10:36 Thom, homie, dude... You don't need to add the qualifiers. Your photos are art, that one very much included (it's gorgeous!), and no one is going to fuss about it. Or no one should. Call your work what it is: Art. You are an artist. Just not a pretentious one, which is why we love you. Or one of the reasons. It's on the list. It's a good list.
The photo of the lily pads is exceptional - a shot most people would miss unless they're willing to slow down and spend time looking at their environment.
Enjoy the videos. Wondering why you stop adding the f-stop and iso to you photos that you captured? As a hobby photographer, I found that little bit of information useful.
as someone has been shoting for sometimes, camera setting info is the most toxic info you can give to someone in modern-day camera
Different camera have different limitations, different camera size format has different depth of field, Sometimes in the field You may try to cut time and you may not be using the most ideal setting too, Sometimes to also include focus stacking and exposure bracketing ,giving all this settings Without the full set of mentality details is basically pointing people to more confusing direction
Technical specs are not important.
You'll learn this after a few thousand shots.
@@JohnLamjohnlsl thanks, lots to learn.
I usually include them, but I was late with this edit and ran out of time. Next time 👍
I always appreciate how you do 'photo gear' videos. You make them about how the gear fits into your creative process and the images you can make with it instead of just making it about the gear itself. Well done.
Congrats on the new camera!
Exactly. Very well said!
Hi Thomas,
I’ve been following your channel for quite a long time. For some reason, I stopped watching for almost three years, don’t know why? I love your channel and how you take us with you and explain along the way, your thoughts behind the shots and what you did to achieve them.
Having just recently returned and catching up, I have to say your storytelling and video editing skills have massively improved, from an already high standard. I don’t know how you maintain, nor dare I say elevate your enthusiasm for your craft? From the outside looking in, you seem happy and love your life. You seem to have found your footing into the photography world, meeting other creative people to share and learn with.
Just wanted to say, Well Done. I love your work, having bought many of your previous calendars, and will definitely send away for the 2024 one as well.
Great Work Thomas.
I'd say the lily pad image is for sure a work of art. It's really beautiful!!
The Nikon Z8 is a dream camera for landscape photography.
With a 45.7 effective megapixel stacked, full-frame CMOS sensor and
No mechanical shutter, there's no shutter-slap to affect the image plane.
Add one of the better or best Nikkor lenses and a highly trained photographer, like Thomas most certainly is, and you have a recipe for spectacular images!
Scotland is my most favourite places on earth, the close second is Tasmania. Stunning countries to take photos
Fair warning: I haven't even watched the video yet but RESPECT your work so much that I already KNOW the camera has passed w/ flying colors. I'm looking at the same in 1-2 years, finally making the mirrorless leap after a lifetime/52years of Nikon SLRs.
The lilly pad shot was epic bud! It looked like a painting!
I'm very pleased to see you using a Nikon Z8, you'll love it. Thanks for sharing your insight and emotions. I just ordered your 2024 calendar.
The lily pad shot really is exceptional. I also enjoyed the last sequence with just a bit of wind noise and that lone tree came out beautiful. Love your work and channel.
Thomas, that lily pad image is (subjectively) in your Top 10 images of all time, in my opinion! I know it's simple. I know it's "only" lily pads, but...WOW. Phenomenal nature image! It's all in the composition. Really well done!
The lily pads shot is a banger! Might be my favorite shot of yours. Thanks for sharing your thought process and descriptions of the compositions.
Thomas, that's so exciting about the new cameras and lens! I'm actually in the same boat. After shooting with my D810 for the past 7 years, I just went mirrorless-on order is a Z8 with almost the same lenses as you. I got the 14-30, 24-120, and 100-400. And yes, is cost me a fortune, but it will be all mine! Now, I'm looking for some extras like the L-bracket and perhaps some filters for the 82mm on the wide 14-30 lens. I've got a bunch of old filters for the mid- and tele-zoom. I can only hope I love the Z8 system as much as I've loved my D810! And stunning images in this video, to be sure!!!
Still one of my all-time favourite Photography channels. Always enjoy going on these adventures with you. Enjoy your personality and of course your photos. Thank you, Thomas.
The 10:55 lilly pad shot, I’d hang that one on the wall. Terrific!
Beautiful shots Thomas. I feel like that throughout the years you have found your style of photography more and more for every year. It has been a pleasure to be on that journey together with you through your videos.
I agree. I like when he explains the composition & such. Really like the 2 leaf photo. Came out better than I thought it would when he started talking about it. Don’t know why when I have a few that are some of my favorites.
I def recognized that landscape as I confess I was the one who left a cheery hello note on your windscreen as I spotted you heading off ( a few miles from Applecross)! It was a beautiful light and nothing beats the West coast highland’s for amazing beauty..loved your deer pic… 🙂atb vee
Love the Lily Pad shot.
