my natural waiste is higher than normal women and my torso is not really long but not short enough for short and my bust well my peak bust is 44.5 inches and under is bust 35 to 35.5 inches my waist is( natural waist line) 31 inches and hips are 42.5 inches and not budging up or down and my inseam is 12.5 tight and 13 to 13.5 inches comfortable but not baggy. I am 5'5" inches tall and weight 165 to 155 lbs. I am premenopausal 40 yr old married 4 grown kids, 1 11yr old child at home and 1 grand daughter who is 18 months and so sweet sassy she will make you mad happy and cry all in one bat of the eye. Sorry i spend alot of alone at home these days and yes your channel you seem like my neighbor who if i need a cup of milk or just babble ramble about nothing then i could call you.... thanks for taking the time to the channel videos you keep me company now and give me useful tips so i dont screw my grand babies dress....lol
Oh my goodness I wish you could come over and help me fix the dress I made… I first dress and it turned out like a tent! LOL I just have to figure out how to make it smaller now
Hi Rebekah, I am thrilled I could help. My mother taught me how to sew and I'll never be as professional as she was, but once you've got the basic principles locked and loaded & can read the pattern, everything falls into place. I'm very proud of you. Warm regards Astar
I'm interested in making pillows, among other things. I love the collection of pillows you have in the background. How do you pick the fabrics and where do you buy them?
+Jeanne Chery I just chose shades, tones and tints of one colour to make it simple. Then the flowers become the colour in the room. I will add cushion making to my video list! Love Astar xx
Hi Astar, what fabric is your green spotty dress made of? It would be great to learn what fabrics are out there and what best to use them for. I've been sewing for 2 weeks and I'm loving it! Thanks, Tamara.
Astar, at 2:30, you mentioned a mistake I made as a newbie. The "size" on the pattern is NOT the best way to determine the correct amount of fabric needed, looking at the measurements is. For ex., I wear a sz 10 in US. On the front of my pattern, McCalls M6700, the sz is 'B5 (8-10-12-14-16)'. On the back of the envelope, it lists in the "Combinations' section sz B5 (8-10-12-14-16), F5(16-18-20-22-24). I purchased B5. The measurements for a sz10 are Bust "32.5", Waist 25", Hip 34.5", Back Waist Length 16 " My real measurements are 38", 33.5", 43", unknown (I haven't measured my back waist length, but I'm 5'10" so it's long). Therefore, I should have purchased pattern sz F5. Sz 18's measurements are closer to my real measurements, 40", 32",42",17". In fact, since my measurements are in between sz 18 and sz 20, I might cut the pattern for sz 20, then cut the fabric down to size during the fitting process. I hope this helps other newbies. Now, I've two patterns that are too small for me. Anyone want them? McCalls M6700 szB5 and Very Easy Vogue V8984 sz B5.
Good evening Mrs. Astar, I was wondering what the name was of the patter that you used and where I could find it. Absolutely love it. Please and thank you @astar’s place
Hi Astar! I simply LOVE you and your videos, very darling and wonderful. I have started my first dress project, but am a bit scared to cut my pattern. I want to make sure i'm doing things correctly :) Luckily, I have some time to create the dress and am not super pressed for time. Perhaps you can help?
EJtheArtist Hello EJ, thank you for your message. By call I mean gmail...or I can do a Skype call. How did your project go? I remember when I first started, but once you've done it once you'll be off like a rocket. For the record, if I had a $$$ for every mistake made, I'd be super rich. What do they say... trail and error all helps in the learning. Love for now Astar
Hey from Texas! Great first video! Just one question. Is there a way to cut the pattern and reuse them for all the sizes available? I have a pattern and 3 little ones and the pattern I'm working with has all of their sizes on it. Would I have to buy separate patterns for each of them?
Can you please make a video about why and how to use those measurement table charts that be on people's sewing table? I have a table (pool table convert) that's 8 ft by 5 ft, should I get a chart just as big as my table, why don't they have curved lines or circular lines on the chart? Wouldn't curves be useful?
Astar, you are not only beautiful but your tutorials easy to follow. So are you btw. I never saw any eggs, that human might be off meds. Hehehe Thank you!!!!
So do you cut right on the line that is for your size, cut a lil extra above your size line or do u cut the whole thing out and only pen at the size you need
+Selena Trevino Hi Selena, you follow the exact line that is marked on the pattern. If it say's size 10 then cut on the size 10 line. This allows for your seam allowance as well Love Astar xxx
Hello :) I am someone who has a bit of experience with sewing simple things but am interested in patterning. I see that you have only cut the size you want, but what if you are someome who would like to make clothes for people of different sizes using the same pattern?
Hello to all the people who have watched this video and the ones who have left comments - please be aware this is for all my friends who have never attempted sewing in there life. I am a beginner for sewing and I need help to become better and I think your great
Hi Rebekah, I am thrilled I could help. My mother taught me how to sew and I'll never be as professional as she was, but once you've got the basic principles locked and loaded & can read the pattern, everything falls into place. I'm very proud of you. Warm regards Astar
This really helped me thanks alot God bless you
This is a good video I really learnd
This is perfect for ppl like me who know nothing! HAHA Thanks for your help :-D
Absolutely love her accent
Hi Astar, what fabric is your green spotty dress made of?
It would be great to learn what fabrics are out there and what best to use them for. I've been sewing for 2 weeks and I'm loving it!
Thanks, Tamara.
i love your videos
You are correct. NZ is home for now.

