The concrete buildings at 9:55 were the gunpowder section
their was 3 large roller Mills the only ones left in the UK and they were cut up for scrap

Was there a few days ago but couldn't figure out how to get into the place? The locals used to call this place "the bomb factory" a nice place...good video of it...thanks for sharing!

Easiest way in is via the todhill nature reserve, follow the path you will find gaps in the fences, sometimes need to avoid guys workimg at the quarry but generally they leave you alone, the place is massive though, something like 14 square miles in total, good bit of ayrshires history right there my dad worked there for 25 years it was like a town in itself, hopefully you can go back and get a better look around next time

if they had not shut us down, i would never have left. we worked together, socialised, played and even married each other.

Towns nearby benefited so much from ICI, shame we have lost all of that.

Hi this is a great video. How can I contact you to discuss re-use of the footage? My PhD is on the Ardeer, so this is great to see!

Would like to have seen inside the mounds where the women worked, what were those red brick houses type buildings for would have been better with a bit of explanation going overcut .

Do you know if that bridge is crossable on a cycle?

One of the bridges IS crossable on a cycle, I have done it on several occasions since 2020. The longer bridge - further down The Garnock, towards Irvine harbour area IS NOT crossable on a bike (but you can do it on foot - you have to shimmie along the outside of the barriered-off sections at each end though). The shorter bridge - up closer to Stevenston & Kilwinning is the one you can take your bike across, although quite heavily barricaded on the Stevenston side. They put huge lumps of bricks, earth, trees, cement etc. at that end of the bridge as a barrier to everything but mainly for vehicles probably but you can get a bike over it. I've cycled a fair bit on both sides of the river, always crossing that bridge. But both sides are also accessible from elsewhere too of course, for example down through Irvine Golf Club (Bogside) leads eventually to a path that takes you to the east side of the bridge. Nice forest trails on the east side & also lots of ponds & lots of old explosives magazine buildings & other explosives related buildings etc. Utterly fascinating area - & huge! Good on foot or on a bike. Enjoy!
