ok so fun fact the imperial system developed over time through artisans-it's a measuring system that makes sense when you need measurements that don't require perfect accuracy but do require the ability to be kept in the head, especially if one is illiterate (which most people were!!). 3 is the largest number most people can reliably hold in their heads. so imperial developed as a base-12 system, not base-10. 12 is easily divisible through simple fractions, and those units often divide into quarters because they follow the rule of 4 units of measurement=new measurement. take baking! 3 cups is 3 cups, but 4 cups is a quart. 3 quarts is 3 quarts, but 4 quarts is a gallon. and so on. this applies to inches too, which divide into 4 as the standard. it's fascinating stuff once you get into it, but anyway all this to say there's a historical reason why your brain prefers imperial!

@@hildywaddington8708 oooh I'm gonna have to source some of this wondrous American wrapping paper. It makes so much sense, because you could then easily cut in straight lines! Hahaha how funny about the numerical systems.
I'm 68, and I read Anne of Green Gables when I was 13, in 1969. It was my favorite childhood book, along with The Boxcar Children, which I read when I was 6. Your dress and pinafore are darling, and very well made! 🧡
My very first "real" book I read on my own at age 7. My mum was so patient, giving me definitions of all the words I'd never seen before - eventually, she gave me a dictionary, which was a game-changer. What a lot I learned from Anne! Still adore her character.
The entire book series is something to invest time and money into, it's a thousand times better than the movies, I promise. Wait until you meet Anne's children! Such darlings. And when Marilla adopts Dora and Davy the twins, long after Anne has grown up and left home. Theres a part with Davy that I think of so often, with him checking the roots of his plants to see how much they've grown. Its hilarious. The books are so special and if you do decide to read the entire series, I would love to hear your thoughts on them in future sewing videos. This is where true Kindred Spirits lay.
I LOVE this. You have inspired me as a great grandma of 2, 8 year old girls, to make them a dress and pinafore and purchase the Anne of Green Gables book for each one. So fun. Thank you for sharing your talent and ideas.
That's so cute!! Please (at least eventually) get them all 8 books - I loved them growing up and I can't wait to read them to my future children :) I hope your great granddaughters love them as much as I did
I absolutely love Anne Of Green Gables too! I have watched the 1985 trilogy thousands of times during my childhood and now as an adult. Anne just makes my heart ache with happiness. I am currently re reading the books and Lucy Maud Montgomery’s descriptive writing is absolutely beautiful. I’m from British Columbia, Canada, and wish to visit Prince Edward Island one day. One of my favourite quotes from her books is this…”It was November-the month of crimson sunsets, parting birds, deep, sad hymns of the sea, passionate wind-songs in the pines. Anne roamed through the pine land alleys in the park and, as she said, let that great sweeping wind blow the fogs out of her soul.” ♥️ I couldn’t think of a favourite scene because I love every single one haha!!
I got to meet Megan Follows a few years ago, and let me tell you, I nearly wept with joy. She was the kindest, loveliest human, and MY Anne. I am so happy to see a UA-camr giving these amazing films some love.
I love this!!! Fellow Anne aspirer here and I am absolutely devouring every drop of your content! I watched this last night after putting my two boys to sleep while working on a little sewing project - which deeply humbled me - but! so many valuable lessons learnt!
I just started my first foray into sewing and had to come watch this after your Anne reference in your "stop brainrot" video haha. I didn't even know there was a movie trilogy, but I read (and reread) the whole 8 book shebang as a kid. My favorite children's series for sure. The final work looks amazing! Love all the detail with the finish and definitely inspired me to dive deeper into making my own clothes.

I noticed when you started cutting your skirt out, there’s a better way of cutting that I could let you know. After you get your fabric folded, don’t hold the scissors on top the way you did. You left a curly edge on the bottom. Hold your scissors sideways so that they are truly at the spot where the two sides come together. Put a little slight pressure there as you push the scissors through, and you will end up with two flat sides that are perfectly cut in half. If your scissors are really sharp, doing it that way you don’t even need to open and close them, they will just slide through. Just a little tip that I have learned that makes my fabric lay flatter and need less ironing. You are doing very well with this, and I was quite impressed with your French seams and your finishing of that slit. You go girl.
that down ward creasing is happening because the angle of the sleeve hole is too shallow for the arm scye/ armhole. its also fully up to you if its a problem or not! getting rid of the excess fabric wont always reduce mobility so if i can do it ill try and get rid of any excess draping but some times i just dont feel like it. just because you know the cause of a a certain draping on the body, doesnt mean ur obligated to fix it
You are just so adorable. I love the way you work through what you are going to do. I am a little old woman who still loves to sew as much now as I did when I first learned 70 years ago. I also like that you iron what you are making. So many people choose not to. It makes an immense difference in your garments. Keep doing a great job. You are delightful to watch. Thank you.

