    BEN! I would say that valheim's combat feels a lot like darksouls. VERY stamina managment based, parrying attacks stuns enemies for higher damage frontal attacks, weapons have different swing patterns and one or two different moves. And then you are with your friends in a survival game! Building structures together to actually make an area livable (you are really incentivised by the gameplay mechanics to build things in a certain way, and that makes building more of a puzzle than just solely an exercise in imagination. Playing together with friends and working towards dark souls-y style bosses you fight in a massive open world is a unique feeling thing.
    its not perfect, but the potential is insane, and the amount of really well polished content for a small team to have done is very impressive. It was a joy to delve into this with friends and constantly be surprised by the things we found, the game went far deeper than we thought - but after about a week we burned through the majority of the content, and all the bosses except for the last. I would wait until the game has EVEN MORE added, and a slightly longer progression, even though there is still a satisfying amount for the price there right now.

    1:41:20 Damiani saying a Switch Pro is 3-4 years out is so refreshing. I'm so tired of most other outlets acting like it's eminent on nothing but rumor and fan-theories. That's the first realistic take I've heard on it. It might as well be vaporware at this point the way people talk about it. But yes, if they want to go this intermediate upgrade route like PS4 Pro/X1X, this year is the last chance before 3-4 years to next upgrade cycle (which I highly doubt).

    I'm with Damiani, trying to build/upgrade a PC right now is insane. If you think it's tough trying to get a console right now, you don't know the horror that is trying to get a brand new GPU or CPU. Yes, a GPU like a 3080 is still noticeably more powerful than any of the consoles, but it's not worth the money and effort at the moment.

    I've played Switch mostly in Docked mode and a lot of that is because the grip/weight of the dog-ears controller thing is a lot more comfortable on my hands, and a TV lets me see small action cues or text clearly. I can't imagine beating Hades on Extreme Measures 4 while in handheld mode. Then again, we are in a pandemic, so that's another reason.

      Cautiously optimistic. I dig the new character design, good they are going back to the story of Samurai 1 but told in a new way as a sort of half-reboot. I do hope Omega Force spends a little more time with optimization, cause sadly their musou games most of the time run pretty bad, I wouldn't mind if they bring back the option from Fire Emblem Warriors where you could switch between Quality mode and performance mode depending if you want the best resolution or best frame rate.

    Great stuff from Huber on the immersive nature of Resident Evil, it's the same for me with that other zombie survival horror game from Capcom, Dead Rising.
    The Dead Rising games, in their own ways, are as much "immersive sims" as the Deus Ex games and I love both series.
    People talk about how they will close lockers after searching through them in Deus Ex. Now I never do that myself in Deus Ex, but I absolutely will shut the door behind me on those damn zombies in Dead Rising, I am very much immersed in those worlds.
    The mechanics of a Dead Rising game, as silly as they are, plus the whacky presentation, actually help the immersion once you've gotten used to the rhythm of the games. Chuck Greene celebrates leveling up right along with you, "Right on!", "Kick ass!" and he fist pumps the air; your survivors in DR3, "A whole new level!", you feel they're in it with you and you with them, it's wonderful.

    1:51:20 - That was a really good answer. Nintendo likes to play it smart. It's kinda like Breath of the Wild. They wanted to use an art style which "is easy to lie." Nintendo games for all it's merits don't aim to the highs of Xbox and PS4 which drive on pushing realistic and high fidelity visuals. They have the Disney approach of looking approachable for both kids and adults.
    I think in the end, people will always want everything, but we can only debate from what is there, and if Nintendo games are still appealing regardless of technical issues and people still buy them why should they change in the short term. Why should Pokemon be pressured to be better if it continues to meet expectations in regards to sales. Why should Paper Mario change back if the last one still sold more than the one people are still talking about.
    Quality and business not always align. Value is a subjective thing. A flawed cult classic may end up being more nostalgic than the latest trendy and technical masterful hot thing of today.
    In short, I think while discussions can speculate, it's more interesting to hear about what exists. I do wonder how Kena will end up being and if it'll be a success. Not all games drive a mindshare like Bloodborne or Breath of the Wild.

    I feel like Bravely 2's art style is the polygonal version of the FF5 and FF6 iOS ports. You know, the graphics everyone hated. I think it has to do with having overly bright/smooth character models on more moderate 2.5D environments. I don't know the science behind it, but my eyes like the approach of Octopath or Project Triangle more, where the characters look a generation behind their environments.

    Not too much further into Bravely Default 2, cutting grass and trees often gives you weapons and armor that are actually upgrades for your characters. It's not that uncommon either. I remember getting mage armors or new spears or axes and they were all very good weapons I couldn't even buy in the shop at the time. Also, the gold amounts really ramp up - I've found at least 5 digits worth of gold in minutes later on. Sometimes cutting grass and trees helps you find chests that are inaccessible or just difficult to see too. Going into a new area, it's worth doing this for a bit just to see what happens lol. It's not something I would do over and over repeatedly in the same area, but it's neat that it's there.

