Fantastic coaching advice. I used to race motorcycles and the principal of looking out of the corner is identical. Your body always follows the eyes frame of reference

Agreed! There are several similarities between skiing and motorcycle riding, vision, balance, and body position.

I too use the cycling analogy. Bikers and skiers will go where they look. Don't stare at the tree or the person!

I have this issue of looking down, even when walking, so I’ve been working on maintaining posture and eyesight up. Thanks for the tips.

@@DarrenTurnerSkiing absolutely stellar work, not just the ski instruction, but the storytelling and all it encompasses (filming, editing, directing (even just yourself)) so so many skills are coming together. The quality of your videos speaks volumes about your skills in many areas. Thank you!!! And please keep up the stellar work :)

Strangely enough, I spent the first two days of this summer when I was mountain biking, just thinking about this. That set me up for one of the best summers from a riding point of you I think I've had .😀😀

Thank you for the tips! I'm a huge Rossignol fan, just like you. I've invested in all my gear from Rossignol, although I know it won't magically make me a better skier; I simply love their products.

Thanks again for your excellent content. Funny how riding a motorcycle crosses over some skills into skiing. One instructor told me be like a fly fisherman looking where you’re casting but also scanning forward and backward to where you’re going.
    Nice jacket as well.

Super video series! I'm trying to get from "upper-begginer" to an intermediate-ish level and your videos have been very useful. I'm writing down key notes from them and I'm going to put these tips into practice on my local mountain. Thank you very much for creating this content.

So true, I used to look at moguls one at a time & end up with over-rotation & stop start. Once I looked down the hill, the flow was much improved.

@@DarrenTurnerSkiing I did! It was so awesome, I went from beginner having trouble on blue to easily going down red slopes and even blacks (not so easy) partly because of your videos in the two weeks I was in Austria!
I noted all your tips down and when I was on the lift I read my notes, picked one tip and tried applying it. Did it all day for a few days. Especially the looking down the slope tip helped me, but also the don’t lean to much forward (just center) and be flexible.
Things just clicked. Now feeling like I’m hitting a plateau tho. I’m not really comfortable on rough terrain with huge bumps (moguls?) in it, and I have no idea yet how to ever learn that! Seems impossible😅

As a ski and bike instructor, I fully concur, especially the not looking down at your material (skis or bike). I usually tell the pupils their skis or bikes are with them all the time, so no need te check...😅

As an instructor for new skiers I stress this point from the beginning. Looking down isn't just a head movement it's the entire upper body.

    • @DarrenTurnerSkiing

I really wanna make a film about separation as it's a common misconception.✌️

  • @xbeautifulthings

When you say look down the hill, do you mean just with your eyes or with your upper body too

    • @DarrenTurnerSkiing
      @DarrenTurnerSkiing  6 місяців тому

Focus on your head looking down you want a calm upperbody, but it doesn't need to be 100% facing down the hill all the time.

Very useful series Darren, extremely well made videos and very high definition. You almost nailed this at 3:12 to 3:20 in the Video but it is still a little vague. Might I suggest: ua-cam.com/video/1mCdMezMypE/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared. Just gives the skier a definite point of reference & I found that the "exaggeration" works wonders, but that just might be me. All the best.
