I’m so thankful for this I literally got lost 1/5/24 in JFK taking the air train and because of them I got home safely thank you so much. please leave them 4 ever
The NYC subway system is among the very oldest if not the oldest (I think Boston might be around the same or older) subway system in America and maybe even the world. These stations were built well over a century ago. Of course, they were not at all designed to handle the capacities of passengers today. Ridership will only increase. Having the platform controllers is a good idea, but it is only a tentative solution. It is not sustainable. You can't get around improvements and updates to infrastructure.
Hard if not impossible to do with island platforms. The 4/5/6 at Union Square is the first example that comes to mind. Fortunately it may be possible at other stations, though at great cost. Stations like Lexington/53 (E/M) could build wide, entrance-only platforms on the side and dedicate the center island platform for exit only. This is called the Spanish Solution. Platform screen doors would also help when it comes to safety. (Platform controllers could still help facilitate flow.)

Spends millions on platform controllers when installing platform screen doors would cost the same amount of money the first time they are installed and then cost 10% in maintenance. The cost overruns and choices the MTA makes are truly astounding
And almost all of that is everyone refusing to invest in the system. People want the MTA to do everything and anything, but refuse to fund it adequately to meet those requests.
@@metropod Could the MTA use more funding? Sure. Does the MTA have the misfortune of largely existing in a city where a lot of the residents do not give a shit about cleanliness and it’s some of its staff are notoriously lazy? Yes.

Getting NYC onto them choo choo trains safely. 😂😂😂
This is a very beneficial role especially for crowded lines like QBL and Lexington. 8th Avenue might need them at 34th soon though.
In short: they do everything lol
Idk how they do it but they definitely do it really well imo

That means they need to close stations down to make platforms wider
MTA is a glaring example of how bad for society the monopoly power can be. We, New Yorkers, need an Alternative.

MTA SERVICE BUSES MTA OK BY the way

In all of my years taking NYC public transit and commuter rail, I've never one seen any of these people. This role seems somewhat redundant.
Installing automatic track barriers like that have been available over 10+ years in asian counties would fix this - Get it together NYC 😮

completely unnecessary and waste of money! People evading fare is a bigger safety issue!
The MTA is a joke, take a look or visit most other nations largest metros… makes us look like shit.
look at the MTA compare ot other US cities (minus WMATA), they are a joke.
