Yo

You should stream A Night in Berlin
I don't remember this at all. I do remember looking up the band dir en grey was before. La...something. love "the final" song you picked for the intro.
Sea of Seatards
i've never heard of dir en grey before but dam this story was sooooo much better than I expected. If the dude made it up, screw it, he's the greatest storyteller of all time
You should check them out. They have some insane music videos. Theres one where babies grow on trees and a geisha picks one and start a eating it. I think that one is called Obscure. When I was 16 that was the edgiest shit I had ever seen lol. The song is great btw
@@plantemor Akuro no oka is a classic song Different sense has an edgy hentai tentacle rape music video they have a lot of bangers.
Sup cue
@@oopirates96 yeah I just went and reached it for the first time in a billion years and I had honestly blocked out the orgy scene from my memory, but watching it again it all came back haha. The stop motion geisha and the baby tree has always stuck with me though. It's just so fascinating and beautifully made. I heard something about the video being about the inhumane treatment of prostitutes in Japan at the time. Dunno if it's true but I think it's a cool message to have in a music video if it is.
@@plantemor honestly wouldn't surprise me. A good deal of their songs/videos deal with Japanese culture/identity. The aforementioned tentacle rape video for Different Sense is supposedly a metaphor for the 2011 earthquake/tsunami and the following nuclear meltdown, and displays different examples of the tentacle rape motif, from medieval wood carvings to modern hentai anime and J-horror movies. Almost as if to say that Japan has always fantasized of rape by the sea to being metaphorically raped by the sea.
“Alot of bands start off edgy and abrasive, and over time they become a lot more accessible and poppy.”
I have never been so offended by something I completely agree with.

Yes, sadly Gorillaz
In the case of Dir En Grey I feel like their last few records have had a higher quality of musicianship. Their move into prog metal is a win over their old nu/noisy output.
Nine inch nails did the opposite.

Red soil is just the japanese version of BOOM DA DA UMM NA MA NI MA only it sounds completly deranged and unhinged (for real though that's like my fave part before that drop slaps down on you!)
"We were smoking and being stupid"
God I miss being stupid at random people's houses. You're never too old and it's the ultimate pastime
I remember back in college i was at my bestfriend's house and we ate a plate of space brownies. For the first few minutes we didn't feel anything and just laughed it off and thought the brownies were shite. Cut to a few minutes later, he was in front of the tv laughing his ass off watching peppa pig and i was on the floor puking my guts out while flaming cockroaches crawled all over my body while singing the macarena.
Good times.
So true
this is how most of my music projects came into existence lol hanging around the home studio with the boys and the ladies, smoking joints, hitting the gravity bong (we were broke musicians most of the time back then, don't judge haha), being stupid and doing ridiculous shit. some of my favorite memories start off like that. we kinda went against the grain of "stoners" though. we weren't sinking into the couch. we were sinking into the sounds. 48 hours later and i'd have a rough mix of a record waiting to be shipped off to the mastering plant. those were the days! still steadfast when it comes to my music though, just not as many "friends" around the studio as there used to be.
god, yeah. honestly this year has actually fucked me up because after spending years getting over my extreme social anxiety, i've sunken back into it. hopefully when this is all over i'll be able to get over my anxiety again and just do dumb shit at my friends houses like we used to.
Kyo is an absolutely insane vocalist. The sounds he makes come outta his face are astonishing.
"and I imagine I'm not alone in that regard"
**Nods head even though I was exposed to the existence of this band only 30 seconds ago**
They have a highly diverse discography, I recommend listening to them. I’m sure you’ll find something you’ll like. They have Cure-esque rock ballads all the way to straight death metal songs
I can't agree more with this comment because I did the same exact thing.

Withering to death was my favorite album back in my junior year of high school. The fact that Dir en grey has made it this long without a lineup change, and can pack venues with little promotion and marketing shows how great of musicians they are.
Next up should be who made the Hitler version of Sonne from Rammstein.

Probably Rammstein.

Say what now?
10:09 Seelentau (the guy in the forum image) is basically the biggest Dir En Grey archiver on the web. If you want to find more DEG rarities and possibly even hoaxes, it may be worth shooting him a message. Pretty sure he uses the same name on reddit and youtube. Alternatively he also runs the DEG wikia so you might find him there.
What forum is this?
@calypsis Thank you for the kind words! :)
2 months too late but looks like “monochrome heaven” for me? Nit sure tho and I hate that thing so too lazy to check lmao
I'm a huge Dir en Grey fan and I never heard about this lol. Probably because I only started listening to them at 2014
Don't worry, I've been a fan since 2003 and I never heard about this until Whang mentioned it in his Napster video. Having finally listened to the track though, it's so obvious it isn't real. XD
Been a fan more than 10 years, this is the first time I heard about this
@@kiyavi Same. Fan since 2004 and never heard about this. But then again there were a lot of mislabelled tracks being shared on p2p. Mostly bootlegged live versions of songs. So meh....
I remember it! I downloaded it on Audiogalaxy sometime back in the early 2000's and I think I still have it saved on a disk somewhere. The general consensus was that it wasn't a Dir song, but we weren't 100% sure...
@@tesserakuent6876 I would say that I would never fall for this but then I remember in that me and my brothers had a cd full of l'Arc~en~Ciel songs, but half of it was mislabeled, to the point that it was years until we learn the correct names, and there were even songs from other bands labeled as L'Arc~en~Ciel. So yeah, early internet days were wild lmao.

