For the cards with special abilities, they immediately get their effect applied even if they don't end up being the winning cards in the trick?

The rules for 3s and 7s say "when you play this", so the effect takes place immediately. 1s and 5s say "the winner", so they take effect after the trick. 9s say "when you lead this", so only a led 9 matters and affects the follower's options.

Clarifying question, if between rounds the "+" is on a square that is already covered by a forest token, do we place a gem on the space closer to the center, or omit that gem?

The way I understand it, you would still place a gem in the next available spot.
Per the written rules under round end: add gem token “… on side A of the board, this means you will add five gem tokens…”
To me, this sounds like 5 gem tokens on Side A get added at the end of a round, regardless of forest tokens.

How is side B different from side A?

Hello! When the Royal Heir card is played and the other player is not required to follow suit, if he plays card in different suit but with higher number, who wins the trick?
