The day before this program aired, at the British Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, Roger Bannister and John Landy of Australia were pitted against each other for the first time. At the time, they were the only two who had run the mile in under 4 minutes and Landy was the current world record holder. While Bannister was no longer a student at Oxford when he ran the historic race, he had been one in 1949 when he was elected President of the Oxford University Athletic Club and led the effort to replace the bumpy, uneven track with a state of he art (for its day) facility. It's highly doubtful that Bannister would have considered competing on that track in his quest for the record if it had not been upgraded. Because of my past association with Cornell University track and field, I was fortunate to actually walk on the very same track on which Bannister set the record at Oxford. I was there in 1974, two years before they upgraded the track to a synthetic surface. When I was there, it was still a dirt/cinder track: state of the art in 1954. Re : AIWboojum 7 months ago To be fair, they all did that to some extent. More to the point, one of the reasons I've been watching these videos is because everyone is so wonderfully classy--imagine a Price Is Right contestant wearing an evening gown--and it's really not classy to criticize and insult a woman who has been dead for fifty years for something that in the end isn't really a big deal. Dorothy Kilgallen was witty and sharp on this program, I think she brought something very valuable to the panel and the show suffered when she passed.
I get aggravated also when everyone picks on Dorothy for maybe being drunk or her medicine is affecting her. You can tell the others may have also and don't get the flack she does.
I'm glad they eventually eliminated the practice of having the contestants walk down in front of the panel and have them try one free guess each. That seemed such a waste of valuable time given that it was only a half-hour show. I realize there were a few occasions when the occupation was correctly guessed, but overall it seemed pointless.
@@marybethmcmahon5937 Yes, probably why they eventually eliminated it. And on those VERY rare occasions when a "free guess" was correct, it was a ler-down. Like, "Oh great, thanks for ruining the game."

I think the woman who was last on this video must have appeared earlier in the show and either the video was edited out of sequence or they taped her and used her as filler when they had extra time for the broadcast (after the celebrity guest). There's no way anyone would guess "pretzel bender" for the female wrestler and then the last guest turned out to be exactly that.
Except when it came to Dorothy. He made it clear after she was dead that he (and the host, Daly) had a great deal of contempt for her and went out of his way to say what great friends he and the other panelists and Daly were.
Anybody else ever find themselves wondering if the panel didn't sometimes get clues prior to a guest coming out.......seriously, that Dorothy Kilgallen was one spooky chick, the way she would suddenly zero in on the guest's occupation with just a few simple questions. I know she was incredibly smart, and had that innate reporter's 'nose' (which in the end, may have actually gotten her killed) for getting to the bottom of things......but she was simply AMAZING on this show !!!
While we never got the chance to meet so many interesting people as the panel did, at least we saw the often funny reactions of the mystery guests. None of these panelists probably ever did, so they missed quite an important part of the show.
I met her and her then husband in line at a movie theater in Palm Springs. It was 1974. My date and I talked to t hem fir about a half hour. She was absolutely delightful!
@@accomplice55 I think Yoran may be referring to Zsa Zsa. On the other hand, how many people have happy ends? "Hey, Hey! I'm dying. Isn't this fun?" There's someone who regularly posts "The sad ending of ...." on UA-cam. I'm waiting for that person to post his/her first "The happy death of..." Beyond that, some of the people whose "end" is profiled by this person are still very much alive. In any case, I find the "sad end" phrase odd. Eva died from complications following a fall, and lots of people do. She and Eddie Albert worked well together and made us laugh on _Green Acres_ Before this show she had starred in the original _The Happy Time_ (not the musical version with Robert Goulet), which actually ran more than twice as long as the musical. Later on she replaced stars in a couple of musicals, so she did end up singing.
Everyone talking about Eva and Wrestlers , but no one even mentions that cute Remington - it's exactly like the one my Daddy gave me , back when my facial hair emerged - and he added a few lines about birds and bees as well - so sweet
When I worked at Hoag hosp in the 80’s,,, I went out the back entrance after my shift,,, which I rarely ever had done...... Back then,,, it wasn’t used much, very quiet lobby and seating area. As I walked out I glanced left at the area to see an absolutely beautiful blond woman in a long plaid skirt. I walked out door and it occurred to me the nurses knew there was a Gabor on 10 th floor. So it hit me. I’m not totally sure which sister I saw that day,,,but might have been Eva. I walked back in and had to see her again. Then I left for the day. It was a thrill and she was stunning even from a little distance.