Hi water maiden
You've probably been asked, but I assume that you don't have anything like the rumored to exist 'Saki Sanobashi' catalogued on your wiki?
Did you become a Whang fan from his video about you or did you get surprised to see him cover it?
Legand.
There was a song hidden at the end of Mr bungles album "disco volante" that's often referred to as either spy or secret song, maybe that's where you recognise the name from?
LOL Mr. Bungle :P
It plays after "carry stress in the jaw" which is hilarious because it's not even a secret at all if you're just listening through the album
Pretty sure incubus and many other bands did this too.
@@SlyHikari03 Tons of bands used to do this, it was almost a let down when bands didn't include a "secret" track for a while lol.
Anthrax’s Worship Music has a secret track 14 mins in on the last track. It completely caught me off guard and it’s pretty poppy too. It was a fun discovery.
Man...I was obsessed with Dir En Grey for 20 years now? Fk time is flying out the window

Jesus Christ, Dir en Grey. I can remember using an avatar of Kaoru on CheetahChat. Thanks for that blast from the past.
They are still going strong :)
Woah, you just reminded me of the time that 12-year-old me made a fake account on Neopets to see what it was like to be a boy on the site (rather than a girl, to clarify haha). I went in the forums and said I was a 16-year-old boy from Tokyo and attached a pic of 25-year-old Kaoru from the Gauze days (with the purple hair); girls believed it and started sending me messages asking me to be their boyfriend. It was surreal and I never replied. Nevertheless, Neopets sent me a warning because "this is not a dating site, so please stop" and I never touched the account again. .......That was the most 2002 blob of text I've ever written. Thanks for the memories!
@@kiyavi what an amazing story
Ah those times when every emo idiot was into visual kei.
More like "Jesus Christ R n R".
Holy shit I used to be a big fan of Dir En Grey back at the beginning of the 2010's. It was actually the first concert I had ever been too. I loved their old Visual Kai albums, but after I while I started to appreciate their death metal records more. Uroboros is till an amazing album. Very surprised and happy you're making a video about them!
I still use Toshiya as my gamer username and online account.
Are they really playing death metal, tho? To me, okay, to me...what they are playing, in current years, is Opeth-heavily-influenced prog/avantgarde alt metal. Just more experimental and thicker version of their old sound, albeit less melodic. Not trying to gatekeep or anything. I'm just calling it for what it is. Heck, I'm still listening to current Opeth even after they ended playing prog death.
@@SeymoreSparda Some songs like Hageshisha... could definitely be considered death metal. But yeah they don’t really fit in a singular genre
@@SeymoreSparda "Opeth-heavily-influenced prog/avantgarde alt metal"
sounds like a fancy way to skirt around calling it prog death metal
@@AftarTheHumble @Angus Lyons-Reid Oh, by no means am I trying to rip on DEG whilst I said that. While said statement may appear like a backhanded compliment to their current fans, but it also poses a rhetorical question of: "are they really THAT different sonically, compared to their past sound", towards their ex-fans who have stopped listening to and moved on from them, since their change of sound years prior.
Like, I recognize that one of the reasons why people like the musical concoction named v-kei so much in the past cause it was accessible af, being melodic and catchy and all, while having a bit of "edge", in their themes and showmanship. That sweet-sweet glam/hard/punk/gothic rock + trad heavy metal goodness. And when they first came to the scene, what they played, can still be considered as an extension to that sound, albeit a bit more metallic and experimental, as time went on.
All I'm sayin' is that, did their (deliberate, mind you) introduction of death and groove metal (and some ehem "deathcore" ehem) influences into their music totally erased their alt (nu/gothic/industrial) metal foundation to a total zero? Hell no, if you ask me. Nu metal wouldn't even sounded as it did if it were not for groove metal. Heck, they always have experimental tendencies. I'm implicitly calling out their ex-fans and telling them to come back into their embrace once again, by saying said statement.
You know what, I changed my mind. For the time being, I'm calling DEG a prog/avantgarde alt/death/groove metal band, fuck those who are against genre-slashing. Also, they should also collab with Jinjer and Katatonia, considering that that musical tendencies align with one another's , when you think about it.
@@AftarTheHumble Also, with Loathe and Vein. I like their brand of prog nu-metalcore very much. Their sound wouldn't clash at all with DEG's sound, trust me. At least not in the instrumentals side of things. Let's not act like contemporary Japanese music are not sprinkled with English words in their lyrics, here and there, lol. Also, with Tool and Deftones, cause why not.
No idea what this is. But it's Whang so I'm here and liking it

Gauze is still the best album, though.
That's pretty accurate. I really didn't care for the Filth album (kisou?) until years later, and I even originally thought Macabre was underwhelming. I listened to stuff from all three just today and do often.
