Matvei Michkov's Mental Game Progression - How Good of a Playmaker Is He?

  • In this episode of The Two-Line Pass, I'll breakdown Philadelphia Flyers (#letsgoflyers ) 1st round pick from the 2023 NHL Entry Draft (#nhl ) Matvei Michkov. I'll mostly be focused on the progression of his mental game - playmaking process, spatial awareness, and positional integrity...but I'll also take a look at an interesting physical trait that he offers that adds an interesting element to his game.
This isn't intended to be a highlight video, as I'm sure plenty exist, but rather a shift by shift (with appreciable puck touches) breakdown of his tendencies and potential upside.

I'm fine with the nitpicks, he's not perfect and definitely has things to work on/room to grow. But having been a fan of the Flyers since '96 and having watched Claude Giroux come into his own & become our star for the better part of two decades - I disagree that they aren't similar players in terms of thinking ahead and making things happen. I miss the shit out of G and hope they bring him back before he retires for "one last run" when they're competitive again, but what I've seen of Michkov (of course in the small sample of preseason I've got to work with) he makes plays and sees options that I'm shouting at my TV with excitement over. He made a pass to Cam York on the powerplay from the corner to the slot that was PERFECTLY on the tape, through 2 defenders' sticks/checking coverage, and it resulted in a goal off the rebound IIRC. The same way I would when Giroux found a wide-open Simmonds or Voracek or found the one tiny little opening in the goalie's coverage to score a goal through. Maybe they don't DO IT the same way, but I don't agree that Michkov is/will be less skilled than Giroux was.
I enjoyed the video, thank you for your perspective on this!

Just for the record, I don't think Giroux was more skilled at the same age as Michkov. I don't think that's even very close either, with all due respect to Giroux. Michkov has technicals that make him extremely exciting. Flyers fans should be very excited about him. My only hesitation is that I don't see him as some otherworldly passer/playmaker. I used Giroux as an easy prop because a) Flyers b) smaller and not fast c) excellent hockey sense and playmaking that he used to compensate for "b".
Michkov's sensing of goalie movement, combined with his shot, and lethal accuracy at low angles will be how he "compensates" for "b", so to speak. At least, that's my prediction of it. Thanks for the very reasonable, conversational comment.

Michkov certainly has things he needs to work on as all players do...but I've already seen numerous situations in the preseason where it seemed like the entire team was handling the puck like it was a frikin grenade and Michkov for the most part demonstrated a certain calmness, poise, and confidence when handling the puck and making plays that make you take notice...he needs to keep improving and adapting...but his playmaking, vision, and decision making have overall passed the eye test so far, and I think it's only going to improve as he gets used to the speed and pacing of the league...and he strikes me as a player that just has that "it" factor, where even if he seems ordinary for most of a game, he somehow will wind up with 2 or 3 points and be a reason they win...I could see that being who he is for his whole career...ordinary and quiet for large portions of games, but being absolutely clutch and capitalizing at key junctures to help this team win alot of games

Was the point projection at the end for this season or as he matures and becomes all you expect him to be? Also , I know your video breakdowns focus on prospects, but could you make some on those elite guys in the league. For example, you mentioned where you rank Giroux as 8 or 8.5/9 on Hockey sense could you show us how he thinks differently and how he zigs when most zags, and was that something that you could project in his game from junior or is it something he developed along the way. Seeing how the elite have always been a step ahead or have even surpassed the reasonable projections on their game is interesting to me. Some examples of guys I'll love to see are Jack hughes who struggled offensively a lot as a rookie, and Mackinnon who seemed to taper off only to become a top 3 guy in the past 5 years. Thanks a lot for the videos really look forward to watching them.

Point projection was basically a more mature him. I think he'll be able to get to his prime reasonably quickly though. I can attempt to do something with elite players, but an all-NHL comes with some baggage because of copyright nonsense. I mean, who would want their best and brightest shown off like that...? haha
Let me see how creative I can get with that because it's a smart idea. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Thanks. I don't even want to characterize it quite so strong. Because there are aspects in his mental that are really good. His proprioceptive system, for instance, which he weaponizes in his "automatic" puck protection mechanics. I was just surprised to read folks talking about him like he's some incredible passer, so I checked the tape.

  • @ronaldroell9244

Cool vid. As one of the biggest G fans on the planet, there's no way people are seriously comparing the two in the playmaking department. Michkov, from what I understand, is supposed to be a guy who comes over and scores 40 goals, as you said in the video. If he adds greater than or equal to assist numbers then sign me the f-bomb up. And to add to that, I didn't expect him to make some of the passes he's made already. He certainly could have 3-4 more assists over these preseason games if he were passing to himself.
All that being said, Torts has said he doesn't want to stifle his offensive production by making him a 200-ft player so I hope some of what you pointed out today gets better by putting in the work and keeping those batteries charged.

I'm not sure I understand the comment. But just to say the words, this isn't about the technical skill of Michkov, per se. It's more about the mental game - very specific components of it, in fact. If we're going highlights against highlights, Michkov wins no contest, especially adjusting for age.

Giroux is a couple tiers above him??? Are you serious??? I a have been a Flyers fan for 40+ years and he UNDOUBTEDLY is the best 19 yr old talent since Lindros!!! Have you watched these preseason games??? I respect your analysis but you are so wrong on #39 and you will see for yourself!!!

Well, clearly, I'm watching the preseason games - that's why there's so many clips in the video haha. But the video isn't about his "talent", per se. It's about very specific parts of his mental game. And from that perspective, I find him to be below Giroux. In terms of hands, shooting ability, dynamic skill in space, yes, he blows Giroux out of the water.

@@two-linepass Well I may not understand the hockey terminology and breakdown analysis as well as you, but I just know this for a FACT and that he has a certain GRAVITY about him like the true superstars that just be his presence makes not only his line better but the entire team & we can clearly see that in just a few preseason games... If hockey IQ is similar to what you call his mental game, then I am missing your point bc his passes and vision has been AMAZING ... I just know I haven't seen the likes of his superstar-esque talent since #88 in this town, and that includes Giroux... And to top it all off, he is just 19!!!

Bro you a D1 hater, you have the remember the kid is 19 and has only played 4 NHL pre-season games so far. You continue to compare him to top NHL talent saying "He doesn't do what the great players in this league do". Well of course he doesn't, its his 4th game. It takes time to build confidence in this league and get used to the speed. But for a kid who just moved across the world at 19 and playing in the best league in the world to have 3 goals and 4 assists in 4 games and continue the generate offence from nothing, you are being really hard on the little stuff that will be fixed by the coaching staff and experience.