I love the Lilly Pads shot. I have tried to do something similar at a local botanical garden, but I can never get the composition right.
Ha! I was in that exact spot five years ago and took essentially the identical image, with the addition of a bit of mist. It's a beautiful print hanging in my living room. What great memories! Would love to travel back to the UK again some day.
Great vlog Thomas, so glad our Scottish scenery was kind to you & great images.
Interesting choice. Not sure the size and weight is warranted for landscape photography. The Z7II does seem the better choice as a main camera and then the Z8 for wildlife, etc as an add on if required.
Wow the lily pads shot was a powerfull one! And I loved the last shot also!
Merci
Another great vid. I have to say, though, that as you were shooting that last lone pine, there was an amazing group of trees behind you. 14.26 in the video. Found myself talking to the monitor telling you to turn around. Hahaha.
Scotland is magical. Particularly loved the lily image 🤩
Thank you for another lovely video. Beautiful pictures as usual. Are you post processing in a slightly different way? These latest images seemed to be slightly brighter and have more contrast than your usual output. Thanks for continuing to produce entertaining and informative videos
3 beautiful images TH! Are you enjoying using your new NIKON setup? Love the location in Scotland, we were briefly there in 2018 on a 2 week drive holiday through the UK. We'd love to travel back there (from Australia..... a LONG...Long way). Love your work. Calendar is here and ready to hang in 2024... thank you!
Thomas, I think you and the new Z8 are going to be inseparable. I admire your choice of lenses, too. These images are among some of the most vibrant and beautiful that you have done. Can't wait to see more.
Tom and cameras ... neverending story ...
Always enjoy it when you discuss your approach to composition.
Hi Tom, the Newsletter is a great read, I've often wondered if a blog or newsletter archive would be prudent to have as a feature on your website?
Hello Thomas, thank you for this new video. Your images are very beautiful and inspiring. Thank you for sharing. Have a nice week.
Nigel that picture of the Lilly pads is exceptional, well done!
the Nikon zfc would be a great camera for you Thomas
The Lilly Pad Shot is a stunner. Honestly!
I'm so pleased I watched this, this is your best work I've seen, lily's were sublime, and many thanks. Just Superb.
The lily pads picture 😍 The best shot in the whole video in my opinion, killer shot.
Tom, I miss you posting the setting use for each shot, they do help me get into a sweet spot.
Another great video, Fall is a great time of year. In Colorado, USA it means snow is near.
There are at least two absolute keepers from this day's shoot, Thomas. Very well done!
Welcome to the Z8 Club. I'm sure you're are going to love this camera.
I have to say the lily pad shot is superb. Enjoying the channel.
I also love the photo of the lily pads, very nice indeed! Seeing the colour results of the filter, it is a reminder I should use them again. Thanks for this video & congrats on the new gear!
the lily pad shot is very nice, very nice!
Loved your final, lone tree image!
Love that Lilly pad shot. Just stunning.
Those opening shots! Lilly pads group of three magic.👍
i dont even have much of an interest in photography but I love your videos keep them coming!
As a landscape photographer, to aid in composition, do you ever think about using an external monitor mounted to the camera? Maybe a 5 or 7 inch screen?
Got a feeling that the true Thomas Heaton came out more in this video, probably because you were enjoying yourself so much. Sitting in my darkening home office, working on spreadsheets, I really feel I should just go and start having fun with my camera... then I remember the mortgage. Loved the water Lillies, how did you get the colours to pop and the water so dark?
Keep up the wonderful inspiring videos and looking forwards to seeing more from your trip.
Oh, this shot of the lily pad was it worth to watch this vid - to say at least.
I lived near Montrose for 3 years and absolutely loved Scotland. Those were the days of film only and I enjoyed going out on weekends to different places with my Pentax Spotmatic II and filming especially the old castles along the west coast.
Thomas, that bit with the polariser looked uncannily like a wee spot I know in the hills behind Lochcarron. Surely it can't be though... I mean it's in the middle of nowhere!
Right at the 4-minute mark you cross a bridge. You included video of it because you obviously recognized the scene as beautiful. I wondered if you actually stopped to take a picture? Beyond that, congrats on have your own gear--hopefully you're getting as much excitement out of it as others who acquire new gear!
Enjoyed the video as usual Thomas.
Congratulations on getting your own gear and you certainly chose well and yes i am jealous.
Although the conditions weren't in your favour you still managed to capture some really nice image's.
Look forward to the next one.
I will have to sign up for your newsletter as i think it will be interesting.
Great first session with the new camera. I agree with what you said about the lily shot, it was great.
Lovely images.
I think my take out from this video is to thik about how the light might change at different times of day to fall on the subject vs the background to help create that separation.
Yes, the lily pad shot is art.