+Juanita Palomino If your thread gets stuck in what? The fabric or the machine? xxx

Jimmie Carter why what??
Thanks for sharing Astar :)
I'm trying to sew a cover for one of my planes... and, well... Pretty sure I'm gonna sew my fingers together!
Good evening Mrs. Astar, I was wondering what the name was of the patter that you used and where I could find it. Absolutely love it. Please and thank you @astar’s place

Ty for sharing I am a designer to I did my own wedding dress Victorian Cinderella
Hi Astar! I simply LOVE you and your videos, very darling and wonderful. I have started my first dress project, but am a bit scared to cut my pattern. I want to make sure i'm doing things correctly :) Luckily, I have some time to create the dress and am not super pressed for time. Perhaps you can help?
You said to call in this video, though i'm not sure that is still appropriate 3 years later
Love for now Astar
your dress is so fun! love it!
Hey from Texas! Great first video! Just one question. Is there a way to cut the pattern and reuse them for all the sizes available? I have a pattern and 3 little ones and the pattern I'm working with has all of their sizes on it. Would I have to buy separate patterns for each of them?
Thanks bunches! Love ya
Hi there
Can you please make a video about why and how to use those measurement table charts that be on people's sewing table? I have a table (pool table convert) that's 8 ft by 5 ft, should I get a chart just as big as my table, why don't they have curved lines or circular lines on the chart? Wouldn't curves be useful?
Astar, you are not only beautiful but your tutorials easy to follow. So are you btw. I never saw any eggs, that human might be off meds. Hehehe
Thank you!!!!
So do you cut right on the line that is for your size, cut a lil extra above your size line or do u cut the whole thing out and only pen at the size you need
+Selena Trevino Hi Selena, you follow the exact line that is marked on the pattern. If it say's size 10 then cut on the size 10 line. This allows for your seam allowance as well Love Astar xxx
hello, your video is great, where can buy or see those pattern that already made
Yuss you're still alive!!
Please explain how to layout fabric right side/ wrong side when laying out pattern pieces it's so confusing to me !!!!
where did you those sewing patterns?
Hello :) I am someone who has a bit of experience with sewing simple things but am interested in patterning. I see that you have only cut the size you want, but what if you are someome who would like to make clothes for people of different sizes using the same pattern?