  • @Katie-hb8iq
    @Katie-hb8iq 3 роки тому +3

    Bravely Default 2 definitely incentivizes you to change jobs. Enemies often don't have the typical black mage weaknesses - many are weak to cure attacks, spears, daggers, bows, earth damage, wind damage, dark damage, etc. - and so you really are forced to constantly evolve your job progression and your weapon loadouts, especially against bosses. Also, certain themes of abilities tend to come up in each area, which necessitates using different abilities or different pieces of armor. Also, a lot of weapons have high magic power on them as well as high physical power, which means you can use something like the Lu Bu Spear while having your white mage as a sub-class and not get too punished for doing that.

  • @flyingplantwhale545
    @flyingplantwhale545 3 роки тому +2

    Im perfectly fine with the Switch for what it is. Weather you Like it or not, you DO have to consider the portability to appreciate what it’s doing. We’re getting modern graphical feature set that other modern home consoles have (physically based rendering, hardware accelerated particles, screen spaced reflections etc.) and its running on a portable now. Obviously it’s a balancing act since these features are running on limited resources . But that one ability to take games like Doom Eternal, Witcher 3, Crysis on the GO, is reason enough for the Switch to exist (at least for me).

    • @Ayoul
      @Ayoul 3 роки тому

      I mean for the price year, but personally, I'd take a little price increase in exchange for portability and a little bit more juice just so that those AAA games don't look muddy and dated. It's more a testament to the people who port these projects that they can get them to run than to the hardware itself.

    • @flyingplantwhale545
      @flyingplantwhale545 3 роки тому

      @@Ayoul I think it's a testament to both, the devs and the hardware. Though I agree, a little more juice would go a long way to bumping up the resolution on some of the more demanding titles and allow the art and graphics to shine better.

      Not to mention 90% of all indie games are most enjoyable on the switch thanks to its portability

  • @borgs101
    @borgs101 3 роки тому +5

    With respect to "is the Switch feeling dated".
    Since the Wii Nintendo's strategy has been to focus on product differentiation from their competitors rather than the "arms race" of graphics fidelity, this strategy has proven financially successful.
    During the Wii era there was a lot of shovelware amongst the Nintendo greats but with the Switch I think there is something different.
    We are seeing that the Switch's install base on its own is large enough to sustain exclusives from third party publishers that are designed specifically for Switch, and it will always be the case that games designed specifically for Switch are going to more interesting than multi format games, especially if you are focusing on AAA games.
    With Wii I think it's install base was actually inflated because a lot of people bought it just for Wii Sports and the attach rate attests to that. The Switch attach rate is very high, people buy games on it.
    Monster Hunter Rise and Octopath Traveller are good examples, I think some third party publishers are starting to see that it is commercially viable for them to invest in games designed exclusively and specifically for Switch compared to trying to get a game designed for more powerful hardware to work on Switch. Noting that third party games like this may come to other platforms down the line but the point being they are being made with Switch as base rather than to "downgrade to".
    Of course all of these games "could look better" on next gen (disregarding portability for a moment ) but the mindset I like to take with this is that it is better to focus on what is rather than what isn't. Though noted I will buy AAA games on next gen when they are available because it will give me the best experience. And ultimately for me that's okay. I'd prefer to have different experiences on Switch anyway.

    • @Vvonter
      @Vvonter 3 роки тому

      I agree, I think that's why the Switch Pro talk is getting annoying. Until it actually exists I think people are just setting themselves to be harshly disappointed. Nintendo isn't aiming to have parity with the rest, there'll still be limitations and specific versions for Nintendo systems. Until proven the contrary I think it's just a shot in the dark speculating how much better it'll be, or it'll actually push current games to an attractive proposition to entice upgrading. Nintendo is the type of company that will emphasis a new added tech, like IR, gyro, HD Rumble, knob to move the camera, than the power.

      @@dreamerabe Yeah, but like most NIntendo rumors, I'm just saying, it could be less than what people are expecting. One article that mentioned why not to get that excited about it, is that the target console will still be the regular Switch. For example Doom Eternal, it cut motion blur as one of the effect it doesn't have on Switch, a Pro could possibly improve framerate add resolution, but all that in theory will be from Doom Eternal's Switch version. I just think it'll be like if the Wii have had a Pro version, that doesn't mean they'll have put back the crowds of zombies in Dead Rising. It'll just be use the hardware to add resolution and maybe framerate.

    I found a lot of the reactions to the Pokemon Legends announcement that focus on the need for Nintendo to release a more powerful hardware quite strange. Do we actually expect Game Freak (a completely unambitious developer) to build an open-world game bigger and more complex than BOTW? If the Switch can run BOTW decently, it can definitely run this game. If the game runs like shit, it will be because of Game Freak's own limitations, not the Switch. Musou's to me are all about getting stronger and stronger while learning strategies to clear maps faster and faster. The field layouts often felt too big with little focus. I think the grind is good, as long as it's more condensed like the more traditional Musou games. However I do like what they're trying with the added stories and mechanics unique to their collab's source material.