I’m a grandmother and we watched and fell in love with the movies when my daughter was a pre-teen. I have always loved those movies, and it’s impossible to pick out one favorite scene. And I understand you wishing the characters were real. There are so many books I have read that I wish the characters were real because they were such like-able people that I could imagine having them for a friend. I love all your sewing projects- this one was totally spot-on. My oldest granddaughter is your age… you are also a girl after my own heart. I learned to sew at age 16 and I’m still sewing.
I am so glad you get the chance to bring back some of that childlike whimsy through your creations!!! I kive your work and energy! Have a wonderful day Carly B❤
Thank you for giving and showing the steps to french seam pockets. I tried doing this on a nightgown and couldn't figure out why it didn't work. It seems like it should be super simple. But my brain just wouldn't grasp it. 😂❤ This turned out really cute. And suits you perfectly. My favorite Anne movie is the first one. And my favorite scene is where Anne meets Marilla and discovers that she isn't wanted because she was a girl. It reminds me of when we were first fostering our son. Long story short, we had parakeets at the time. One of them died. And because of the circumstances surrounding my son being taken away from his mom, he thought that whenever there was a death, he would have to go back to the children's home. So when he found out the parakeet had died, he went to his room, packed up his Thomas and Friends trains (his favorite toys) and came and told us he was ready to go. Poor little guy.😢 That Anne scene breaks my heart every time.
Love the tone on tone check you chose. Anne and most importantly...Marilla would approve! ♡ My VHS copies wore out from watching it so much as a kid...of course the book written by L.M. Montgomery is also timeless. I have listened to the audio book a few times while creating in the studio and dreaming of kindred spirits or contemplating sleeping up in a cherry tree.
My obscure faves are the two youtube webseries "Green Gables Fables" and "Project Green Gables." They invision the characters in modern day and do a really good job. My fave scene is when Anne gets the puff sleeve dress, I feel like thats when she knows she is truly a part of the family. The dress turned out wonderful!
❤❤❤ it’s been a long time since I’ve watched Anne of Green Gables. But when I heard you say “bosom friend” ah, my heart. I did love her once. I think my favorite that stayed with me was Anne floating down the river like lady shallott. I always did love her interactions with Gilbert.
I’ve been really enjoying putting in pockets that are also sewed into the waste band! They hold weight much better because of the extra support from the waste band and are just as easy to sew in 😊 they also sit flatter under the dress / skirt ❤
I loved Anne of Green Gables enough that I named my first child from it. I have a Marylla (but people liked to add letters when they pronounce it) I loved Coleen Duherst as Marilla which is why I used that name.
I read all of the books, and watched these movies over and over and over in high school (aka 1985). I’m always delighted to discover other kindred spirits in the world!
I absolutely love Anne of green gables. And only the 1985 version! I got the trilogy under my pillow from the tooth fairy as a kid and I still have them. I loved Anne so much my grandma took me to PEI and we went to the house that inspired it. I have too many favorite scenes but from the first movie maybe it’s when Anne apologizes to Rachel but doesn’t really apologize. This dress is so cute and very Anne. This makes me need to make a gingham dress and pinafore

Oh Carly! You had me in tears when you were talking about the movies! Those are such a huge part of my childhood and who I am as a person! Your dress and pinafore are perfect! (If you ever come to Canada and plan on visiting Green Gables, you must put that dress/pinafore in your baggage! ❤)
I never thought about doing pockets like this before!! I always made the pocket pouch and then tried to awkwardly inset it into an opening in the side seam. Genius!!!
@@claudiakneutgen4485 omg you're kidding. I could probably learn a lot from following actual patterns and not trying to copy existing garments... thanks!
if you do another video based on the more recent show this time, though it’s not really one you can easily modernise, anne’s green/blue dress at the very end of anne with an e is my absolute favourite! though with period clothing you kinda need to have the right under layers for it to look how it’s supposed to, which adds another layer of difficulty in translating it to a modern interpretation that will still register as what it’s based on
IDK about Australians using Imperial, but I'm from the United States, and I use the metric system when millimeters work better than fractions of inches Love Ann Of Green Gables. I remember reading her books when I was little. There was a line about wishing her red hair would darken when she got older, and I had the same wish...and I was so glad when it came true. She was such a great character for me to read
These came out sooo good! I think something about your sleeve cap curves might have needed to be adjusted (not sure if that’s what you did in the end) but it’s always a guessing game for me. Sleeves are tricky, yours came out great though!
To fix your sleeve, unpick just the cap of the armscye., leaving the underarm. Allow the sleeve to droop on your arm until the diangle creases lessen. Measure how much you need to add to the cap and alter your pattern as required.
absolutely love your creation, this video, and AOGG. my fave is the first movie, the fishing for lake trout scene! (though there are so many good ones, it's really hard to choose)
I love the finished outfit! I like Anne's clothes but I must admit I absolutely love Diana's clothes, I plan to sew some of both Anne's and Diana's outfits.
Love making french seams. Thanks for all the pocket tips. I have problems with sleeves all the time. After years of sewing you would think i can do them perfect now ..not. ugh. Anne with an E as well.
Whoa!! Everything turned out so good!!! I feel like you could use the same dress pattern you made to do a Kiki's Delivery Service dress too! Ive loved both of these movies since i was a kid ❤️ i wish i had the space to make these myself! I might have to do something about that lol
I’m curious if you’ve ever seen Road to Avonlea? It’s set in the some town a while after Anne of Green Gables, with some familiar characters. It’s got some beautiful outfits!
Me find the two biggest issue with printed fabric is the white back get visable on skirts and stuff when you move around or sit down. And the print is rarely on grid so can't use the lines on the fabric don't match whatever you do and make it look crocked something if go on grid on fabric or have the pieces cut out slightly off grid.
The screenshots tickle some very old hidden memory in my brain.... I think I've watched at least the first movie when I was very little?? But I can't remember properly D: This way or another, I love your energy/your enthusiasm!! I really love working beside your videos :D

