The Z4M will always have a special place for me, the last BMW that was as analog as a 90s car but with enough power and grip to keep up with the cool kids today.

I started working for BMW in 1992 in London, driving the Z1 was amazing and you got the looks wherever you drove. To this day I still like the Z1 and wished I had the money to buy one.
My dad's friend had a white one when I was a kid, to this day I am still in awe of it, still the coolest thing ever seeing those doors go up and down. I would love to have one today.
Whoever is directing the reviews of late is doing a stellar job. Definitely a step up from before and the production is unique compared to all the other channels.

The thing about this car is, I can remember with absolutely clarity the first time I saw one and how utterly gobsmacked I was. Paris 1988, Plâce d'Iena, about 6pm. A man parked, stepped out, closed the door and walked away while I stood rooted and my jaw hanging.
An exotic dealer in my area has a few Z1’s right now. They are all priced around 100k. I’d say unknown due to limited production rather than underrated.
I'm old enough to remember when the Z1 was new. I remember reading about it in the car magazines. I love the look. I hope to be able to afford one some day. Thank you.
Well come to think of it I realised how did I became a BMW fanatic (fanboy), ifI remember my very first ever BMW I seen on the road was outside my school as an 9 year old kid back in 1990 which at the time was a Z1 in the same green colour & funky classy cool looks that inspired me to the core throughout my youth. An decade & so later, my first car was a E30 318i that became the perfect passion of joy & lifestyle but I still thinking about was that a green Z1 driving pass me & why haven’t I seen one on the road again in Australia. I swear it was a Z1 that got my complete attention cause it’s was a uncommon yet unusual short looking topless doorless gorgeous body of the driving machine I ever first witnessed in my life. 😱👍😍
A friend of mine had one which i could drive sometimes. I remember driving about 140 km/h (about 87 miles per hour) on the Swiss Autobahn - with doors down. that was really a great feeling. almost like sitting in a go-kart. Loved it.
The doors were not designed to make it easier getting in and out. They were a modern take on a roadster with side screens but without the hassle of removing the glass and storing it. The car was not originally intended for production but such was the reception of the Z1, BMW decided to build a limited run of 8000 vehicles, one of which I owned. Great car with a beautifully designed interior. The only real downside was a small boot. If only BMW would design a nice car again!
These were around when I was growing up, usually in this green colour or in that maroon-red/brown kind of colour... haven’t seen one in over a decade now (until this video!)
BMWs always has innovative technology and ahead of its time, I8 first car to have laser lights, M4 GTS with the resurrection of the water injection, first V12 with direct injection (E66), E32 BMW 7 was the first to have Xenon lights, e31 as a whole.. E53 X5 completely started the new super sport suv trend - unibody with a big V8, power and comfort that can do good amount of off-roading with the proper tires, 6 time worlds fastest sedans from E28 to the F10. Fastest SUV tittle 3 times. BMW producing 1500HP figures out of 4 cylinders in the 80s, Mclaren F1 with the BMW S70/2 making it the fastest production car for 12 years and in the same era winning LeMans. BMWs were so ahead of their time.
One could say that BMW have Teutonic stubbornness in sticking to the Systeme Panhard layout, but FWD does not become a sports car, nor does out and out speed but traditional handling does, innovation also makes this one.
Sure, the Z1's doors made it easier to get in and out... Compared to a car with no doors. There's something so inelegant about swinging your legs up and over a high sill. It's a cool looking door, but it's not practical at all.
"Definitely tarmac" ACTUALLY no! "Tarmac" is much older than modern bituminous asphalt concrete; MacAdam was a Scottish engineer who developed the modern graded dirt road in the 19th century, hence the phrase "macadam road". In order to improve the durability of macadam roads, they were coated with tar, hence "tarmac" (short for 'tarred macadam'). So unlike modern roads where the binding tar is mixed with rocks (bituminous concrete), "tarmac" describes a dirt road that has just been coated with tar, and isn't something we really see anymore. Hope people find that interesting!
I'm a greasy spanner monkey from a side street nest of nuts and bolts......but I've worked on, and driven one of them, it was getting on a bit back then, but the doors were a show stopper!!! and still worked 25 years later!!!!
Always made me laugh when they said you could change the side panels in an hour with just a Screwdriver LOL!! Needed more than just a Screwdriver to get my side panel off! well I'll find out soon enough how long as I need to remove all the panels for a nice new repaint 🙂Wouldnt want to jump up and down on any of my 30 Year old panels either, especially the 2 front Wings that now have slight cracks 😞
Nice to see a BMW with an elegant grille.

Super video, love it; the subject and the presentation. More classic BMWs please
This guys brilliant top gear should promote him and give him paddy McGuinness role 👍
Jack Rix is great but not my cup of tea
The definition of a Roadster.
Thanks for reviewing it.
I like this series even more than the actual TV show.
Gotta say jack has really REALLY come in to his own I just love watching him, and I love the z1 too
This was a stunning head turner when it came out. A friend had one of those early 90s and it was a blast driving it.
another top gear youtube episode absolutely blowing the BBC TV show away!!!! Keep it up lads!!!
This is absolute great work from Top Gear
My grandpa has red one and in summer he often takes me somewhere with it. Love that car
Finally top gear are doing some good job
I quite like the videos you guys have been putting out this year.
More of these vids please! TG retrospective
I really enjoy these new online episodes. Well done Top Gear
I like these, they're funky, but prices are insane now, ill stick with my Z3
Know what you mean the prices are bonkers.
To be honest I didn’t like the Z3 when it came out but it’s grown on me now.
The script on this vid is really a step up from the previous ones.
The 80s were the leadup to the best decade in the modern era. I could've lived my whole life in the 80s and 90s and been content

the lincoln mark 8 had these doors decades ago.
BMW is always ahead of its time. X5, X6, M cars, M1, idrive, shark fin antenna, quad exhaust, never ending list.
I have such a soft spot for these. Shame they were a little limited engine wise.
I would so dream to have that Z1 styling with M3/M4 engine and gearbox.
Thanks, now that brought back memories! See, this car was on the cover of one of my driving-school booklets...
:)
More of this retro stuff with Jack please!
I am not a fan of BMW but this one always inside my heart
This is my all times fav bmw now
Added amphibious features, not flying yet can be the most sophisticated car in its class
Now I can die happly because I've seen an elegent grill on a bmw in my life
I'm amazed that the Ralph Naders of the world allowed a door like that.
Nice James May spaniel mode clip at the end
