On the inadequacy of Sign

Just some thoughts I felt were important enough to put on the record.
a sign:= anything that is able to lend confidence to some belief.
the inadequacy of a sign:= the inability of a sign, by itself, to produce the beliefs that it is able to lend confidence to.
