  • Lee forged ahead to a gold medal win in the hotly-contested final, while Biles cheered from the stands. Biles went into the Olympics as the favorite to win the all-around event, which would have been her second consecutive championship title, before announcing on Wednesday that she was pulling out of the final. She cited her mental health struggles as the reason for her withdrawal - hinting that the issues are related to trauma from the abuse she suffered at the hands of pedophile doctor Larry Nassar. The former Olympic champion put on a brave face, smiling and cheering in the stands as Lee and and Biles' replacement Jade Carey, 21, took part in the all-around final, which ended up in an incredibly close race. Lee, from Minnesota, put up strong performances on all four events, however she did not cement her win until the final rotation, when she went head-to-head with Brazilian athlete Rebeca Andrade. Andrade, 22, made several mistakes in her floor routine, allowing Lee to forge ahead and claim victory. Carey had very disappointing routines on the uneven bars and balance beam, which saw her drop out of medal contention, although her floor exercise was incredibly strong.

Suni had the potential to win even if Simone didn’t leave. She’s strong enough to hit regardless of the unfortunate circumstances as of late. It’s not fair to undercut her hard work and talent by distracting from it for a attractive title.

The pressure of being named the most decorated gymnist in history, the official FACE of the Olympics, and feeling the need to uphold this standard of perfection and greatness at all times? No no no.. while I love Suni ❤, and rooting for her tremendously, my sweet Suni was NEVER under this magnitude of pressure over the course of several YEARS. What you fail to realize is that if a gymnast is not mentally/emotionally ok, they can SERIOUSLY hurt themselves out there, or WORSE, cause permanent damage. When your mind shuts down, how is it that you can trust that your body will do what it's supposed to do? It truly becomes a dangerous situation. Sometimes people forget reason for being in the Olympic “Game”. Do your best, have fun and hope to meet new friends. Despite of the deadly virus cause plague, distrust and misunderstanding among countries. I totally disagree. Lee only beat Simone once, and Simone wasn't even doing some of her usual routines which had the highest scores. If Simone were to do the individual all round, she would perform those routines with very high scores, and would have won. Lee would have won silver. I'm so proud she decided to stop. Shows she values what's more important: herself. Anyways, Suni won gold, and that's crazy awesome. I'm just sad for Jade.

The comments on here are disgusting. First of all: huge congrats to Sunisa for winning AA title, you did amazing and everyone is so so proud of you.
then... Some of yall still bashing Simone in the comments is sickening, and it shows that none of you know anything about gymnastics. Gymnasts and people who actually know more about the sport than just watching the Olympics once ever 4 years, know that what Simone did was to save her own life and so that her teammates could have a shot to medal. That doesn't make her any less of a gymnast. Are yall seriously that incapable of putting yourselves in other peoples shoes or were you all just waiting for a moment to hate on Simone because frankly it looks personal.
Every elite gymnast has the ability to beat Simone, it just so happens that not a lot of them have in the past and that is why she is the most decorated gymnast of all time. Stop hating on her for no reason, Sunisa won and we are all happy for her! We don't know what would've happened if Simone was well enough to compete and we will never know, can we stop bashing Simone now for no reason at all? Did these trolls want her to injure herself, so she can proof it was unsafe for her to compete? Earn your own olympic medal before you bash the accomplishments of another athlete.
You, stay-at-home-talk-trash-about-olympians-on-your-silly-little-screen are the saddest bunch of humans out there, lord.

@@L.Bebber8593 - Simone is a great gymnast; however, the argument that she is the "GOAT" is somewhat nearsighted. There are fantastic gymnasts throughout history -- some with PERFECT scores. Simone Biles is (arguably) the greatest of the last decade.

I am proud of this young woman, she did great job. Stop saying she didn't quit, neither did Simone. Simone chose her mental state, this young woman didn't have a 1/4 of the mental pressure that Biles went into this tournament with. The media put this pressure on Simone, making it all about her instead of just enjoying the tournament. Simone, is and will be the goat, for decades to come, she has vaults named after her.