Though they may not be as entertaining as Groucho Marx was a guest panelist there's no doubt in my mind the two best guest players were Steve Allen and Tony Randall.
@Sandy Dog - Steve Allen was a permanent replacement for Hal Block and Steve's permanent replacement was Fred Allen. After Fred's passing, they used exclusively guest panelists in that 4th spot. They had been considering Ernie Kovacs who got a show in L.A., so didn't take the permanent spot. After Dorothy's death they used only guests for her seat, too. Would you consider putting Martin Gabel up with Tony Randall as a witty and intelligent frequent guest panelist?
I love elegance and refinement of people back then. There was something about the way you presented yourself that is severely lacking today. Eva was beautiful. You should see " The Last Time I Saw Paris " staring Elizabeth Taylor and Eva Gabor.
I had to look up Eva Gabor's height because she looked so petite when she shook hands with Bennett Cerf and Steve Allen, both of whom were tall. She was 5 ft. 2-1/2 in. tall (158.75 cm), 12-1/2 inches (31.75 cm) shorter than Steve Allen and 10-1/2 inches (26.67 cm) shorter than Bennett Cerf. So a rather petite woman, I'd say. Based on the way she answered the questions, I think she was pretty smart, too, and obviously had a good command of English. I think she knew how to use her Hungarian accent to convey a certain personality on which she capitalized. By all accounts, Eva Gabor was a very nice woman who was very well-liked by the people she worked with as an actress. I think she had a good sense of humor -- I think that was required when she played "Lisa Douglas" on "Green Acres" for six seasons.
She was adorably delightful on Green Acres as well as being gorgeous - especially for someone in her mid-40's to early 50's during the run of the show. She displayed outstanding comedic timing on that show, a surrealistic spin off of Petticoat Junction (or perhaps the PJ writers on heavy drugs). But all terribly frustrating to her usually logical husband, Oliver. I say usually logical because what attorney would buy the Haney place unseen except one whose eyes were clouded by an overly romanticized and idealized view of the American farmer. Lisa would say the most outrageous and nonsensical things and then one of the local people would repeat them as if everybody knew about that (except for Kate who was always very sensible). And Eva and Eddie Albert had remarkable chemistry together. My two favorite parts of Green Acres were Oliver trying to explain the electrical system to Eva (which required nothing more difficult then adding and making sure the total didn't exceed 7) so they didn't blow a "foose", and the time the selvage (for want of a better term) from Lisa's pancakes (stamped out with a "pot's cover") replaced the broken head gasket on Oliver's truck. And regarding her accent, Lisa would sometimes remark that she had trouble with her "woulbe-U's" and her "wees". +ToddSF 94109 Being a Californian who has lived in both the southern and northern part of the state, did you ever notice that in central California there is both a Pixley and a Porterville in fairly close proximity to each other. (The Cannonball would have had a run of about 12 miles.) Of course Porterville's name had to be altered slightly to fit in with the presence of the Bradley sisters: Billie Jo, Bobbie Jo and Betty Jo, not to mention Bea Benaderet's ample charms.
@@loissimmons6558 I am of Hungarian ancestry, although born in Canada. There is no "w" in Hungarian, so "double U" is invariably pronounced "v", just in case you "vant" to know, dahling. Incidentally, the first contestant also has a Hungarian name, "Zold" means "Green" in Hungarian.
@@robertfiller8634 Always a pleasure to meet a fellow Magyar! I knew that there is no "w" in Hungarian. I was quoting Eva from the show explaining one of her difficulties with English. (If I remember my German class from over 50 years ago, Germans call "w" "double-vay" when reciting the alphabet; double-v is a more accurate description of the shape of the letter than double-u.) I did not know that "zold" means "green" in Hungarian. Thank you for sharing that. I don't recall my mom teaching us the names of colors in Hungarian. Ironically, we had a neighbor of Italian descent whose last name was Verde. My dad (German descent) with his dry sense of humor would call him "Joe Green". Mrs. Taylor Lewis was a world-traveling professional wrestler for many years as “Daisy Mae the Hillbilly Girl” and “Patsy O’Neal the Hollywood Starlet” she also appeared in August of 1953 on “What’s My Line” with Eva Gabor.
