This game deserves way more praise than it receives. No, the graphics are not Master System looking. They look way better than the previous two games. Yes, this game is hard, and that’s what I enjoy about it. Anyone complaining about the difficulty of a game needs to either not play it, lower the difficulty, or get good. It was a step backwards from the other Genesis games. Even Streets of Rage 3 looked & sounds better in comparison. Also, every enemy this time around was cheap. The Knights are too easy to deal with. The Minotaurs are the worst. The final boss isn't that hard. Even the hidden final boss isn't that much tougher.
I loved this game back in the day, definitely was one of my favorite beat'em'ups. Can't really understand how can anyone consider GA3 to be the worst in the series, imo it's the best.

This really wasn't that bad of a game, tried it a bit, It's for the most part faithful to the Style, 1 was great.. 2 was sort of a generalized clone with it's basic additions, 3, bit of difference but still, I wouldn't complain, least its not like some sequels or prequels that Ignore a general game play.
I feel pity, as somebody who played this game when He was a child, that the PS3 version was rather disappointing. Were the team who developed God Of War (Kratos) were able to get an opportunity from SEGA to develop this game, the quality of this game would have been stellar. I do hope that SEGA could contact them for a remake of the first golden axe. Thank you very much.
I'm surprised you did not use Tyris Flare's best best move. Press jump, then at the peak press down and attack (very briefly). This move is un-blockable and pretty much the best move in the whole game. Enjoy!
Sadly it seems like this game would have been released before Golden Axe 2, just from the look and feel. Definitely disappointing compared to the others, but not a bad game. But it is annoying that half the time you use magic. Nothing shows and you only hear the sounds, or all the characters disappear and you actually do see it.

A month ago i finished this game twice with my friend who has never played any 16-bit games before. Both times we got good ending, although during our first attempt he didn't make it and died very close to the final boss. Surely, I did most of the work during our playthroughs - but it is quite possible if at least one player is used to the game mechanics.
Actually.. I believe theirs a Golden Axe 4.. well, saw the Rom for it anywise on a site. Think its a rip from an arcade version, maybe.. no guarantees tho.
