    Running a riveted 1542 tracker (about 190lb boat). I have a 13hp Honda sitting in my garage so I'm highly considering the twister xl kit. I don't run mud or much weeds, just shallow rivers and creeks. I want to keep the motor stock for reliability and to be quiet. However, do you recommend removing the governor? Will that help with a few extra RPMs or does the stock 13hp ever even reach Max RPMs? I plan on ordering the kit this week along with the adapter for a two blade prop. Thanks

    • @playinlikejimi
      @playinlikejimi  3 роки тому +1

      Personally I would leave it stock. Everybody knows the governor limits the upper end, but most people don't realize it also cracks the throttle open when starting the motor or if you're idling around and it starts to bog down. Helps prevent the motor from stalling out.
      You can get a few extra RPM by making sure the throttle limit screw is backed or removed completely. This will let you get a little more tension on the governor spring and keep it around 4k RPM. I wouldn't want to remove it because then you start running the risk of floating the valves or having the stock rod give out.

    • @donduck6195
      @donduck6195 3 роки тому

      @@playinlikejimi ok. I'll take your advice. Reliability is key when I'm out with my boys (8,10,12). I'd be tickled shitless with anything even near 4k rpms. Seems like the adapter and a few 2 blades are a must though. Thanks for the quick reply. I hear all kinds of jokers talking about twisters overheating the shaft or breaking. That does not seem to be the case after listening to you and a few others.

      @@playinlikejimi one more question. Is there anything addition I need to buy (other than the adapter/2 blades) that doesn't come with the kit. I know they say it's complete, but you know how it goes.

    • @playinlikejimi
      @playinlikejimi  3 роки тому

      @@donduck6195 nope, the kit will have it all. I have a video how to install it and what tools and materials you'll need. Basic stuff like loctite, thread tape, and paper towels.
      I can't speak for the shafts. The only broken ones I've seen have hit something hard with a stainless prop. I've never broken one and I'm going on about 5 years running them pretty hard. Use an aluminum prop just in case, it's the easiest piece of the whole drive train to fix. As for overheating, I've pushed mine at 4-5k RPM for an hour straight on several occasions with no issues. Sounds like a lack of basic maintenance and not greasing it well enough.

    Great video. I really like the beginning where you show how the trim should be for optimal performance. I’ve been referencing your videos to try and dial mine in and it seems the prop has to be fully submerged atleast 3-4 inches to actually hook up and move the boat reasonably. Only seeing 13 mph max on a twister xl kit with an 8’ prop. Predator 420cc motor and 14’ v hull boat. Any suggestions?

    What’s the advantage to having the twister set up vs a surface drive or long tail or even an outboard?

    • @playinlikejimi
      @playinlikejimi  Рік тому +6

      They all have their advantages. The benefits of each in nutshell:
      Outboard: quiet, smooth, easiest to operate
      Longtail: simplest design, versatile
      Surface Drive: easier to operate than Longtail, more versatile than outboard.
      Cons:
      Outboard: not good for shallow water, mud, weeds, logs, ect
      Longtail: challenging to operate
      Surface Drive: heaviest, more moving parts and maintenance, more parts that can break.
      Twister is a fair balance between Longtail and Surface Drive. Very light, easy to operate, and simple design and maintenance.

      @playinlikejimi  3 роки тому

      Yea, I'd say so. I took a customer out to test drive one. I put it on his boat and I put a longtail on mine. It was his first time driving any kind of mud motor and after he was familiar with it we went on a ride through some pretty thick woods. He was following me for a while and once it got real tight, he ended up passing me because the longtail couldn't turn as tight and I kept bumping into trees and getting hung up.
      As a first timer, it was pretty simple for him to get through with the twister. Although with timber, I can't stress it enough to run an aluminum prop. It's an easy 2 minute fix as opposed to breaking a driveshaft.

    • @playinlikejimi

      @@40mdeep I have the Jackplate for 2 main reasons. Most importantly I need it for the surface drive models. They sit too low and you get a lot of transom splash. Hopefully I'll get some videos of those soon, but I need to order some bigger props first.
      Secondly for the twister, it hits the sides as you try to spin it around. Having a Jackplate is a lot more convenient than lifting it off the transom. For the twister I can't say there's much of a performance benefit that I noticed.
      I'll have more adjustable jackplates ready this week. Email me at GunnersHide@gmail.com if you're interested in buying one.

    • @playinlikejimi
      @playinlikejimi  3 роки тому +1

      @@40mdeep actually, a really noticable difference I've seen with the twister and Jackplate is how easy it is to get the prop out of the water when slowing down or coming to a stop since it sits higher.
      I forgot when I drove around without it, it was hard to get the prop past the surface unless you were almost stopped because the wake catches up with you, but also the back of the boat drops down. With the motor higher, it's easier to get it out of the water faster.
      Not a nessesity, but pretty convenient.