Would you all agree that in this era, the differences in appearance between the civilian women and their movie star counterparts were much more distinct than they are today?
David Wilkenfeld well, things were different back then, a street walker dressed different ly from an average young girl...now sometimes u see some teenagers in the street walking around in skimpy shorts...
It depends on the occasion. Many celebrity appearances today occur on shows or at events that have casual attire, whereas in the 50s almost any television appearance was something that usually called for more formal attire. Celebrities still dress formally for certain types of programming or events, and it depends on the celebrity. It was only recently that daytime talk shows started becoming more casual dress, even in the 90s a celebrity apearance on a talk show with Regis or Oprah would usually be in formal attire or famous designer casual.
It is strange that she rushed off without talking. Someone who appeared on stage, screen, TV, radio, and walkie-talkie must have had something to talk about.

@@ejej6934 This show was televised live. Pretzel benders was sort of an ongoing gag.
Smart, beautiful, humble and sweet-- Cerf's got it all.
Hahaha nice one! Cerf is indeed lovely.
He was always such a gentleman
Except when it came to Dorothy. He made it clear after she was dead that he (and the host, Daly) had a great deal of contempt for her and went out of his way to say what great friends he and the other panelists and Daly were.
I love the charisma of people back then
Anybody else ever find themselves wondering if the panel didn't sometimes get clues prior to a guest coming out.......seriously, that Dorothy Kilgallen was one spooky chick, the way she would suddenly zero in on the guest's occupation with just a few simple questions.
I know she was incredibly smart, and had that innate reporter's 'nose' (which in the end, may have actually gotten her killed) for getting to the bottom of things......but she was simply AMAZING on this show !!!
she died from an incautious intake of alcohol & prescription drugs -
mcadams.posc.mu.edu/death4.htm
Well-l-l-l-l-l, that's ONE theory.........
I'm sure they were tipped off. Don't forget, this is from the same era as the rigged quiz shows.
Tommy Truth I kinda of doubt it because they get it wrong sometimes.
Anne Roy You want to study her surroundings at her death better.
While we never got the chance to meet so many interesting people as the panel did, at least we saw the often funny reactions of the mystery guests. None of these panelists probably ever did, so they missed quite an important part of the show.
A good observation.
Great show!
I started learning Hungarian because I loved Eva so much. 😃
@Mark Richardson How's it going, eh?
Truth Bomb I started collecting Hungarian stamps because of the Gabor sisters!
Get a Vizsla. 🐕
I started Learning Hungarian because my wife was Hungarian. 👍
I met her and her then husband in line at a movie theater in Palm Springs. It was 1974. My date and I talked to t hem fir about a half hour. She was absolutely delightful!
Mrs. Gabor was such and adorable lady. What a sad end she had.
What was her sad end?
Eva was gorgeous to the last day!
I hope she is remembered for more than just that ?
Pretty pretty Eva; a softer, more innocent version of her sister
Everyone talking about Eva and Wrestlers , but no one even mentions that cute Remington - it's exactly like the one my Daddy gave me , back when my facial hair emerged - and he added a few lines about birds and bees as well - so sweet
So they passed up chatting with Eva to talk pretzels? That’s not very nice, daaahrling.
The Gabor sisters were all lovely, mom too.
Thats true I tottaly agree !!!
All three looked like their Mom, great genes!!

@@philippapay4352 Yes, on Gabel!
I think all the Gabors are charming
This many decades after Green Acres I still crush on her ! But not her cooking !❤❤
Wonderful series! People were so polite in those days!
There is my bianca ;-)! Eva Gabor is soo beautiful O.o
Eva made Miss Bianca absolutely real! I have the video.
John rubs his hands together at 09:05 like ooooo boyyy, we've got em now! 😄 So adorable, what a charmer he was. 😇
I love elegance and refinement of people back then. There was something about the way you presented yourself that is severely lacking today.
