I love this conversation. I’m a dog behaviorist so I study canine (and human because it often relates) cognition and neuroscience. It’s truly fascinating how we learn, remember make connections and feel.
Learning theory is the same for all animals including humans but at an individual level we all learn best in different ways.

I couldn’t love this video more. I struggled all through school because I was so much better at the social aspect, as opposed to the memorization that was necessary to get better grades. However, I always had my nose in a book from when I was a young child, and that taught me more about history and vocabulary that I ever learned in a class. Travel and meeting people from other cultures and being in nature, as you do, is a education in itself. If we are aware, we will learn. You both are stretching your minds every day, with your interests and passion for a beautiful life. Well done!

As a teacher, in the United States, I absolutely resonate with you and the way you were as a child in school. Children come in all different colors and all different learning styles and you have to be really adaptable as a teacher to make sure that you are giving them what they need. For example, I had a teacher that I talk with and she was extremely good with math so the children that were average and above average went to her and I was always struggling with math so I knew what it was like and I could understand children that were struggling in math so I took the ones that were struggling. I love that you are very honest about it and I love what you’ve done on your own and I’m sure they were a few mentors along the way! I appreciate your honesty thank you

What you were talking about is so true. I see it in my 2 kids daily, the one is diligent, loves to study and retain facts, the other one is more artistic and can remember a song after listening to it once. They are both incredibly smart but in different ways. The school system only caters to the one, so the other is always struggling at school. I wish, as you say that they'd assess kids and adapt the teaching to what they respond to best.

I have not commented before but this was so true. Being "clever" at school was absolutely all about retaining information and answering questions relating to that information without necessarily understanding it. I started really learning about the things I am interested in AFTER I left school. Have to agree that debating is really interesting. Loving the bee content. x
This reminds me of my childhood with my grandmother. After she used to let me at school, I would cry and make a drama because she was leaving me there. But, then later after the school I used to go straight to swim at the river with my colleagues stressing my grandmother that was looking for me. I used to be very social at school and knew everyone in the village. They thought that I wouldn’t make it on life. Ohhh well, after few years I managed to finish high school, bachelor degree, post graduate diploma and master. I have the same age as you guys, already have a house etc. To be honest, you don’t need to go to Uni to be successful professionally. I spend so much money and time that at the end it wasn’t really useful. I work in something totally different from my background studies and can’t believe how much I manage to accomplish in life. I used to have people that used to look at me like I was a dump person and goods know what…Now the same people are literally not even better than me. So, at the end we all are build differently and are constantly growing and improve ourselves in this pathway of life. We need to choose our own happiness and be grateful and happy with what we accomplish in life and what more has to come. You guys are amazing!!

Thanks for sharing your conversation on education- I think you both highlighted a lot of valid points. People do learn differently. The four main types are: visual, auditory, kinaesthetic and reading/ writing. School does indeed seem to study reading/ writing.
I would say however that success in academia depends on more than just a good memory. I’m a history student studying for a master’s at Oxford University. History as a subject is so information dense that it’s IMPOSSIBLE to rely on your memory alone. In fact, the more I study, the more I realise that learning and developing the skill of finding the right information, and engage with it critically, is more important. If you can hone research skills you can learn almost anything to a high standard in a relatively short amount of time.
Another primary skill is writing. Essay writing in particular is often hailed as the highest form of communication because a good essay should be evidenced, critical, balanced, precise, and objective.
I’m sure there are lots of experts out there that could speak about this more eloquently than I have, and it may well differ from subject to subject. Just here to share a different viewpoint based on my different experiences. Thanks for the great video Ali 👍

But the point was -- how amazing would it be if all school systems catered to a variety of strengths and different brain activity for young minds! :)
When you are ready to learn, your teacher will appear. What a lad - being vulnerable and transparent, which reflects sense of self and confidence. The frontal lobe of the brain prunes or revises after school, which can affect individual readiness and the ability to attend, persist and delay gratification too. Sounds like you had high emotional intelligence.

Ali, you have hit the nail on the head! Academia is not the only route to success. Lord Sugar & Richard Branson do not have O'levels, cse's or gcse's!
There are three primary types of learning: auditory, visual & kinesthetic (practical learning). Unfortunately, the curriculum for government funded schools does not cater to all styles of learning. 😢
Please take comfort from knowing that the English language is one of the harder languages to learn to read, write, and spell, owing to all of the graphemes in our vocabulary. For example: aw, or, au, ore, all make the same sound when spoken as they are in their grapheme form, but as children, they have to learn which two, or three letter grapheme appears in which word in order to read or spell it correctly - saw, tore, caught, and before!!!