I lost my shizzle for my second visit to Scotland in full autumn bloom. So it was great to see you filling your boots and as always making the complex immense 😁 I had the Z8 for a week and wow I didn’t want to give it back, enjoy Tom, the shot on the 100-400 exquisite!
I was in Skye in mid-October right after the storm and its hard to state how beautiful it was - I was overwhelmed!
Thanks Thomas! Subscribed to the weekly letter.
Really nice images Thomas.fabulous colours too. I’d be interested to know how you found the effect of that new Kase filter and whether you used it on the shot you showed on the video.
another amazing set of photos as always
Great Images Thomas the new camera has done you well. Looking forward to your next adventure
observation and obsession are the most important input into composition and youve shown just that. love all your videos and congrats on the Z8!
Filter case as a sporran. Very good laddie.
Lilypad shot: definitiv art! Love your choice of making the water black.
Second image is fantastic
I've only ever been to Scotland for a few days in early November but I can't imagine any other season than autumn fitting the Scottish landscape so perfectly. The melancholy is incredible.
I noticed you're wearing Wellington type rubber boots here, do you prefer them over tall hiking boots in the bogland? The ankle breaking aspect of boglands has me fearing a lack of support but maybe rubber boots are a better compromise than I think?
So glad you got the Z-8. I anticipated your purchase after your great white north trip! Maybe some more critter photos in the future? So basically there is a two week window of opportunity to fall photography in Scotland?! Love the lily pads photo. Thanks for taking us along Thomas.
Wow, what a location that is. Ample opportunities to add to the portfolio from appearances.
Love the lily pad shot!
The Lily pad photo is art to me!! 🙂
Please which Glen were you in?
Lilly shot fabulous
I remember about 10 years ago when I visited the Isle of Skye, it took us about 13 hours to get there by car, but that was including a few stops on the way. Non stop, it probably would've taken about 10 hours. That's from North Nottinghamshire though, so it's a bit further. Takes about 8 hours to get to the Cairngorms from where I live.
Those filters don't half make a difference don't they? WOW!
The water lily shot was beautiful, but that final shot was absolutely amazing! Everyone always seems to shoot the wet & moody Scotland. It was nice to see a sunny, glorious shot for once. Kudos!
That said, “tick infested” doesn’t fill me with the warm & fuzzies. I wonder, how many ticks do you wind up bringing back to the van/home with you after an outing? 😳
if you are not a superstar, then sqaurespace is like any, you belter know what you are doing in SEO and SEM
Thomas another great edition. I’ve been following you for years and I have to say that the color image you created of the lily pads is one of your finest. It is Art!
Stunning images, that golden light at the last location wow. Good to see you enjoying the new kit.
Nice. I was in Torridon a week or so earlier, climbingBeinn Eighe. I got my best ever shot of Coire Mhic Fearcher, at sunset. It set me wondering if you have ever been in there? I'd love to see how you shoot "Scotland's Grandest Corrie".
Hi Tom. Love this and loved the lily pads in particular. Reminds me of another shot of yours taken in certain frozen tarn in the Lake District in 2018, which is framed up on my wall.
Wow… so jealous when I see the locations you go to in your videos. I love how they are part travel and part photography. I think the biggest thing you have skirted but haven’t emphasized is patience. Waiting for that light, the shadows or looking at the location till you work out the picture. Once again, great video!
Beautiful images! Sorry your audio went out. I like your dialog explaining the location, your shot, and telling a story.
Thanks for the amazing video. Would love to hear more about Z8 in your future videos and how it betters, or not, your photography. These gears are expensive and for hobbyists like me, we really like to spend time knowing if a new gear like Z8 is going to elevate our photography or should we stick with our old gear and change our approach/techniques to produce better images.
Outstanding pictures, specially the water plant. Thnx.
I've also got the Z8 with those 3 lenses. The camera and image quality produced with all 3 of the lenses is fantastic. They're so versatile.
Loved the Lilly pads.
God that lily shot, exquisite !
I loved the lily pad photo!
Hi Thomas,
Any chance you could show the before and after Photoshop photos?
Cheers
Great videos btw 👍🙂🇬🇧
Thank you. 👍
What’s your feedback on the Black mist filter? As you never mentioned it, not that good perhaps?
Neat video! That was fun. I'm curious to see that black mist photo vs the no-filter version. I don't know what those things do but I like how it turned out.
For anyone wondering about the calendar - I have mine and I'm delighted. I'm excited to watch it next year.
Exceptional photos Tom and thank you for sharing with us!!
Thomas Heaton at his best. Great images and great camera set up 👏👏👌
Beautiful final shot, Thomas - better to get the shot than the commentary. The lilys were lovely too.
You will love the z8. I am in Canada currently using it for wildlife. Great focusing and optics.
beautiful photos with a simple perspective that's enough, I like that
Love your videos man, the frame behind you with the trees leading to the mountain peak at 14:26 would have been a nice frame also