Eva was beautiful. You should see " The Last Time I Saw Paris " staring Elizabeth Taylor and Eva Gabor.
Eva.... such a cutie!!

Being a Californian who has lived in both the southern and northern part of the state, did you ever notice that in central California there is both a Pixley and a Porterville in fairly close proximity to each other. (The Cannonball would have had a run of about 12 miles.) Of course Porterville's name had to be altered slightly to fit in with the presence of the Bradley sisters: Billie Jo, Bobbie Jo and Betty Jo, not to mention Bea Benaderet's ample charms.
Lois Simmons I think Eva is very underrated. Her timing in comedy is amazing. She's a hoot in interviews. Highly successful business person as well
ToddSF 94109 I can still hear her voice saying "This has been a Filmways presentation dahling." at the end of every Green Acres episode.
(If I remember my German class from over 50 years ago, Germans call "w" "double-vay" when reciting the alphabet; double-v is a more accurate description of the shape of the letter than double-u.)
I did not know that "zold" means "green" in Hungarian. Thank you for sharing that. I don't recall my mom teaching us the names of colors in Hungarian. Ironically, we had a neighbor of Italian descent whose last name was Verde. My dad (German descent) with his dry sense of humor would call him "Joe Green". (It predated the football player for the Steelers.) Alas, my mom didn't have the same dry sense of humor. If she did, I would have learned "zold".
This episode seems a bit sneaky, lol. ❤ Love it.
it's kind of sad how the handwriting nowadays has changed. if i wrote eva gabors name on that board they probably wouldn't understand it and think it's not artistic
tinwoods it is in Texas. I taught for 30 years (retired 3 years ago) and it was taught by 2nd-4th Grade’s
They brought it back fortunately. I think most milennials know it it’s just dormant. I write heavily in it so some say my handwriting looks like thread. 🧵 🪡
@@DragonHeir92 youre meaning millennials know how to handwrite like that in 14:36? Doubt it, I'm in my 30s and handwrite better than people in my year and older but you're saying younger kids who never wrote nearly as much as we did growing up where it was compulsory to handwrite does, I can write neatly but will not look ancient like this. My dad had beautiful handwriting that people took pictures of it just coz it looks ancient.
Watching these episodes again, I feel that Arlene was actually the most clever of the bunch and the quickest witted for sure! Her mind was always quick with a joke but she could get away with it as a woman, but her talent was partly hidden by Steve Allen and the other 'funny' stars.
Her talent wasnt hidden. Cant you compliment her without trying to drag down others?
Absolutely love her, but this is an all-star panel!
I think the is my favorite episode.

Eva so beautiful, charming & natural beauty unlike Marilyn Monroe
Amazing that Arlene more or less guessed Betty Lehn's job before the first question was asked!
Pretzels are or were associated with Pennsylvania. It's like Steve Allen guessing that the Canadian was a hockey player.
Did Bennett not realize where the camera was during the intros? He was the only one looking away
TWO professional wrestlers on one show! That's both amazing and humourous.
That was a riot, Steve Allen was wise to the trick!?
Second pretzel bender on WML.
Mrs. Taylor Lewis was a world-traveling professional wrestler for many years as “Daisy Mae the Hillbilly Girl” and “Patsy O’Neal the Hollywood Starlet” she also appeared in August of 1953 on “What’s My Line” with Eva Gabor.
We will call this the night of correctly guessing the occupation quickly and the 35 dollar prize.
The Seven Year Itch came out the following year-1955, Eva Gabor’s dress is so similar to Marilyn Monroe’s.
Eddie Albert was one lucky guy!

In other words, today's movie stars look like a bunch of homeless, crackhead skanks just as women in this country who are not in the movies do.
Eva Gabor was so beautiful when she was young.
Arlene: "You're a dangerous girl--you can't tell your "yes's" from your "no's".
Too bad Eva Gabor rushed off so soon and then John has a nice talk with the pretzel bender. What a beautiful woman she is. My favorite Gabor.
It is strange that she rushed off without talking. Someone who appeared on stage, screen, TV, radio, and walkie-talkie must have had something to talk about.