It's a beautiful language when spoken properly and with our many different dialects in the UK😊Ironically incorporating others including e.g. Latin. I understand we all have different approaches to learning however some of school is about learning discipline and conforming. For many education begins on leaving academia! I just hope the curriculum has improved since my schooling there should be more emphasis on life skills. Richard Branson also suffers with Dyslexia...

We do all learn differently, and it’s too bad the educational system doesn’t figure that out when kids are younger.
School is a glorified babysitting service for older kids and it keeps the future kids poor as they won't teach real world information and they definitely don't inspire for industry and careers
Govt need to give more resources.
As a teacher working for over a decade I can confirm the education system does not work for many of our young people. It’s sad that we put our young people through a system that has no benefit to them and wastes many years of their life. We need an educational reform but that can only come with a political reform. Until then we will keep failing so many.
I had this same conversation a few days ago and I completely agree with you both. I myself was never academic, because I just didn't fit the learning mould - yet I've gone on to succeed in many things. My son has just finished his GCSE'S, and whilst I encouraged him to try, I've also let him know that it's not the be all end all. I feel it just gives you more options - it doesn't mean to say you/he won't be successful. More importantly, his happiness is something successful, and so thats the priority I feel. I want that to guide him in life, and most people forget to mention this, and it's so important. Children have to be sheep, and the older I get the more I realise this. I encourage my kids to freely think, and I feel strongly about this. Even if they make mistakes, there's lessons to be learned there and to grow from it. Common sense is also intelligence in my eyes, because it allows you to adapt and problem solve. Also, being personable, manners, and kindness are forms of intelligence - some may say it's not, but it really is. It's all things that have helped me in life. There's more to life than grades, and so many more children/adults would thrive in different settings, if only the educational system was more flexible. I could chat for ages about this, but I shall stop there 😊
Emotional intelligence does exist and your friends are wrong. A person being kind, empathetic and thoughtful is a sign of good character and why doctors are trained to be that way with patients. 😊

I was valedictorian and I can tell you - it didn't really matter to many people and you're way more successful than me and most people. Remember Mozart didn't talk til he was 3 years old. Ignore the others. You guys inspire me to learn

Really enjoyed listening to you guys chat about education and the school system! I am a Home Educating mom of 3 boys. We made the decision to Home Educate as our boys were growing increasingly unhappy in the mainstream school environment. We love the freedom we now have to learn about the things that interest us and inspire us. We also get to enjoy more of the great outdoors as opposed to being confined to a stuffy classroom. Mainstream Ed is a “one size fits all” approach and it just does not serve everybody. My brother is a great example - he hated school, left with barely any qualifications. Eventually found his passion and is now running a very successful company employing hundreds of people. The high school drop out now employing those with degrees! The irony!

I wished there were more auditory and spatial learning frameworrks coming up in school, because those are the most effective ways for me to learn. I still earned three degrees successfully in the conventional format, but just imagine how much better I could've done. And many others likely.

i agree so much!! Children learn in so many different ways. Creatives do not learn the same way as others. Kids with the gift of ADHD/Dyslexic who learn to think outside the box needs completely new ways to learn.
Wow... I so, so, so relate to your story about being ready to learn at a LATER age and stage in life. I dropped out of school when I was 16 for a number of reasons. Eventually as the years progressed, I went to Uni as a mature aged student and completed a Bach of Bus (Mgt) and Grad Dip in HR Mgt and a Masters of HR Mgt to compliment.8 Dip's in business disciplines. I genuinely believe that some people (me included) are naturally late bloomers. I love your vlog and Lydia's a great deal. On so many levels I relate to your lifestyle today. It's the impulse control located in the frontal lobe that does not mature until we're 25 and yes - you're right - they want us to make life long decisions before we're 25. It's why we all make such not-so-good decisions while we're young. Excellent video. Enjoyed it very much. Thank you.
I just found your channel as it just showed up as a sugestion for me. I said this exact same thing my entire life and my husband and I just had this conversation again last night! I totally agree with you both on learning and Intelligence verses ability for memory recall! Love your channel! I look forward to catching up on all that I have missed lol
We also keep bees using the Flow Hive 2 products. We find them to be wonderful homes for our 2 colonies. We are in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. We have not harvested honey yet. For the first year, we had only one hive and they needed time to get established. We added another colony, but that winter we had some below zero temperatures and the smaller colony did not survive. Last year we were away in the spring when the nectar flow was greatest. We did not want to take honey from the bees late in the season. Perhaps we will harvest some honey this spring. Meanwhile, we have enjoyed caring for the bees and having them to pollinate our gardens. I highly recommend the Flow Hive products. The company is great to deal with, and they support world wide efforts to promote habitat. Good luck with your beekeeping efforts!

