I wonder if John Charles Daly could imagine that over 60 years after his shows was hosted it would be watched by people not yet born and who would watch on a coloured a computer no bigger than a shoebox and with the ability to get all the information from the world in the blink of an eye.
Well, he would say this: not withstanding the passage of time as pertains to a medium being in and of itself, germane to the deliverance if said service, no.

I think JCD and the gang did not imagine in their wildest dreams that we'd all be watching and discussing them 60-70 years later! Those early television pioneers thought of shows like WML as ephemera at the time they were making them, not valuable social/historical documentation. Only those involved in the nascent computer industry, who were doing very early R&D on digital technology, knew that in 50 years laptops would exist and what they would look like and be able to do. At Disneyland in 1956, there was Tomorrowland, with the middle class home of the future, say the end of the 20th century. The home had a computer, of course, but it was built into the kitchen wall and had dials and a screen, if I remember correctly. I don't remember how this thing was supposed to work. The housewife would be able to order her groceries and send the order to the grocery store, who would then deliver the order to the home. At the time, I was eight years old and wondered why this was better than phoning the store and giving the order to someone. I never order anything online and I still feel this way.

She is actually the one who annoys me the most on this show with Dorothy a close second. I find the show entertaining but the way they all talk, the way they all act, they all have their noses so high up in the air they're leaving nose prints on the ceiling
At least a mystery guest that is still alive ! Marisa Pavan (wife of the french actor Jean-Pierre Aumont) is the twin sister of star actress Pier Angeli (who died in 1971) and she is now 86, living in France near Saint-Tropez, and hosts each year charity meetings for her foundation to help research against Alzheimer disease. She replaced her sister in the film The Rose Tattoo (1955) as Anna Magnani's daughter. Her performance earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She also won the Golden Globe Award for her performance in this film.

Kenneth Sherman ’59 wrote us to say he and his wife, Marianna, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on July 23, 2015. While at Springfield College, Sherman worked part-time at Smith & Wesson in Springfield making handcuffs, a distinction that earned him a spot on the television show What’s My Line? He noted that he won a $50 prize-big money back in 1956!

Admiral Smedberg's father was an Army General & his son was also a Navy Admiral. Smedberg commanded destroyers in WW2 & USS Iowa during the Korean War.

The first U.S. battleships were authorized in the 1880's. Of all that have been built or were proposed, only one was not named after a state of the union, the USS Kearsage (named after a sloop of war, laid down in 1896. launched in 1898, commissioned in 1900). So quite often a battleship was named after a landlocked state. 20 of the 50 U.S. states do not provide viable access to the ocean for ocean-going vessels (i.e., those states that do not border the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico or one of the Great Lakes).
Even so, you have reason to be proud of your state's contribution to U.S. Navy service. There were two battleships named USS Iowa and a third that was begun but not completed. The first one had the honor of being the first ocean going battleship in service, all the previous ones being used strictly for coastal defenses. USS Iowa (BB-4 on the naval roster) was commissioned in 1897 and saw considerable action in the Spanish-American War. She participated in the bombardment of San Juan, Puerto Rico, in the blockade of Santiago de Cuba (which bottled up Spanish warships in the harbor of that city) and the bombardment of a fort near that city, becoming the first U.S. ship attacked by one of the six Spanish warships during the Battle of Santiago. Fire from the Iowa set two Spanish cruisers aflame and beached them. After taking some hits, the Iowa joined with another ship to sink a Spanish destroyer and damaged another Spanish destroyer that ran aground as a result. Then the Iowa pursued another Spanish cruiser, the flagship of their local battle group, and ran it aground before the Spanish ship exploded. The Iowa then rescued officers and crew from three of the six Spanish ships that had been eliminated from the battle (1612 became U.S. prisoners of war). Along with the cruiser USS Brooklyn, the Iowa was credited with 70% of the damage inflicted on the Spanish war vessels. She fired 1473 rounds of ammunition (both large shells and smaller rounds) during the battle.
During World War I, the Iowa served primarily as a training vessel and guarded Chesapeake Bay without incident. She was decommissioned in 1919 and sunk in target practice in 1923.
The second USS Iowa (BB-53) had her keel laid down in 1920 and was 31.8% completed when construction was suspended in 1922. She was canceled and sold for scrap in 1923.
The third and final USS Iowa had the honor of having a class of fast battleships named after her, the last such class built (the Montana class being canceled in 1943 before being laid down). The Iowa (BB-61) was the first of the six ships in that class to be laid down (6/27/40) and launched (8/27/42). Three others were launched and commissioned during WWII (New Jersey, Missouri and Wisconsin). The Kentucky was launched in 1950 but never commissioned. The Illinois was canceled before completion in August 1945 as the war in the Pacific was ending and was broken up in 1958.
The final USS Iowa had the honor of carrying President Roosevelt to Algeria as part of his trip to the Tehran Conference in 1943. She was then transferred to the Pacific fleet in 1944. She shelled two island beachheads in advance of Allied amphibious landings in the Marshall Islands and shielded aircraft carriers in the vicinity of those islands. She also saw action in the Caroline Islands where (along with the New Jersey) she sunk a Japanese light cruiser, in the Mariana Islands and islands off New Guinea. Most of the action was bombardment of islands and aircraft carrier protection. As part of the Battle of the Philippine Sea, she helped repel 4 air raids that led to almost complete destruction of the Japanese carrier-based air forces, and then she shot down two other enemy aircraft. She then continued to support the island hopping that led to the successful return of Allied troops to the Philippines at Leyte and helped during the battles to reclaim the Philippines and repel Japanese counterattacks.
Ironically, the worst damage to the Iowa during WWII was from Typhoon Cobra. After repairs and retrofitting, she took part in the campaign to take Okinawa. She then was shifted to bombardment of the Japanese home islands.
Although the signing of the peace treaties took place on sister ship, Missouri, the Iowa had the honor of being the flagship of Admiral Halsey's Third Fleet when she accompanied the Missouri into Tokyo Bay. Then she helped bring home returning U.S. active duty soldiers and released U.S. POW's.
She returned to active duty during the Korean War as flagship of the 7th fleet. She primarily took part in bombing raids along the North Korean coast.
She was part of the active fleet until 1957 and again from 1982 to 1990. Near the end of the Iran-Iraq War, she escorted oil tankers from Kuwaiti ports through the Persian Gulf. After being relieved of that duty, during an experiment, the Iowa set the record for the longest ranged 16" shell ever fired (26.9 miles). 3 months later, an explosion in a gun turret led to the death of 47 crewmen. That led to the Iowa being decommissioned earlier than expected in 1990 as part of military downsizing following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
She is currently permanently docked as a museum ship at the Pacific Battleship Center at the Port of Los Angeles.
Plenty of the soldiers on the ships were from Iowa! And we are very grateful to our Iowans too!

