  • IDAHO FALLS - What happens to a body after someone dies and is taken to a funeral home?
    It’s a question most of us don’t think about until a loved one passes away, but now many are asking it after 12 decomposed bodies and 50 fetuses were found inside Downard Funeral Home in Pocatello last week.
    Brian Wood is the owner of Wood Funeral Home, a family-run business that’s been in Idaho Falls since 1911. He was shocked to learn about Downard as there are laws mandating how funeral homes should operate.
    “The state of Idaho requires a human body, within 24 hours that a funeral home has them under their care, to either be refrigerated or embalmed,” Wood tells EastIdahoNews.com. Between their different buildings, Wood Funeral Home’s refrigeration units can hold up to 60 bodies.
    When someone dies, family members notify the funeral home if they intend to have their loved one buried or cremated. The deceased person is picked up and taken to the funeral home, where it is refrigerated or embalmed - a chemical process to treat the body so it will be preserved for viewing.
    If there are no plans for public viewing, the body remains in refrigeration until the county coroner reviews the death certificate and gives authorization for cremation or burial. Sometimes funeral homes receive bodies after they have been dead for some time.
    “We have had some calls where the person has passed away and they’ve been gone for several days before anyone knows or is notified,” Wood says. “It takes about a week to get cremated, so we will get special permission from our coroner to speed up the cremation process (on decomposing bodies).”
    As the popularity of cremation has increased, Wood Funeral Home opened Eagle Rock Crematory East in Ammon two years ago. It’s used every day, and bodies are tracked from the moment they arrive until ashes are handed off to family members.
    “All information is put in a computer, and a small metal disc tag accompanies the body from beginning to end,” Crematory Operations Manager Nicole Keller says. “We’re tracking it the whole time so people can feel more comfortable that we are properly taking care of their loved ones.”
    When a person is ready to be cremated, the body is placed in a container and loaded onto a lift. The lift is raised up a metal door on the side of the retort, the chamber where the actual cremation takes place. The body is loaded into the retort, and the metal door closes.
    In Eagle Rock Crematory East, family members can watch the entire process through a window. If they want, they can push a button that closes the retort door and begins the cremation.
    “The temperature can vary once the cremation has started from 1,500 degrees up to 2,000 degrees,” Keller says. “A cremation can take anywhere from 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on the size of the person. We have a computer that monitors every aspect of the cremation.”
    Once the cremation is finished, workers use two large scraping and rake tools to remove the remains from the retort. The remains are transferred to a processing room, where any metal body parts ( are removed. Once finished in the processing room, the ashes are placed in an urn and given to the deceased’s loved ones.
    It’s unclear if all of the decomposing bodies in Downard Funeral Home were meant to be cremated, but at least one was. Charlotte Mygrant died Aug. 17 and her sister, Eva Bode, tells EastIdahoNews.com she had arranged cremation with Lance Peck, Downard’s owner. It never happened.
    Idaho State University announced Thursday the 50 fetuses found at Downard were part of a decades-old biology collection turned over to the funeral home in 2017.
    “A lot of people don’t realize how often people are losing a child - usually through stillbirth,” Wood says. “We’re at EIRMC or Mountain View a few times a month helping families. We handle (those deaths) basically the same way. The baby is transferred to the funeral home and then goes into refrigeration with the rest of the deceased.”
    Many funeral homes, including Wood, offer complimentary cremation or burial services for stillborn babies. Sometimes the family chooses to donate the remains to science or research institutions.
    Wood says the situation with Downard Funeral Home raises many questions, but it is a reminder of how vital it is for funeral homes to be open and honest with their customers.
    “I think it’s very important, for the sake of trust and transparency, to always allow them to be involved as they want to be,” he explains.

    Wood Funeral Home has always been a reputable, sincere, compassionate place who truly cares about the lost loved one and their family. In the depression era in the 1930s my grandparents lost their first born to a staph infection from a little scratch he got on his cheek, when he was 2-3 years old. My grandpa went to the owner of Wood Funeral Home and said, This is my little boy, but I've only got $10 in my pocket." The owner placed his hand on Grandpa's shoulder and said, "Preston, we will take care of your little boy." To save money, Grandpa and his brother built a little pine box for little Clyde, then put the make-shiff casket in the back seat of their car and took him to Wood Funeral Home and they took care of the rest, both physically and monetarily. That exceptional they took of my grandparents and that little boy has carried on from generation to generation in the Wood family. We will be forever grateful.

      In different parts of the world, cremated remains are not processed (pulverized) and are returned just as they are when they are removed from the retort (cremation chamber).
      If your husband was cremated in the United States, it is standard practice that the cremated remains be processed though it is not, to my knowledge, a legal requirement in the state in which I practiced for 16 years (Texas).
      All of that said, in my experience I personally only saw unprocessed cremated remains when the cremation had been done in Asia.

    Funeral directors and their staff have the toughest job in the world! They deal with emotionally stressed customers daily, imbalmers deal with the gross part of making a dead person look presentable. I always assumed it paid well. I had to make arrangements for my son 2 weeks ago. The funeral director said they need help at his place. Everyone is afraid to work around dead people because of the pandemic. If anyone would like that type of work, there are job openings. Imbalmers would need a degree and license but greeters and office people probably just have to be nice and have nice clothes.

Yes I am an Open Mic guitarist. When I'm done being cremated, I want my ashes to be swept up into the sound hole of my acoustic guitar. Though there is no viewing, decomposition can pose other problems particularly if the casket that is selected does not seal.

      @@billchambersmarquez1964 true, they wouldn't "feel" it because they are dead, but wouldn't you agree taking a trochar and poking the outside of a body is abuse or slapping the body is abuse? They can't feel it. I understand embalming is to preserve the body until the loved ones can get there to say goodbye, but it is very harsh process using very harsh chemicals. That is my understanding of it. Admittedly, I'm not an expert at embalming as I am a nurse 🏥

    I read that people whether cremated or buried will remain dead and totally unconscious until Jesus comes again and resurrect the righteous to eternal life. Ecclesiastes 9:5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

If you have already paid for your cremation and made arrangements for the disposition . Its just crazy that there is such a long wait .Should be no difference in cremation or ground burial.

    • @steelerfan1933
      @steelerfan1933 2 роки тому +2

      The difference is that cremation cannot be undone, should further investigation be necessary into the cause or manner of death.
      Therefore, the proper legal authorities must sign off saying that they know without a doubt how the person passed away.

      You can totally have a private family viewing without embalming (usually that means around 5 people coming in to visit a loved one) but he is talking about a public viewing, in that case you% need embalming, the funeral home would be breaking the law if they didn't embalm. Its a public health concern.

    • @melisa8256
      @melisa8256 2 роки тому +6

      @@shannon9247 No it’s not a public health concern. It’s a money issue and a funeral home lie. There isn’t any harm that can come from a dead person who’s not been embalmed. Unless your relative dies from Ebola it’s perfectly safe.

    • @shannon9247
      @shannon9247 2 роки тому +12

      The laws are different in every state I'm guessing, but it my state embalming is required for a public viewing at a funeral. When my dad died this year I came in and viewed him before his cremation and he was not embalmed since it was just a private family viewing. Funeral Home didn't lie to us, I chose a service that didn't require embalming, which you have a right to do so as a customer. If you don't want embalming don't choose services that require it