    The Switch was underpowered since launch and some of these problems already existed then. Its just more obvious now with the new gen. Im fine when the game run at a steady 30 framerate maybe with some dips when i could buy the same game on the pc and enjoy 60 or more. More often then not it depends on the game. As long as it doesnt affect my enjoyment of the game i dont care. Obviously some people want better performances. Thats why i watch gameplay beforehand how the game runs overall.

    The best thing about Bravely Default's job system is finding game breaking combinations that give you that insane OP DMG power fantasy you are looking for in a RPG. As it stands however one of the first jobs you get (Beastmaster) is very unbalanced. It gains stats based on the amount of monsters you capture. You can stock up on monsters up to 99 of each type which gives you 9999 HP 999 MP and 999 to all stats with only a few hours of grinding.

    So long as the Switch remains a hybrid system you're never going to get PS4 Pro / PS5 level fidelity. Just not going to happen. I'd imagine their could one day be a home console only version of the Switch but then every game will need a patch to make the most of the system and the games would all have to still work on the regular Switch.

    I really love those towns, but character design and animation is just... meh at best. It complete ruins the ambiance.
    Also this came just shouts 'limited budget', not limited hardware. Switch can run frkn Doom Eternal, so GTFO.
    If only Square could make a full game in either that watercolour or 3D Pixel Art (Octo/Triangle) and then hit the tone of Primrose' story in Octo.

    Talking about subtitles in Japanese media releases that get English dubs, I hate it when I'm watching a movie with Japanese audio and the English subtitles are for the damn English dub; it's a huge problem because the dub usually takes so many liberties and assumes the English speaking audience is stupid.
    When nobody is talking in the Japanese original and we're having quiet moment, there's the English subtitles for the English dub popping up ruining it with some added exposition just to make sure those (presumed) stupid English speakers aren't lost about what's happening. Maybe stop making dubs for the lowest common denominator test audiences? That'd be great.
    Also, provide English subtitles that are a translation of what's being said in the original Japanese audio, thank you. This doesn't seem to be a problem with other non-English language films.

    I think Bravely Default 2 looks way better than the first game. I think this is the case of rose-tinted glasses and our memory of the game looking better than it actually does. The art style actually hasn't changed that much, and the towns and models and even textures all are a step up. Just compare screenshots between the two games and your nostalgia will be set right - bravely default 2 is a lot better. Like just walk around in the desert town at night and look at all the colors. Move up and down and watch the 3d painting transform before your eyes. Then compare it to the desert town in Bravely Default and I promise you will say Bravely Default 2 is a lot better. Rose-tinted glasses really mess with our judgement on stuff.

    while I agree a more powerful Switch would be nice, I wouldn't want it comparable to current gen stuff (PS5, Series X). If you think about it, who would make those games? Who has the budget, the manpower, the expertise/skill to make them at such high quality outside Microsoft, Nintendo, or Sony? EA, Ubisoft, and Activision have money and man power but none of the skill. Their cookie cutter games don't make me excited for the current gen, not that it has arrived yet. Where are those games btw? Besides its not how many teraflops but how you use it that matters. Graphical fidelity is just an asset for any game. Games should look better as years go by. Whether or not game design holds up is irrelevant to graphics. If everyone is pushing the technical boundaries of the medium and enabling new kinds of experiences(at least visually) then Nintendo should also chime in and help the process( they are one of the most influential powers in gaming; they kinda have a responsibility to the medium don’t you think?). And if graphics aren’t important to Nintendo then maybe invest in high end cpu’s and try and make more complex game mechanics and AI? Saying nintendo just shouldn’t improve anything and continue with their recent tradition of lacking hardware is silly imo. Not saying you implied it but I have heard the argument.

      Is it reaally an hardware issue with how the Pokémon games look? Cause Switch games can look much much better than what Game Freak showed us up to this point (Dragon Quest XI S looks way better than Sword/Shield), maybe it takes more time to tune a game perfectly for a specific platform and GF doesn't have that much time because they have this annual schedule, so to me that's the problem. Either you give GF more time to make their games, or you bring in more studios to try harder.

    • @mi2-c035

      And for the records, Game Freak has always struggled with visuals not looking on par with other first party Nintendo games, we all knew this was going to happen with Switch and the transition to HD games. So i don't think a new hardware is going to change much for them. As for PS4 games, most of them are on Switch actually so i don't think that's true, but i do agree that a revision would benefit both Nintendo and their partners so it'll happen eventually. @@hammadkhan450 Most Japanese games are usually Switch/PS4 from the get go, with exclusives on both systems. As for western games yeah i agree not that many, part of it because they build games for other systems first so with that mindset it's never going to change unless you literally build a clone of PS5/Series X which is what they want and it would be horrible quite frankly for the industry, as giving up on differentiation often lead to stagnation. We all loved Gamecube but that system bombed hard despite being superior specs wise to the PS2.