Daly has one entry onto c-spans website and talks about news reporting at the national press club I believe it was 1986, so he probably knew a little about the future than some might think!
Bennett asks the Commandant of the U.S. Naval Academy if they will beat Army in football that year (in the game to be played at its traditional neutral site in Philadelphia on the first Saturday of November, almost exactly three months after the date this episode aired. Of course the Commandant confidently predicts victory. But he was wrong. Although Navy had a better record in 1956 than Army, they did not win the game. Neither did Army. They battled to a 7-7 tie.
Navy finished 6-1-2 that year, losing only to Tulane in New Orleans and also forging a 7-7 tie with Duke in Durham, NC. At the end of the season, the Middies were ranked 16th in the writers poll and 19th in the coaches poll. At a time when there were only five bowl games for the major college football teams (Orange, Sugar, Cotton and Rose on New Year's Day and the Gator Bowl, one or more days earlier) and with some of those sites not allowing integrated teams to play, Navy did not get invited to a bowl game that year.
In 2021, there were 44 bowl games. Since 2001, there has been 18 teams with losing records invited to bowl games & 17 played (the 2021 Hawaii Bowl was canceled). Ten won their game.
This was 9 years before I was born.

Vice Admiral Smedberg was the Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy, not the Commandant. The Commandant of Midshipmen typically is a Navy Captain or Marine Corps Colonel. VADM Smedberg's father was an Army Brigadier General, and his son was a Rear Admiral who also at one time commanded the USS Iowa battleship.

Kind of ironic that at the end of the last episode, Bennett Cerf advised John Daly to try to get some sleep, to which John replied that he planned "to sleep every night for the next year." Then at the beginning of the very next episode (this one) we find out that John was out at Bennett's pool at 2 AM the night before!

Marisa Pavan made one more appearance on this show. It was on the July 24, 1966 edition. This time, she and husband Jean-Pierre Aumont were mystery guests. This episode is interesting, because it was the very last taping, before they switched to color videotape.

This had to be one of the very first editions of "WML?" that had the panelists come out on stage as would be custom from this point to the end of the original series in 1967 and again in the syndicated version that ran from 1968-'75. The one notable exception to this was the first show after Dorothy Kilgallen passed away in November 1965.

I saw a WML online with Greer Garson on the panel. Walter was to be on the panel too, but had laryngitis. Wouldn't that been wonderful to see Garson and Pidgeon together again!