I think you're the second person today that I've heard say that about using the imperial measurements when you're sewing versus metric. I think the other place I saw it was on a comment under a video and I think the comment is in Canada.
I’m Dutch and have noticed I just use both imperial and metric depending on what’s most convenient. Like my myself I’d use metric, but if the pattern is in imperial it just becomes a mess. And with seam allowance it’s 0,5 cm, 1 cm, half an inch, 3/4 of an inch in my brain😂

Oh Carly! You had me in tears when you were talking about the movies! Those are such a huge part of my childhood and who I am as a person! Your dress and pinafore are perfect!
(If you ever come to Canada and plan on visiting Green Gables, you must put that dress/pinafore in your baggage! ❤)
More content! Fun Video!
ah this turned out so good and cute!! I love it
I never thought about doing pockets like this before!! I always made the pocket pouch and then tried to awkwardly inset it into an opening in the side seam. Genius!!!
😂 she did it quite normal as you will find it in each pattern with side pockets. Thats the way to do it
@@claudiakneutgen4485 omg you're kidding. I could probably learn a lot from following actual patterns and not trying to copy existing garments... thanks!
Marilla would 100% use the selvedge!
the dress!!!!!! omg i need to make myself one right this moment!!!!
ive been learning to weave because i only seem to find printed fabrics in store near me
if you do another video based on the more recent show this time, though it’s not really one you can easily modernise, anne’s green/blue dress at the very end of anne with an e is my absolute favourite! though with period clothing you kinda need to have the right under layers for it to look how it’s supposed to, which adds another layer of difficulty in translating it to a modern interpretation that will still register as what it’s based on
SO CUTE!!
IDK about Australians using Imperial, but I'm from the United States, and I use the metric system when millimeters work better than fractions of inches
Love Ann Of Green Gables.
I love it! For tis halloween, I'm doing a Marilla inspired outfit.
absolutely love your creation, this video, and AOGG. my fave is the first movie, the fishing for lake trout scene!
AHH IT CAME OUT PERFECT :) BRAVO
So adorable!!! ❤❤❤
Thank you for explaining things,im re learning sewing again so your vids have been super helpful 🫶🏻💜 with love from a fellow Aussie
You are so lovely, and I just adore you
aw thank you for watching!!!
Proper Anne of Green Gables vibes, yes please.
The screenshots tickle some very old hidden memory in my brain.... I think I've watched at least the first movie when I was very little?? But I can't remember properly D: This way or another, I love your energy/your enthusiasm!! I really love working beside your videos :D
As a quilter I use the imperial system. Australian here 🇦🇺 I use metric for everything else
Oh dear! Me too!
hiiiiii!!!
@@fromcarlyb I am sure you hear it all the time... but you are such an ABSOLUTE DELIGHT. Every time your videos come across my feed, they bring a smile to my face and brighten my day. But seriously, same girl... someday, I'll run away to Prince Edward Island and trek across the fields with a bosom friend.
@@AmandaJAlonso whaaaat this is so nice of you to say. :') i'm so glad they can bring a little sparkle to the day! hahahah YES PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND IS CALLING!!!!!!!!
The title of this video is so relatable
Gilbert saving Ann as she enacted the Lady of the Lake. Ann Sherly what are you doing? Such a lovely dress and pinafore.
Normally when I do gathered dresses. I do 1.5x the previous tier.
I think you're the second person today that I've heard say that about using the imperial measurements when you're sewing versus metric. I think the other place I saw it was on a comment under a video and I think the comment is in Canada.
This is absolutely darling! Well done!
Have you watched "Anne with an 'E'" yet? Highly recommend ;) Gorgeous project as always ! 🥰🥰
