    Fun fact: the picture of the mountaineering guy at 3:30 used to be involved with Nirvana before they made it big. He supplied them with the money to purchase studio time to record their first album, “Bleach”, and was credited as a rhythm guitarist although he did not perform on the album. He toured with Nirvana in support of “Bleach” where he played rhythm guitar and is pictured on the album cover. He later joined the army because he wanted to be,” part poet, part philosopher, part warrior”. Pretty cool and interesting person.

    Is it possible to have videos on what actually these missions are about? Things like layman explanation on "direct assault", "unconventional warfare", "foreign internal defense", "special recon"?
    Thank you for all your videos.

    • @IWLDELJ
      @IWLDELJ 6 років тому +118

      A video would be cool, but if you're just after explanations, I can give that. These are over simplified in some cases, but they are more ideas than rules, so try to think of them like a generic spectrum.
      Direct action (not direct assault) just means combat patrol tasks, like seizing terrain.
      Counter insurgency means attempting to shut down insurgent forces. I know that's obvious, but what makes it COIN is the method, they try to cut it at its core, it's almost like police anti-drug work, you investigate, shut down their supplies, try to ween them off of the program, etc.
      Foreign humanitarian assistance is exactly how it sounds, it's giving aid to people in need. This is also important for counter insurgency operations and for the unconventional warfare mission.
      Foreign internal defense means training allied government forces.
      Special reconnaissance means recon for special operations, different from conventional close or deep recon mostly in that instead of supporting conventional action, they are supporting covert actions, things like lasing for air strikes in Libya while saying, "we don't have troops on the ground," shit like that.
      Unconventional warfare is the primary purpose of USASF, it's their reason for existing. In simplest terms, unconventional warfare is almost the opposite of counter insurgency and foreign internal defense, as it is the embedding, training, and utilization of unconventional partner forces in a theater as a force multiplier. Basically... it's building a guerrilla or insurgent force that you like to fight a force you don't like.
      Did this answer your questions?

      @@jay_actual Same, it's been 2 years since I left. It took me a while to get everything, as far as paperwork, squared away but if you're patient it shouldn't be a problem. I'm prior service Marine Corps and I know Marines wont have to do basic again. But I'm pretty sure that if you're prior service you wont start from the beginning. I think you'll get thrown somewhere into OSUT depending on your prior service background. For example, Marines might get thrown into the later weeks of OSUT while a sailor might start in the earlier weeks of OSUT. I could be wrong, things could've changed, but that's what I know now. The only thing my recruiter told me was that I wont do basic again. Everything else I researched on my own. I hope that helps brother.

I’m interested to hear your thoughts on the ‘rest days’ people advise you to take so that muscles aren’t in a constant state of tearing vs your experience in the military where training appears to be constant, especially in the more extreme scenarios like Ranger school? Is Ranger school healthy training at all? Or is it really meant as a painful lesson in humility to toughen you mentally in actual fact considered very unhealthy physical exercise?

If you're someone who will grind out the toughest shit, and embrace the suckiest of suck to get where you want, not only will you will make it, you'll be successful. But that's all on you, and if you're not sure if you want it or not you won't get far. @TheCCBoi 6 років тому +1

      KUUIPO GRACE not true anymore, the new brigade structure means national guard training has tripled and guard units now have similar deploy schedules as active duty. The National Guard is tactical - meaning combat focused units and higher deployment cycles.
      Special operations, UAS and Intel units in the NG are attached to states but technically are owned by the Federal government -not the states. They are considered too vital or sensitive to be solely controlled but the state (Even though the state has a large say in how and where they’re used).
      The Army Reserves acts as support for active duty units - that’s why the reserve MOSs are mostly supply, support and logistics units.

    I know I’ve asked this before, but I’m going to ask again, since I highly doubt that I’m the only one curious about this.
    Can you do a video (or more than one if needed) explaining all enlisted 18-series MOS individually and compared them to specific non-Special Forces MOS? Here's what I think I've based on my own research and analysis, but I could be wrong;
    -18B (Special Forces Weapons Sergeant) to well, my best guess would be 11B (Infantryman)
    -18C (Special Forces Engineer Sergeant) to obviously 12B (Combat Engineer)
    -18D (Special Forces Medical Sergeant) to obviously 68W (Combat Medic Specialist)
    -18E (Special Forces Communications Sergeant) to 25C (Radio Operator-Maintainer)
    -18F (Special Forces Intelligence Sergeant) to obviously one of the 35-series MOS, which is military intelligence

    What is a job like this you can do with asthma? SWAT? HRT? Anything similar to those as well? Does anyone in the military, Law Enforcement, or CIA know of any roles similar to being a Green Beret but allow you to use asthma medication?
    If there are roles you know of but ARE NOT allowed to talk about them could you point me in the right direction?
    Thank you for your time.

    With the Warrant Officer community being so small, and the SF community being so small, is there really enough SF WO's walking around for each ODA to get one?

    • @nelsonfitness8242

    • @cm-pr2ys
      @cm-pr2ys 5 років тому +3

      I think they’re the XO’s of ODA’s right? Anyway, I’d like to add a side note that moving up to not only a Special Forces unit in a Operator role, but, as a Warrant Officer is a great quality of life/ career progression tool, as becoming a Commissioned Officer is something entirely different, whereas when you’re a Warrant, you get to specialize without having to worry about really commanding anything. Many enlisted that want to stay in 20 plus look to move up and rank up (more money, more responsibility, and even better treatment) as a Warrant Officer for that very reason. As long as you’re okay with the increased responsibilities and can pass the SF Warrant Officer course, you’d be making more money in the long run. Money talks. Guys might just get out if they feel they can get paid more for their hard work elsewhere. In this aspect, the Army got it right. MARSOC should have Warrant Officer positions too, but if you know anything about the Marine Corps you know they’re very slow to improve anything “ quality of life” related. Maybe that hurts retention of MARSOC Marines.

    I know the typical process for MOS switching in the Big Army, but what is (if there is one) the process for MOS switching within 18 series? Like say an 18b decides to go 18d, or something akin to that. And does an 18-series have to go through all of the pipeline again if they go officer?

  • @resolute123
    @resolute123 5 років тому

    How do operators in the NG are able to maintain their skill sets? I would image it's difficult since it's not their main profession. Also, if a SF soldier went through the SF pipeline first, why do some attend the Ranger school afterwards? They already have leadership skill if the qualified SF. Met a few SF guys who said their SGM sent them to Ranger school. Aside points and pride, why?

    I haven’t been able to find a video comparing Navy Seals and SF based on their missions and tasks. All you find is who’s better. I know there is a huge difference but anyone able to tell me what both do side by side? Or primarily what Navy Seals do compares to this. Because counter insurgency sounds like something Seals would do besides one of their obvious missions counter terrorism. Which if I’m correct is just direct assault on a terrorist unit or dispatch regarding a immediate threat. But I’ve also heard Delta is responsible for counter terrorism?