They had been coming out from behind the curtains rather than be already seated on and off for some time over the preceding months. A couple of years back, they did it one time in response to letters from female viewers who wanted to see a full-length view of the beautiful clothes worn by the female panelists. They went back to the old way but by the time of the last episodes that Fred Allen was on (about a half dozen or so), they started coming out again in response to the same requests. After Fred's death for a couple of episodes, they went back to starting the show with the panel seated. They also were seated the first few times that Paul Winchell was a guest panelist. Perhaps they weren't sure if they wanted to have him coming out while carrying Jerry Mahoney. Eventually he did walk out a couple of times. And when they were in Chicago with a different set, they were seated at the start of the show.
I prefer it when they walk to their seats for the same reason the female viewers wrote in to WML all those many years ago. It was a shame for Arlene, Dorothy and most of the other female guest panelists to hide most of their beautiful outfits behind a desk. But I would imagine that in the future, if they felt it would embarrass one of the panel members to have them walk to their seats, or perhaps the first show after Dorothy Kilgallen's death, they would have skipped the panel members walking to their places.
+Lois Simmons There were a few instances later on in the show's run when the panel was presented seated because one of the panelists happened to have either an injury or a disability which would have made the on-screen walk-on awkward for him or her. I can't remember which episodes or which panelists were affected offhand right now, but I know this topic has come up in discussions before, and others have pointed out these instances with more specifics.

Mrs. Cody was evidently married to Wild Bill Cody (whose legal name was Penniman, and who I sincerely doubt was actually related to Buffalo Bill), and died due to a gun accident in 1959. I can't find much on her life before that, but I got dragged into looking at Buffalo Bill's family tree, so possibly I'll find more later.

What an amazing comment thread, first a video of an old TV program that has been mostly buried in history, but here on UA-cam in the current year for our viewing curiosity. Then a viewer who is interested enough to research and find more quality relevant information on the guests of the old show. THEN an actual family member replying with some more details and a thank you. What wholesome wonders of the modern age! :D

Marisa Pavan is misspelled with two S's in her first name when the actual show pops her name up on the screen, which is quite funny because it appears at the same time that she signs the board and spells her name on there correctly and clearly with only one S. Lol! xD
Ms. Pavan spelt her first name Marissa but here and on imdb it is spelt with two S's.
I'm not sure I follow you. IMDB and Wikipedia both spell her name Marisa, which is undoubtedly correct - the double S version appears only as an on-screen caption in this episode of WML. What she signs in as is unclear, but I think it's a single S. She's happily still with us at the age of 84.

I am surprised Frank Fay was never on the show. His far right views were in tune with McCarthy who was prominent at that time. Plus would have been really interesting to hear some of the abrasive answers he sure would have given due to probably nobody on the panel would have liked him. Frank Fay is the one actor that I would really liked to have seen on the show because he certainly would have been a unique mystery guest very different than anyone else they ever had on the show.
They never had Fay's ex wife Barbara Stanwyck on WML either. By 1956, who knows whether Frank Fay was in good enough shape to go on a TV show or not. He had a terrible drinking problem and was violent and unpredictable, even back in 1930. Young comedians Milton Berle and Bob Hope claimed that they watched him from the wings in the early 1920's, trying to learn all they could. That generation considered Frank Fay to be a comic genius. However, he did not come across on screen and his wife, rather than he, got the big Hollywood career. If Fay could've been the mystery guest, and Milton Berle a panelist, that would be even better. We'll never know how many people the producers tried and failed to get, and guest panelists to go with those people. In Heaven, they're still playing WML with all the people they couldn't get on earth.
lemorab1 -if Fay was a panelist and Berle the mystery guest there would have been fireworks. Fay I am sure would have insulted Berle with anti Semitic comments and Berle would have attacked back with clever insults answers. What a show that would have been! And John Daly sitting there helpless and speechless to stop them.
@@ealswytheangelicrealms Berle said, in later years, that Frank Fay was a terrible human being, but also that he learned everything about performing from him. So did a lot of other performers. I'm guessing that most of what would have passed between Berle and Fay on WML would've been unusable and stopped by the censors. But, it's fun to imagine what it could've been like.

I thought Walter might stumble but was a very good panelist. The pool story sounded like there might have been some hard feelings between John and Bennett.
How do you know he was a good panelist? There was no suggestion of him being a good panelist from the way he conducted as a panelist. On the contrary, he gave the opposite impression, but it may be because of lack of experience on WML as a panelist!

It just seems incomprehensible, that a national television show like this could spell the name of their mystery guest incorrectly. Was there no quality control on What's My Line whatsoever? If memory serves me correctly, this is an error that happened several other times as well.

Pier Angeli was in love with James Dean. She spent 17 years in deep depression before she decided to join him. She was married for 2 years to Vic Damone who was extremely controlling. Sad story.