Yesssss!!!! You are speaking my heart. There are most certainly many different learning styles. My son, for example, struggled having to sit at a desk in a structured classroom. His 4th grade year he had an amazing teacher who allowed the kids to do their work anywhere in the classroom as long as their work got done. Justin loved laying on his stomach out in the quiet hallway. He scored perfect marks. I fought kindly for him so his learning style was embraced.
Ali…..you are right on in saying one doesn’t need to be a straight A student to be successful.
My husband scraped by to graduate High School. He is now the Vice President of a multi billion dollar company called Fastenal.

This was a great one! Most people I meet tell me that I’m very smart but they would never guess that I had terrible grades in school lol
What I have is a ton of different perspectives (I lived in many different countries), I’m open-minded and empathetic…that goes a very long way in both personal and professional relationships. I wish I’d spent less time equating my self worth with school grades! We are all very valuable for different reasons.

Had you been more academically inclined, it is likely that you would not have the ability to visualize & create as you do. There are things creatives can do to improve vocabulary & such but a person who has no ability to imagine something into existence cannot really learn that skill. It’s when we all get together & use our strengths in collaboration that greatness is achieved. Thank you for sharing your gift.

Love watching your vlogs especially this one as I can so relate with my son who is now an electrician. He also didn’t do too well in school but right at the end of school he was given a prize from the head year students for being the most liked student and an all rounder.
I love seeing you guys just talk ! It reminds me of me and my boyfriend just speaking about a deeper topic just before bed ! I suck at learning because I cannot sit still for too long so audio learning would be of benefit because it would allow me to multitask ! During lectures I’d listen to the professor speak while I would draw in my notebook and I retained all the information well enough to not have to study to get a B + - it was wonderful. Being in school now as an adult it’s just as tough

I agree that the education system needs an overhaul. Yes there is an aspect of memorising answers. However, at certain institutions you’re expected to research, analyse and form your own arguments. One of the key marking components is whether a student presents a unique argument. I am talking as a university admissions officer. It depends on the university and the degree.
You learn something new every day and that’s the way life is take care keep smiling and enjoying your life together. As always Lumi make you smile and laugh 🙏🏻,

You can do several learning styles assessments online, for yourself or your child! I used to use them in my class to take an inventory, and also to coach my students (high school and college age) on how best to tailor their own learning to their strengths and preferences.
At my university I was able to take classes with part time professors who worked in the industry I was studying. The practical conversations we had made all the difference in my future choices. Honestly, the best classes were more about talking and actually doing projects than memorizing. Some of us are just doers and I wouldn’t change it!
I totally agree! If I could listen to a book, I prefer it and it completely changes everything! I’m a teacher in the US. It’s not always the people that were A students that are successful. So often, creatives are not perfect students, great conversation. ❤
I could listen to you chatting all night long 🤗, I can’t read a book in paper form … a few pages and my eyes are tired and I’m going to sleep .
This was a huge problem at school, I was given a Kindle for my birthday when they first came out and it was a game changer for me 🥰.
So much so I love reading now , it’s one of my favourite things to do . Since I got the Kindle with the back light there is no stopping me.
I love keeping up with how the bees are doing, the hive looks gorgeous as much as I love the colour green ..I do love the natural wood.
Although I have seen many hives painted white🤔.

This subject resonates with me profoundly. You both said it so well that sitting down reading/memorizing is exactly that. When I was in school, this was basically the foundation of how I was taught and I never did well in those settings. Thank goodness for more artistic classes as thats where I was able to redeem myself with my grades. Although, in the end I dropped out of high school and never went back. But now, I have a successful career making more money than I know what to do with. I knew from a very early age, that typical school setting would never be for me. I learn best by actually doing.

I agree with everything you guys said! I've always been great at languages and real crap at math/ chemistry...But now as an adult, I'm choosing to read a ton of books on physics and cosmology because I'm really interested. But back then when they were forcing me to do that...not a chance!

I hope you do NOT paint the bee hive system. Is there such a thing as having too much green? The flow hive wood is beautiful. It matches your shed. It's wonderful that you are caring for these important pollinators. I hope that you can give us a monthly hive update.
