I was doing New Miner Training at the Black Thunder Mine the day the first train load of coal left the mine. There were less than 200 people working there at the time. It is amazing to see how much it has grown and to see that the mine management's commitment to safety is still as strong as it ever was. David Stradley
My grandfather's farm in Illinois was strip mined for coal. The land today is ok for grazing cattle, but the 6feet of unbelievable top soil that produced corn or soy beans is gone. My in thousands of years it could come back. Strip mining for coal was bad idea on productive farm land that could feed people for thousands of years. The coal mined there is a long gone.
Yeah, strip mining is awful in general, and is not like there's a lot in the surface, really coal coal is underground, for example the Paganzo basin in western argentina may have over 5 trillion tons of coal, is 3 times the size in area and the coal seams can be up to 6 times thicker, the issue, is that is under 1.2 miles of solid granite and porphyry in a volcanic and seismic zone
I really hate to tell you Mr Know-it-all, I worked there till I couldn't stand it anymore and went to work in a mine to the south.and before that I worked at Triton coal company(the company that Arch claimed the tons from) Let me guess, you operate a desk for a living and have no idea how things really work.
They'll have to increase production at the Black Thunder Mine in order to keep the batteries of all those 'electric cars' charged and on the road ! There's irony for you.
Bucket wheel excavators cannot move rocky soil very well. If you notice in German lignite mines, the gravel there is very loose packed and uniform compared to this
I had the good fortune to put a 351 Marion Shovel in Black Thunder in 1996. It had an 80 yd bucket to be used as a coal loader. This was the last Marion machine as far as I know. We were transitioning to our new owners, Bucyrus International at about that time. Met a lot of nice folks while I was there, great operation.
What do you think Iowa's 2,140.7 megawatts of natural gas-fired generating capacity does? How about it's 679.5 megawatt nuclear reactor? What about the over 7,000 megawatts of installed wind generating capacity?
D estos no comento nada pero evidente que también tienen racan racan !! Ya se cansarán de trabajar pero da igual!! pleguen cuando quieran (!! Yo no aviso a todos los gremios uno por uno !! Ya le veré cerrar de gopetazo

3:15 Thats not reclaimed land, notice the wood fence post in the background.
You sir are an idiot. You don't think they put fences back up after mining? Keep buying coal powered electric cars
At 1.56 what make of shovel is that ?
It's a drag line not a shove, it moves dirt from side to the other. It does not load trucks like a shovel does
I want to go there and see Ursa Major I hope they give tours of the machine
If anybody knows, is any of this metallurgical coal? Any used for coking or it it all thermal coal?
Its thermal coal.
Met coal is mostly mined in PA
who's doing mining in society?
We live in a mining society
lol yep
you to?
Hell yeah making a killin not having to move a100 ft or more of rock to get to the coal like in the appalachias
Are those school buses those miners are riding at the end of this video? Wonder if any of them ever slash the seats?
we don't why would we do that?
I love you mommy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love that real energy!!!! Don’t ever give in to that fake green energy BS!!!
Agree!
this looks great but it was in general. I m interested in land reclamation.
hopefully i will find something somewhere else.
The land looks just the same if not better after reclaim. 1,000x better than windmill farms or solar panels😊

No. It's the product they turn out. Low sulfur coal.

You idiot
@@Gus1966-c9o Same to you, you Muppet ! :-)
Why don't they use a bucketwheel excavator?
Because sh and truck is faster

Coal is king, but for how long?
Forever !!
andrew blauwet No. Coal will not last forever.
How you know?
andrew blauwet You can't exactly burn 5 billion tons of something every year and expect it to last forever.
You a Coal Miner ?
Great vid!
Coal is Great !! Coal Powers Iowa were i Live!!
Andy CowBoy we're getting a lot more wind turbines now though.
I live in Grinnell iowa and I'm going to move out to Wyoming, probably will go back to mining (only this time coal and not limestone)

No, State refuses to regulate air quality.
That's funny. Wyo air is clean and clear. Unlike liberal states. Maybe you should worry about that
